what would be the right way to replace a door & window combo?
Comments (3)I was just asking about wood because you said a previous owner cut out "nice wood" and it seems you are not satisfied with your prehung door. The Old House forum is not just for restoration. They may be able to suggest alternatives to what you have and suggest replacement companies which will offer what you are looking for. Doors more sensitive to your architecture are available in a variety of materials requiring less maintenance. People with old houses often have solutions for the problen you are encountering....See MoreWould you replace front this door?
Comments (6)One mistake that you made was getting the builders carpenter involved. Should have gone back to the original maker of the door, first. Our newly installed manufactured door is unstained for the next few weeks. It is already swelling with cold temperatures, rain and snow. Needs to be stained ASAP. However, I am worried that if we stain it now, it would stay swelled and not shrink back down. Ours came with the wrong color of threshold and hardware (hinges and handle.) Black instead of ORB. Not sure who's fault that is, but it is what it is. I guess it was a blessing. (See below) We also had two sets of French doors, as well as a single installed. While the handles are black, the hinges on the doubles are bronze (thankfully, these are outswing doors.) On the single (which is an inswing), the hardware is all black. The doors are in the same room. LOL We would love to see your new door...cracks and all!...See MoreWould you paint/replace or keep interior doors?
Comments (17)Yes, we painted all in a bright white, it's called chantilly lace - Benjamin Moore. Doors and trims are shiny, and the walls matte. (To be more exact it was our intention to paint all the same... The part where the contractor in fact painted some rooms with just the basic white (no chantily lace in it), it's a different story => only pick contractors with very good recommendations from people you know, not 5 star rated from Google!)...See Morereplacing rectangular exterior door with an arched one?
Comments (7)Can you stand further back and take a picture of the entire facade and post it please. Based on what I can see arched doors may not fit architecturally...See Morekimiko232
