Finished my pair for the twins due in August. Will try and make a couple of other gifts for their two sisters before I send it.

I loved this fabric collection the first moment I saw it. It also has a collection in yellows as well as the peach and the lime. It's a Moda collection called Mirabelle by Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts, a local lady. I just did a simple Irish Chain pattern.

Gift for family in Germany- need suggestions

A gift card to a nice deli nearby-to-them where they might select some special cheeses, salami, wursts, and spreads that they might not otherwise treat themselves. Germans LOVE their preserved meats and cheeses as a light supper. Certificate for tickets to a Berlin concert or play (again a treat they might not otherwise have). A gift card to the huge, I mean huge! KaDeWe department store where they could select from everything in the store (including a big top floor of high end foods, as well as a restaurant). If you need to bring your gift with you from the States, then I'd suggest some pairs of Levi's (if your daughter can get the sizes), or electronics (like an iPad mini depending on your budget of course!!). Both those things are so much more expensive in Germany that they are often bought here by visiting Germans. If the budget is much smaller, then another item they can't get there but like to have is bags of chocolate chips for baking. (It's so weird that they have to pay a monster price at a specialty shop to get the imported US ones!) You could bring a cookie plate themed from your home area, and some bags of chips. Weekend holidays are big as a way to get away from the city. There is a region of Bed and Breakfast type accommodations in the forested area north of Berlin, and you might give them a nice weekend getaway for the upcoming Spring. You probably already know this from previous experience, but the gift wrapping is also extremely important, even for a gift card or certificate, and your special care with that will definitely be noticed and appreciated!

That's a beautiful hybrid; I can see why you bought it. I'm not familiar with that potting mix but the plant appears healthy so that's probably not the issue. This hybrid is predominantly made up of warmth-loving species which are happiest when temperatures are above 25 degrees Celsius year round. These guys will tolerate/survive cooler conditions but growth will slow down or even stop when it gets too cold. I have a P. violacea (one species in your plant's background) which grows fastest during our hot humid summers and then does an excellent plastic plant impression once the temps consistently drop under 20 degrees C. As some of these warmth-loving species are also not particularly fast-growing this stop-start pattern means it'll take a lot longer for a seedling to reach maturity. If you could consistently provide the warmth and humidity - perhaps via a terrarium under lights with a little fan? - your orchid should grow faster. I'm not familiar with any of these growing methods so can't really help, sorry. Maybe contact a local orchid society in your area?

Viola, Be patient, or I should say, stand back and get out of your hardy kiwi's way. They like to grow! Your hardy kiwis will take over the pergola and look beautiful. Nothing can compete with them and flourish on the horizontal pergola with the degree of competition a hardy kiwi will give it. You do know that the fruiting kiwi need both a male and female vine to get fruit? Also, kiwi blooms so early, almost always before the last frosts of spring. Its blooms are extremely sensitive to freeze damage. Fruit set is therefore very undependable, even here in my warmer SW Pennsylvania zone. Your kiwi vines will grow like weeds, though, ornamental variegated ones or fruiting ones, otherwise, just not set fruit regularly if they are the fruiting kind. Beware of spring frost damage to the emerging foliage, too. It will recover, and make more new leaves, no sweat, but if the variegated non fruiting form, the replacement leaves may not show white, pink, and red too much, just be green. Male variegated kiwi are the showy ones, not the female kiwi vines. The ornamental, not fruiting, variegated kiwi are thugs, too. Nice, lovely thugs, but thugs nevertheless. What I suggest is this. On the south facing side of the pergola, construct a vertical trellis, and grow a climbing rose(s) on it, not up onto the pergola. You can keep kiwi branches from trespassing down onto the rose's trellis pretty easily. Just nip them as they trespass. Winter hardy climbing roses for Montreal are numerous. Start with looking at William Baffin....easy to grow, rock solid winter hardy, heavy spring bloomer, sparse thereafter, unfortunately, but it is not shy about growing. You can grow clematis intertwined with a climbing rose on the trellis, not up onto the pergola. The akebia is too aggressive and gets too large; ditto for the climbing hydrangea, both too big. Use them at your peril. You will have a jumbled mess, needing necessary, diligent, and regular pruning back. Moses

Your quilts are so precious! You did a wonderful job piecing and quilting. I especially like your radius corners, or whatever they're called. It must be so hard to have them so far away. Hope you can all get together soon.

Very sweet, Linda. The simplicity of the Irish Chain really brings out the border fabric and it is very eye appealing! You're right.....they are beauties! Wonderful job.

And we have two new babies in Germany as of early this morning! Two little boys to be welcomed by their two sisters. What a joy. This woman carried TWINS to full term, one 6-1/2# and other 6-3/4#, both 19-1/2" long. Can you imagine! I don't think I could have done it without whining a lot.

We are anxiously awaiting our pictures. Everyone wanted at least one boy and since they didn't want to know the sex, it was a wonderful surprise. I'm not the official Grandma but can congratulate the ones over there.
