what would be the right way to replace a door & window combo?

I own a 1908 brick rowhouse in washington dc, and want to replace the front and rear door. The doors have a window above them, and were fully trimmed out at one time, but the last people to replace a door just cut out the nice wood that was framing the entire brick opening and stuck a pre-hung door in. The transom (I believe transom) is the right word) window is still in the original framing. So anyone who is at the door and looks up sees the cut wood from when they put in pre-hung doors.

In addition, the windows are single pane, and one of them was broken at some time and replaced with a pane of plexiglass.

What is going to be the correct way to install a new door and window into this brick opening? I get the feeling that I should rip everything out, frame the opening with 2x10 lumber, put in a dividing piece of wood between the door and window, install a window, and install a non-pre hung door. Is that right? Would I want to use pressure treated wood for this?

Thanks for your assistance.
