I always thought stairs were inside, steps were outside....

My opinion:
Stairs have railings, and are wood.
Steps don't have railings built into them, but the adjoining wall often has a rail on it, the rail is part of the wall.
Steps are often concrete or brick.

Use them both interchangeably (sp?). Could be wrong, but that's how it works 'round here.

"Stairs" is short for "staircase," which is a collection of steps. A "step" is the support for a person's foot as he or she ascends or descends the stairs (stairwell).

In my mind, stairs are made up of steps, railings, etc.

I always thought of stairs as a whole flight and steps as one or 2 (and also usually outside).

One or two...steps. A 'flight' of steps...stairs.

Ah, but what about "The Capitol Steps", the Spanish Steps, "The 39 Steps", the Steppes of Russia...oops, getting carried away.

sounds like step is one or a few & stairs are a whole flight or a number of flights.

If there's an outside entrance to, say, a garage apartment, I'd say you have to climb the stairs to get in the door.

There are five treads off the deck. They are open to the back and state code says you gotta have a hand hold.

If she knew what you were referring to, you used the right word. In such casual usage, the two words seem to be interchangeable.

Maybe it's a regional thing? Were you two brought up (raised? - which word?) in the same place?

Here, a step is a single stair or a step that you take when walking and stairs are everything else.

Ask her what she thinks & agree with her.

But ... now that someone mentions it ... the concrete business that one ascends to get to the front door ... are steps, as in, "... would you clean the front steps, please".

Gosh.... I'm glad we have solved THAT problem. I have steps all over.... one step (enclosed) into the front door: Two steps (enclosed) into the house from the garage.... even a step over the threshold coming in from the patio. (Can't "do" stairs anymore)

Never thought much about that subject. I've always assummed that 'steps' were the individual treads such as the board(s) that form the tread, or the lump of concrete that made one stepping surface. The 'riser' is the vertical piece under the tread. The entire assembly treads (steps), risers, handrails, and support pieces under the steps, is called 'stairs'. The number of items making a set of stairs is not fixed; some stairs have balistrades and others do not. Most strairs have hand rails but some do not especially in old farm houses. There are places in the world where stairs is a flight of steps and nothing else - no handrails, etc.

At my location, builders describe a 'stoop' as a one or two step assembly in front of an entryway, side door, back door, or side door of a garage. I get confused because where I grew up, a stoop included a small roof over the entryway. Without that roof, the stoop became "steps".

I am confused. My language has failed me.

I'm starting to think that what would be a flight of stairs if it was *indoors* may be steps if they are *outdoors*. Or, maybe it's the number of treads. How many steps makes a stairway? Or, is it the width of the structure? (Steps to access a public building... Capitol steps.)

I don't think the presence or absence of a handrail matters, at least not *indoors*. I've been in many old houses in the East that had both front stairs (sweeping, formal, wide treads with balustrades and handrails) and back stairs (winding narrow treads with a killer-steep incline -- originally for 'the help').

Basements are reached by stairs from inside the house, but by steps if they are outside, leading down to a below-ground basement entry.

Is there a distinction in other languages?
