Matching trim colors with prefinshed windows

Am I over thinking this? I also posted in the building forum to see their opinions.

We are doing a remodel and were all set to order the prefinished white Anderson 400s. Then I looked at a color sample and realized the Anderson white reads really gray in my house. The color will be fine for the exterior. I could order white exterior and pine interior and have my contractor paint. But, then the window grids will have to be two different colors (removeable) or not match the interior window paint.

Am I making a bigger deal of this than I should? Or should I look for a brand that has a prefinished white that is compatible with the rest of my house?

So funny. The few responses in the building forum are the opposite of the decorating forum. "Get the good window with the factory finish and the color is no big deal." Sigh.

I would get the pine and have him paint it to match, but that's just me.

I don't know the mfg. of my windows, but they're a dark taupey/gray sort of color, very nice too. My home was built 4 years ago, and before that all the windows in the area were white since that was all that was available.

Do a little research to find out if there are other manufacturers similar to Anderson that offer colors other than white. Just an FYI. ;o)

The trim custom color matched (paint) to the gutters is a good plan. The singular factor of the windows being white isn't a good enough reason -- or enough of a reason -- to paint all the trim on the house white. Would be nice if the siding contrasted in the way of value - meaning would be nice if the siding were the *same color* just darker or lighter by several shades than the trim/gutters. It's also okay if the trim/gutters are the same color as the siding and blends together. It's a preference. Taking the opportunity to use contrast at the trim/gutter & siding point can help define your home's architecture and contribute to better curb appeal -- like I said, matter of preference. If you're columns are going to be more than the current post-like shape, I'd paint those the Dover White. If not, they should be the same color as the trim. Actually, if you end up with beefier columns than what I see in the pix, they could be the custom tan color too. I happen to prefer white on columns and that would be a way to repeat the white window trim. Doing so -- arguably -- messes with the standard 'rules' of color hierarchy for exteriors. Treating a classic element like a column in a classic color like a white trumps the hierarchy thing -- from my color point of view any way.

@Home Interiors with Ease I am in a similar boat. Our builder ordered standard Pella White prepainted windows throughout our new build. We just discovered that they lean very grey. I would have preferred Bright White. All my furniture, flooring, etc. are browns and warmer toned. The builder is doing a custom trim. Can I paint the window trim and baseboards a warmer white? I was planning on Manchester Tan at 50% for the interior and now am worried that all the colors will clash!

Thanks for your advice. I should mention that the house is a early 1900’s colonial with an addition. It’s a very historic home. Cedar roof, copper gutters etc. We’ve completely gutted it and added on. I’ve attached a similar style house for reference.

Do you have to have grids? We eliminated that issue in the remodel by choosing single pane windows. The exterior is aluminum clad, the interior is painted wood. The rest of the windows in the house are double hung with true muntins, but we wanted something different in the addition.

Okay so we are definitely true to our forums! LOL They are right about making sure you get a good window though. I think THAT should be your first concern as well because they sure aren't cheap to replace if/when they fail. KWIM? We enlarged our kitchen window over the sink and replaced it with a casing window so I could open it easier. I was pretty amendment about getting the wood ones until we found out that the wood framing is actually wider than the vinyl and therefore takes up more of the glass space (or in our case the view). That's when we grudgingly agreed to go with the vinyl and to my surprise its worked out really well. I don't see any variation between the white of the vinyl and the softer white we used on our trim. NONE at all! In fact when standing at the sink, I don't even notice it has a vinyl frame. Just food for thought.

In our remodel the new(vinyl)windows with the grids between the glass and french door(Fiberglass/Vinyl) are the factory white but the trim is color matched to the kitchen cabinets. They do not match and I think it looks just fine.

Sherwin Williams can mix Anderson window white. We had it done and it does have a slight gray tone.
