Dishwasher handle sticking out?

Hi All,

Were getting down to the wire here with the start of our kitchen reno this Thursday (wooohooooo!!!)

So our current 8 year old dishwasher conveniently died two days ago! We will have the dishwasher in the peninsula so we will be working over it quite a lot.

Does the large handle of the dishwasher get in your way when you work at your counter? Does it bother you? I could go either way, though I prefer the controls on the top (now that it's an option) so we're trying to make this decision today. Any thoughts??

My last Bosch had the open end sticking out handle and I hated it. I knew this time I did not want a handle. I am really short and the little bit further back the handle made me was uncomfortable.

We have the Miele and has a handle but not the open ended handle - I would not like having the ends sticking out - I would catch my clothes on them.
My oven does have the edges - but don't think as much of a problem.

i have the moentrol 3-function transfer valve (3320) with the monticello trim. my friend mounted in a bit tilted, so i am not sure how it is "supposed" to be necessarily, but you can tell how far in the handles are supposed to go, at least on mine, by the screws that mount the trim onto the valve. the handles go back to where they almost touch the screws. to my eye, it looks like they are out too far, but it is the design of the trim. i can see the metal piece that keeps the hot water from being turned too hot (it's like a sleeve that goes over the valve stem) but nothing black. i had very good success with the moen customer service. their documentation stinks for amateurs like myself, but the customer service responses helped a lot. lisa Here is a link that might be useful: my trim and valve

Dishwasher next to range.. what am I missing about this?

One other negative might be limiting the amount of storage directly next to the range. Depending on how much range-related storage you need, you might have to move away from the range in order to get something you need (pots, pans, bakeware, utensils, etc). Also, my dishwasher handle sticks out beyond the countertop overhang and the dishwasher door sticks out a little further than my cabinetry doors. Depending on how close you like to get to the countertop for work next to the range, you might find it less comfortable. I certainly wouldn't find having a dishwasher next to the range a deal breaker if it's the best layout you can achieve with the given space.

Post a photo of the copy of the approved plan they were supposed to build to. Does it show deeper sides with the adjacent counters butting into them? Enough room for 24.375 plus the 2 inches behind so that the sides of the refrigerator BOX can be installed flush with the front of the cabinetry? Normally a cabinet shop would make this allowance or at least go over the options and differences. But if someone else did the design and it was adhered to, you don't have much to stand on. Also, is the opening the correct height because the hinges not fitting into the opening (like the photo above) can keep it from going back as well? Did you by chance consider another refrigerator that would fit properly? That might be the easiest and most economical way to address the issue. Switch them up and sell the first one. And to the guy that commented about "custom shops" ordering components, this is a common practice throughout the industry. It's very rare to find a cabinet shop that builds every part of a cabinet anymore and as long as what is ordered is of acceptable quality and fits, what's the problem?

I recommend doing some research on the Appliance Forum when you're ready to look at specific brands and models.

Will you be working over the DW often for important tasks like prepping? The first unit we bought for this house 13 years ago had a closed-ended handle. I didn't like working in front of it. Now we have a Kenmore I don't like, but at least the handle is small and hidden within the panel. Much better IMHO.

Some are fine, some aren't (but are usually better for towels).

I currently have a Fisher Paykel dish drawer and the handles are barely there. No problem with 'em. Previously I had a paneled DW (also FP drawer type) and it was paneled so I picked my own handles. I got ones that were wide enough to put a towel on but sleek enough to not poke me.
So paneled is option if you just don't like anything.
Just go to the appliance store and check 'em out. There are only a few that will be uncomfortable.

We just installed a KitchenAid sw with an arched handle snout a month ago. I prep while standing directly in front of it - never notice the handle at all.

I have a Bosch with the hidden controls and handle in front...my kitchen has only been done for 2.5 months, but I haven't even noticed it or thought of it as a problem.

This is a bigger issue than the appliance itself. It has to do with your layout. You should not have a prep space located over such an important part of your cleanup zone. It leads to inefficient work and frustration. If you only have a single sink, then the cleanup zone with DW should be on one side of it, and the prep zone with trash should be on the other. You need to re-examine your layout to figure out how to accomplish this.

Hi all, Yes we have models in mind. Not anything high end though we are looking at a Bosch or two. Mostly Kenmore actually. Seems from what I'm hearing here, that the curved handle doesn't really bother anyone. That's what I'm hoping for. Reno starts in three days. Planning & layout are done. GreenDesigns.... We have to work within our constraints. Believe it or not, this is the least 'inefficient' layout of all. Wish I could change it all, but it's not possible. there's always next time...

Due to the same kinds of layout restrictions, I prep over the DW and trash pull-out. Last two DWs have had integrated handle, I think the 'snout' handle mentioned above, and it's not a problem.

As for layout: I have only an 8.5 'sliver' of counter on the other side of the sink, where we had to remove the cabinets and counter to accommodate the door for a new addition. Even when I had the counter space there, and the stove was on that side of the room, I still prepped on the other side of the sink, over the DW. And now, with a second sink, and with an island and another counter within a pivot/step of the sink, everyone still wants to prep in the space that we've always used!
