My kitchen size is approx. 17 x 13. We will be using frameless cabinets.

What brand of frameless cabinets did you use? What is your kitchen size? What was your cost?

I used Scherr's custom RTA frameless cabinets. My kitchen is 8'x14'; I had about 25 linear feet of cabs. Our initial estimate was $7500 for industrial-board (particle-board) construction and melamine interiors, or $8500 for 3/4" plywood boxes and hardwood veneer interiors. This price included standard Blum drawer slides and hinges, but no pull-outs, etc. We wound up upgrading essentially everything it was possible to upgrade (premium wood, stain, soft-close hinges, undermount drawer slides, stacked upper cabinets, expensive Haefele and Rev-a-shelf pullouts and super susan, etc.). This ran about $15k + $800 shipping. A quote for Crystal cabs was about $3k higher.

As billl said, moisture should be addressed with proper ventilation (fan). If you do not have one already, plan to put one in. I don't have personal experience with IKEA cabinets, though I have a disassembled one in my basement waiting to be installed as a utility sink. I read very positive things about the quality:cost ratio. Personally, I generally prefer drawers rather than cabinets. Anything you can do to get extra drawers would be good. Unless the subfloor under the tub is damaged or you damage the tub while removing the flooring, there should be no reason you need to remove the tub. And even if you remove the tub, you could probably still reinstall it. I replaced my tub (it was harvest gold) and there had been a small amount of water damage. I pulled up the underlayment and the subfloor was in good shape. With water damage, you really don't know what to expect until you finish demolition.

These are some great ideas ... to be clear, I can paint the cabinets no problem (have experience and appropriate equipment), but I have resisted over the past couple of years because we had higher priority things to get done in the house. We're getting past those now, so have time to go back and tweek. I like idea of crown on the uppers. Removing the cab over the sink is problematic ...it has an LED under it that is really important to the sink function ... will have to look and see if I can pull it, route the wiring into the ceiling and then back down into another dangly fixture that could match whatever ends up being over the island? Funny thing ... taking photos and then studying them actually helps ME! The fan is ugly ... but it is a wonderful thing ...maybe paint it white to match ceiling? (we did this to two fans in this house and two in another ...makes them sort of disappear). We replaced two in another house with dark brown ones to hook up with the dark woodwork ... it looks good, too. We'll look at replacing the glass on the two dangly lights ...it does need some contrast from the white ... since they don't do much, anyway, perhaps industrial stainless, dark gray, red or black?

Great topic crl_ ! I spent a couple years figuring out what I wanted in my new kitchen. I had a pretty good kitchen before my reno, but there were definitely improvements to be made. My best changes: Drawers! Love lifting dinnerware up from drawer rather than down from upper cabinet. Love having my coffee cups in drawer immediately below coffee machine. Love not having to crawl around on the floor to access whatever is at the bottom and back of a cabinet. Induction! Probably the best surprise of my new kitchen, for all the same reasons listed above. Wall ovens! I don't know if I love my ovens because they are at the perfect height for me, or because I finally splurged on good equipment. Probably a combination of the two. I can tell you that my waist line is paying the price though! Big single sink. There's lots of discussion here about this. I grew up with double sinks, thought I'd probably get a low divide (best of both worlds, right?) but bit the bullet and got the single. It was, for me, the right decision.

Thanks. We do spend a lot of time in the family room. That was my first thought actually of opening that wall. The initial problem with that wall between the family room and the kitchen is that it is a load bearing wall. The living room we use as more of a formal sitting room if we have friends over. My wife also has her desk there. My wife has also thought about making the living room the dining room. Personally I think that is a waste of space but am open to being convinced otherwise. My wife and I would like to have more of an open floor plan. Thus thinking of combining the kitchen and dining room into one room. We eat 99% of our meals at the dining room table, so the table would have to fit into the larger kitchen design concept. I would like to incorporate kitchen and eating together. To me the difficult part is all the doors in the kitchen... the sliding doors to outside, the family room door, hall door and basement door.

We had a local cab shop make our oak cabs. Abt $9-12,000 plus transp, installation and lacquer finish done by subcontractors and $1500 Formica countertops and $250 for two Ikea 4-foot butcherblock sections. Our cabinet portion of the room is 12 x 16 which I think is a big kitchen. 3/4 inch plywood.

The shop has its limitations--total custom in layout but a finite set of cab door styles. Excellent hardware and finishes. More expensive woods would have cost more--they can supply anything.
