ISO:electric tea kettle with auto cut off

That old woman that shows up here sometimes is

going to burn the house down if I don't get her a tea kettle that is smarter than she is.

I have a nice tea kettle, but it doesn't whistle very loud. She is getting more and more forgetful and she puts the water on to heat, then starts something else and forgets it.

She has let it boil dry a couple times. I need to get her one that won't do that.

I have googled, and every one I look at insists it is the best.

Anybody have a recommendation?

The Fire Department would appreciate it.

I have a couple of the hot pots that Aldi sells. They shut off after they are heated up and they get really hot. They don't carry them all the time. They sell them for around $12.99 I think anymore. I have seen similar ones in Meijer and I imagine Walmart also sells them.

I'd strongly recommend using non-toxic cleaners on ANYTHING you put food (or water your family will drink) in. You could have gotten the same results by making a paste of baking soda and water, spreading it over the spots and letting it sit for a bit before cleaning it with a non-abrasive nylon scrubber. A cut lemon rubbed on the spots is also very effective (I've actually cleaned my oven with lemon--it's amazing. Please, next time, start with something that won't poison your family if by any chance any residue remains on the pot.

The discussions about energy used and speed is interesting. Here are my findings heating 5-cups of water. We are water savers and use one gallon of saved water (that's water that normally runs down the drain waiting for the shower to get hot) for after meal clean-up and washing dishes that don't get put in the dishwasher. We use 5-cups of hot water heated in an electric kettle, plus approx. 5 more cups of cold, and the remainder of the gallon is used for rinsing. We use a small plastic tub for washing dishes. Normal use for doing dishes is somewhere between 5-7 gallons of water (charts and "experts" on the subject vary dramatically). I tested several methods for heating 5-cups of water calculating the amount of energy used and the cost using a Kill-A-Watt meter, as well as the amount of time it took to heat it to a boil. A stove top kettle is the least energy efficient because the heat source first heats the kettle, which in turn heats the water, and some of the heat source can be wasted heating air around the kettle if your kettle is smaller than the source. The heating element in an electric kettle comes in direct contact with the water. All tests were done with 5-cups of water. Sharp Microwave/Convection Oven: 13-minutes - .29 kWh Induction Cook Top: 8-minutes - .15 kWh And the winner is..... Electric Kettle: 5-minutes - .11 kWh or about 1-cent From what I've read on the subject, the only thing faster than an electric kettle is an instant hot water tap, but I don't know how much energy it would use. -Grainlady

Oh, no NEVER run the microwave oven empty. That's not what I was talking about at all. If your microwave is anything like the 3 I have, there is a SEPARATE timer feature that can be used even when the oven isn't cooking anything--just like the timer on your regular range can. Thanks ladies--you're exactly proving my point. Those of us of our age, DO these things for ourselves, as long as we're able. And then we do ask for help--understandably. I just think it's a shame to see healthy, able, intelligent young people who think they cannot choose a pair of curtains without professional help, or who will throw away a perfectly good item of clothing because they don't know how to do a minor repair, or who can't afford to pay their electric bill because they MUST have a cleaning lady regularly. It's also sad to see younger people cooking who don't understand enough about cooking to adapt recipes for what they have on hand (you need to bake two things at the same time, one calls for an oven temp of 350, one says 400--what to do? the recipe says to bake in an 8" square pan, you don't have one?? What now?) And this really wasn't about that electrick kettle--we all have our little splurges. It was more the fact that a mom was making concessions so her child wouldn't have to learn responsibility (and I DO understand worrying about the kids burning the place down--don't think I'm not sympathetic to the situation. Been there, worried about it--LOL.)

Chisue, I was addressing the cordless vs corded kettle and you're comparing electric to non-electric. The cordless electric is similar in ease to the stove top you use, but having a kettle I can walk away from and know it's going to turn off if I forget it, is worth a lot to me. Especially before I've had my morning coffee. A few times when I had a stove-top, I've set the kettle on the stove and gone out to fill the bird feeders, or taken the garbage out or similar and been distracted by the ripe raspberries, or the weeds sneering at me and forgot about the kettle. Never burned the house down, but as I get older, I worry more about that and the security of an appliance turning itself off is worth it to me.

It's not a kettle, Sue, but have you ever considered a Hot Shot? You pour the water in the top and it heats it super fast and then shuts off. I use mine almost every day and so does my mother, use hers. They work great and are very safe. They're perfect if you only want a small amount of hot water, like a pint, and it's boiling hot.

I imagine they are all good. I have a cuisinart and a Russell Hobbs and have had them for years and years. I thought the R Hobbs had died 10 or more years ago, so got the Cuisinart only to find/discover the cord had worn out. Replaced cord and it is still my favorite, must be 20 or more years. And, yes, prior to these, I burned dry and broke many a glass pyrex one.

Kframe, I like the looks of that Proctor Silex; looks very much like my tea pot that I make tea in. Price is right, too. That is a nice one also that you got for your Mom. I hope she is doing well.

Flamey, you reminded me that I used to have a Hot Shot. Always took it with me when I was going to be away for a few days at a convention, or when a car full of us girls would go on an extended shopping trip. Wonder what I ever did with it?

I'll be checking locally to see what is available but I wanted opinions from the KT Seal of Approval committee. ;-)

Our son gave us one a few years ago after DH had burned out 4 different teakettles that year, if not more. It is great, and boils water faster than the stove. It does shut off automatically after coming to a full boil. His work had one and he said they all like it there too. I will look up the brand when I go downstairs. We use it every day.

It is Chefs Choice International brand. It is great and we have used it all day long for maybe 4 years now. It boils quickly, and it shuts off automatically when it has come to a full boil or if you turn it on and it is empty.

You can use a coffee maker to make hot water. Just leave out the coffee. When the water gets hot, the thermostat flips to a keep warm setting.

One caveat: Turn the pot off when the water gets low.

An electric, thermostatically controlled, tea kettle probably better suits your needs.

Years ago, I had a gas range from Sears that had one burner with a sensor - I believe it was marketed as "A burner with a brain". This was a thermostatic device that rested against the bottom of a pan or kettle. It adjusted the flame to maintain a user set temperature. If this was set to 150 F, conceiveably, it would keep the burner from melting the bottom of a kettle if the water boiled away.

I had # 41 the Braun one,only in black.While it did work great,it sprang a leak in less than 2 years.Now i just get my water from our hot/cold water station and then zap it in the micro for another 30 seconds.Works for me,and leaves me free counter space.
