How to replace old eave interior doors-keeping it simple
Comments (7)Well, I'm back to square one on these four atypical size bedroom eave doors (46.5" height x 32" width as interior measurement of hole). I hoped to replace them with non custom, not overly expensive double doors (rather than one sliding door) which swing out from the middle. I've checked Lowes and Home Depot. Lowes has some 80" x 32" hollow doors of various consistency. This would mean having to cut the door to 45" (what a waste) and then bisect that piece to make into two meeting in the middle. Bifold doors come in 32" width but I don't see how you can cut them to 45 some inches height given the fold. And the lumber company said they only make custom on this. I wish I could find some interior eave size doors. My problem can't be all that uncommon as a lot of homes have a slanted roof. Any other suggestions? I hate to start working again with that heavy plywood already there. The painter didn't sand the previous brown semi-gloss paint before painting the door white with BM White Dove semi-gloss and thus you see I started scraping the white all off to sand it because as it slid along the slider the white paint curled up and removed itself. I've crow barred the slider to enlarge its width by brunt force, which has helped some. Any other ideas here? I'm all ears. Thank you for any help....See MoreWould you keep the sliders or change to hinged patio doors?
Comments (11)the features-for a sliding door are various-screen upgrade-attention to the ball bearing or slide mechanism along the bottom sill.....French wood or narrow frame which is the difference between opening up for the view outside[or not]...material such as high quality vinyl/fiberglass or factory applied finish on fiberglass or wood or YOU stain or top coat....species of wood you might like....the glass itself-attention to light filtering/insulating characteristics....tempered is standard but hurricane or laminated and now "soundglass"if you lived near highway/airport/busy roads/coastal area/etc.. -then there's the hardware upgrade and multiple lock point positions and external lock? .....Go and get with a salesman of Andersen/jeldWen or whatever is in your area for a regional product and examine one time visit in the showroom at least--open/close/play with it-etc,...... French doors-dunno-some things might be similar like material and glass upgrades....this door is in the center of your space....a feature packed door can be really nice and give an upgrade to the space....budget may or maynot allow all the bells and whistles-but go and look-something about the door may tie in with your cabinet/wood in the kitchen[or not]-----default to white vinyl perchance...oh my-but high end white vinyl door-can work nicely. If it were me, the window has to come out,right?-can you plywood it up and do more in the kitchen so you get a feel of what you think, since there was never a door there.....it's hard....See MoreReplace interior doors or paint wall, which comes first?
Comments (7)Or paint walls and when you replace doors and no paint will get on new material. But probably doesn’t matter. When we were painting we were also refinishing floors. Painter said paint first (I’m guessing so he didn’t have to worry about messing up floor). Floor guy said floors first (so his sanding didn’t mess up base boards. Also guessing here.)...See More6-paneled interior doors: Paint or replace?
Comments (19)We also bought a house a couple years ago that have these doors.... but they are painted white. If yours were solid wood I would not paint but since they aren't, painting will update the look ... a little. I think you need to live in the home for awhile before committing to changes that cost a lot. My concern is that if you change to the shaker doors you like you would also have to change all the door trim and floor molding to a simpler look to match. The cost could snowball especially if you can't diy and have to pay someone to do everything. Even painting is a major cost if you aren't doing it yourself. Is it your forever home? It could be worth your time and money to change if you plan on staying here awhile. But if it is a long time home you also have time to make changes in stages you can prioritize. Our home IS our forever home. I'm not crazy about a lot of things but changing the doors are far down the list of things I want to change. First is kitchen appliances, changing flooring and hopefully someday changing our master closet/bath. I hate the layout but at this point don't know how to make it better. Because of that it is the only place in our house that hasn't been repainted. But my husband tackles a lot of our home projects. Time and money....See MoreC V
