Cleaning old white metal kitchen cabinets?

These are old. Probably from the '50's. They are getting greasy/grungy. I tried hot soapy bleach water, it helped, but didn't get them as clean as I'd like.

Try the Mr.Clean erasers ,or the original Orange cleaner.Both cut through the grease very well.

If there is a Dollar Tree near you, buy "Awesome" spray cleaner. It is great--especially for removing grease or cigarette smoke.

if you can get it to be mostly white, even if it has lost its luster, keep it, IMO. (if it's just gross and looks dirty all the time, bin it.) Those sinks are chockablock full of character that you will lose if you replace it. It is the perfect touch for a cottage. Also, in a cottage, your expectations are a little lower about newness. I wouldn't apply any paint or anything. I'd rely on bleach. For the cabs, maybe spray them so that you get than nice, even, glossy look. I would be more confident if it was one of the older ones with the higher splash, wall-mount faucet and apron front. why? dinnalo - do you have any pics of your kitchen? would love to see it.

Your kitchen is wonderful. If the tiles are thin, you may be able to get away with overlaying new tile using a high level mastic. Another suggestion for the walls would be using tile grout for a textured wall. I did this over my fireplace tiles and not a crack in 5 years. Otherwise, cutting the dry wall and replacing with tile backer board is the right way. The link below has history, photos and many colors of original metal kitchens. Have fun. No abrasives like magic sponges. No bleach. All of that will damage your cabinets. Try Peroxide. Microfiber. Just the same 3% kind you’d use to clean up a knee scrape. Plain soap and water is all you should ever need for liquid spills on cabinets. If soap and water doesn’t do it, then you have a coatings issue. Real cabinet manufacturers do not use paint. Manufactured cabinets coatings must pass KCMA certifications tests that involve resistance to stains. All bets are off for anything else staining in the future if these are back yard custom or home house painted.

Wanda, is that the Purple Liquid that smells so good? I found it once and can't find it again. I used it at the Thrift Store on old items.

Angelaid, It is a shame that you are renting right now. You could get a sander and remove the paint. On a HGTV show they sanded down to the metal and it looked awesome and modern like the Stainless Steel Kitchens.

Angela, I've tried every cleaner out there and I can honestly say that this frugal cleaning recipe works better than anything! Honest!

To one gallon of very warm water add:
1/2-1 cup sudsy ammonia
1/2-1 cup white vinegar
1/4-1/2 cup baking soda

Rinse with clear water.

Never mix bleach with ammonia!!!! Or with anything for that matter. Very dangerous and potentially lethal.

Gayle, "Awesome" is amber-colored--and it just smells like cleaning solution. It really is awesome for cleaning, and you don't have to rinse. I used to use ammonia all the time, but this is so much better, and it's inexpensive. It does an amazing job of cleaning our garage floor also.

That purple cleaner you're thinking of might be Fabuloso. It has a strange smell that is hard to describe but isn't totally offensive.

The other thing on metal cabinets is a good high gloss paint on it makes them easy to clean. Ideally if you can get them painted at a body shop or something when they are doing a car or something it can be cheap and an extremely durable finish.

I just purchased me one too at the Thirft Store.I used the Mr.Clean Erasers.I love them things.I lay one on my floor and than mop over my floors with it,than trash it,.It makes my floor so clean and Shiny.I am truly a believer of the Erasers.

I was gonna try tannatonks recipe yesterday. I had no vinegar and no baking soda. I KNOW I just bought a gallon of vinegar. And I always have boxes of baking soda in the kitchen and bathroom. *shaking head*
