This is the new post with everyone names. If your name is NOT on the list please let me know ASAP.

This is what we have decided to do. When you get your project done you are to NAME it, this is part of the creative process and send it to solstice98. She will put all the pictures together and have a slideshow or something. We will be voting without knowing whose project we are voting on.

A new challenge:

The challenge THEME is: Black and white and _______ all over. This means your main colors will be black and white (gray will be accepted) with an accent color(s) of your choice.

This is a challenge to create a quilted something, 16 inch square up to as big as you like. But it must have been made for this challenge, no previous projects excepted.

The deadline is August 20th

The entire forum, including the participants, will be eligible to judge on your execution and workmanship.

All entries are to be sent to solstice98. We will then have a cut off for voting (maybe a week)

The winner will receive a prize!

This is open to all forum members.

Thanks for the "progress report." I am getting more and more excited at the prospect of seeing everyone's entries. My "black & white & ? all over" quilt is hanging on the bedroom wall, where I often gaze at it. This is even pushing me to get going on some UFO's. I feel the urge rising up several times a day, so I am looking forward to the weekend!

Would not sweat the backsplash now either, and without seeing the plan or the style cabs, think that Subway tiles may look busy and detract from the granite (due to lots of grout lines)...large tiles or travertine might be better. Also where and how close to high abuse (stove back, sink) areas are the back splash areas For floors, dont dismiss natural wood colors, such as bamboo. My SIL did her kitchen in dark mahogany cabs (upper), stained some of the base ones a sage, put in granite, and a light wood bamboo floor with enough brownish veining tones in it to compliment the mahogany. The light floor makes the mahogany pop without feeling dark and her touches of color show well as a result. The bamboo flooring can hold up fine in a kitchen but perhaps not a high traffic with 4 kids. We have wood parquet (highly sealed) in our kitchen which gives a light maple glow with st steel counters and dark cherry cabs. That has worked well too and last 20 years. I like the wood as it is forgiving to stand on and work. And fewer things break if dropped. Good luck.

LOL.......I have been so busy with my business, aside from the teacup paper piecing and May block lotto haven't even been in my sewing room for months. I did go out a couple nights ago and bought a whole bolt of black cotton however, so I do have something done for the challenge, and also decided on the pattern for the piece. One I'd been wanting to try for a year or two. That's what challenges are all about aren't they? To give you that little nudge to make a dream become a reality?

I think that the first one (black, white, red) is "contemporary" and they were going for a certain amount of post modernism, and keeping a restricted palette. It's hard to say what it looked like with furniture but I would say the furniture was also black white and red and maybe other primary color. I think it's kind of a Patrick Nagel Poster come to life. The second one, on the surface, sounds the same, but is really a lot different. I would call it a sort of "High Glamour Contemporary" more in a "disco" inspired kind of way. It's not postmodern although some of the elements have roots in post-modernism. I have an idea of what sort of person wants something like this. I had a friend who had a client who came home from the nail salon one day and wiggled her heavily tipped and manicured talons at him and said "I want my Dining Room to look like this". Personally I could deal with the first house on some level, because it's a relative "blank" except for the Memphis-y wallpaper and the bathrooms. I would be extremely uncomfortable in the house in this post. I do think the kitchen in this house is more successful than the one in the first house, which just looks sort of tired and non-committal with the grey instead of black.

Thanks for replying and offering advice! ! I ended up painting it all bright white. Since all of my furniture is white, it fits nicely. Now here is my next question. I bought a cedar chest yesterday for $75. I already bought two antique end tables for the living room that were two-tone. The legs were gray and top was white. I repainted them basically the same. ...used my gray wall color on the legs and white semi gloss on top. Now I'd like your advice...paint cedar chest the same? White lid, gray sides? All white? Black?? Thank you! Beth

dian57 the pictures will not be posted until the 21 or so. They are going to Kate and will be post all at the same time.

I worked a little on my project yesterday. I know time is running out!

PICTURES

Just a reminder for everyone: please send pictures (not more than 3) to me at solstice98@att.net and I'll post them on the 21st. My plan is to put them all together in a slide show for one post and then to post one picture of each quilt on another post. That way the people with dial up can check out the slide show, which should load faster for them, and get an idea of which quilt they would like to vote for. The post with all the individual pictures will probably be huge and will load very slowly unless you've got a high speed connection.

Be sure to include a brief description if you like! Maybe something about your inspiration for the quilt, or the technique you used or anything about it that made it special and fun for you.

I'll be at work on the 21st so they may not get posted until late evening - I know it will be hard to be patient so I'll try to get them up as quickly as possible!

This is a request to remove my name from the Black and White and? I will be undergoing heart surgery on Wednesday of this week and have not been able to finish my project...Lord willing all will go well and I will be back to quilting soon...sorry for the inconvenience..Val

Oh, Val, that's awful! But hopefully the surgery will remedy whatever is wrong and you can go on with life and quilting feeling better. I'll be thinking of you. Maybe after you get back to quilting, you will finish the project and show it to us even if it doesn't get in in time to be voted on.

Holy moley! Is this a surprise or did you know it was coming?

For what it's worth, my husband had some cardiac surgery several years ago -- worst 4 or 5 hours of my life. But once it was over he was liberated from something that had become an increasingly severe problem over the course of a few decades. We would both go through it again in a heartbeat.

I hope and trust that you'll be looking back on this and grateful for the improvement one day soon.

I had two minor Heart Attacks..one in 87 and one in 96...then I seemed to be fine until June. Third one was worse and they decided to do something about it quick before there is another...as I said..Lord willing I will be back fit and fiddle in no time...my trust in Him is strong and if it is His will I will survive this. It is in His hands. I have to much quilting to do before I am permanently done.

You're fortunate that you have doctors taking an aggressive stance with it.

My m-i-l was one of those women who died of a "sudden" heart attack after making the rounds of doctors for months when she knew d*mned well she wasn't feeling well. She was one of those women who didn't have heart attacks. =o But she sure collected a lot of Rxs for antidepressants and bills for tests. =o

My fingers will be crossed for you.

I am so sorry to hear that, Val. You will be in my prayers.

I may have to withdraw, but not yet. I haven't been able to sew for a week, my diverticulitis has been acting up and I haven't been able to get downstairs to sew. I may be able to finish, just giving you a heads up.

Whee Haw..........I just came down from my sewing room and mine is finished and quilted. Alls I have left to do is bind off the last three sides, and it's done.

I'm just biting the bit to see what everyone else came up with. You have such lee-way on the challanges, I imagine there'll be a little of everything.

I'm not celebrating yet.......I'll do that when I take the last stitch. But, if the Good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise, I'm going to get it done on time.

I will not be able to participate in the challenge. My mom had a stroke on July 7th. I have been taking turns with my sisters visiting her in rehab and she came home today. I haven't had time to make my project. Count me out. Sorry.

This is Nana's DH...she came thru surgery with flying colours...will probably be home in a week or so...she asked me to post this before she went into surgery...prayers have been answered...God Bless

Wonderful news about Val!

Darlene, I'm so sorry about your mom's stroke, but hope rehab has restored her to a point where she is enjoying life again. My mother also suffered a stroke and I know it can make people feel depressed.

Oh my - prayers for Nana & chicki1 & their families...........

I am dropping out of this challenge, I simply over committed & can't get it finished and I couldn't decide how to complete it. I thought I had the hard part done! I'll post a pic at a later date of the unfinished piece and ask for suggestions on finishing it. I am sorry. I hate to back out.

I really look forward to seeing all the completed pieces & reading about your inspirations, etc. My contribution will be voting :).

I received the photo from Sharon for the geezerfolks/Salijo team. Sorry to hear that some have had to drop out but I certainly understand it; we quilt for fun and it shouldn't be a source of additional stress.

My thoughts and prayers are with those of you who have had struggles with family or health this summer!

is sad that some have to drop out of the challenge but the positive news about Val and Darlene's mother is wonderful. About stroks, they aren't always bad. I had one 11 years ago and recovered without any major problems so heads up, it isn't always the end of the world. Jayne

FYI - received Caliope's photo today too.

Wow! What a gathering of beautiful quilts we have assembled! I can hardly wait to post the photos. I've had the opportunity to be looking at them for weeks and I can't decide which I like best. I think it's going to be hard for everyone to pick just one.

After spending the weekend in bed with a virus I have gotten even further behind. I am afraid I will have to with draw from the challenge. I will be doing good to get birthday blocks out on time and just wont manage to get mine completed. I hate to miss out on the fun, but look forward to seeing everyone's projects.

I'll be watching for the email, cziga! I have 14 pictures (or sets of pictures) so far, so yours will make 15.

A couple other people have said they are almost done but there's a few of you we haven't heard from for a while... how's it coming quilters? If you've sent photos but I don't have "picture received" by your name please let me know asap and resend your pictures. I don't want to leave anyone out!

Kate, my pictures are on the way -in fact you will get three copies LOL. Who knows what happened there. Really looking forward to seeing all the pics!! I will be visiting a friend who has high speed -so the dial up dilemna at my cottage will not interfere.

Thanks to everyone for your prayers for my mom. She is home and learning to move around the house. PT came yesterday and showed us things we can do with her. She can do more than we thought :). Still helping out and working. Can't wait to see all the quilts. Starting to get back to the machine. Good luck to all.

Patsy, NO! Don't throw it away! If you aren't happy with the overall look, then how about just a couple closeup shots? I've made some quilts I didn't like too, but I bet there are some redeeming qualities.

Goodness, no, please don't throw it away! Mine is FAR from perfect and I see loads of mistakes (and not subtle ones), but I'm just happy to have finished and be able to submit it! Please include yours :) Even if the execution didn't come off exactly as you'd hoped or envisioned, it would be very interesting just to see everyone's ideas . . . how they interpreted the challenge. That is one of the best parts.
