Dishwasher next to range.. what am I missing about this?

I know there are issues of countertop support. And aethetically it isn't ideal (unless the DW is paneled.) But if these are addressed, what other reason is there not to put a range and DW next to one another?

In a very tight layout I'm working on, I have to make some compromises. One of the best seems to be having sink>DW>range all in a row. That leaves enough work space on both sides of the range. It's an electric range, if that matters...

Mine are together. The only thing I don't like about it is that the different brands aren't aesthetically compatible. They are both stainless, one is a Dacor and the other a Bosch So, I'm going to move the dishwasher over when the new cabinets come in.

I think if you dishwasher is paneled, then there's no issue.

I have this because I had two choices. Range, sink, DW; or Range DW Sink. The DW automatically gives one 18-24" of set down on that side of the range.I have an end panel with a face frame between it and the range for support.

Why people don't like it:

In a larger kitchen it places a clean up function in the prep-cooking zone, because you are prepping in front of the DW so someone can't clean up without asking you to move.
Or, if you are on the team that keeps the DW door open a lot, (I'll beat my dead horse again: I Don't Get It), then the DW is an obstacle in the cooking zone. In a small kitchen you probably can't do this anyway.

Actually, contrary to william612, you're missing the most important option. Most folks looking for a "wood or drywall look" in a hood will build a custom hood surround out of whatever material they like--wood, stone, drywall, copper, whatever--and then put a hood liner inside it. That gives you 100% freedom to get the exact look you want, and then pick a liner from any of dozens of sources. As to cost, of course it varies. If you choose a hand-hammered copper hood surround, as a friend of mine did recently, then bring $$. On the other hand, a simple wooden surround can be built by your cabinetmaker for not a ton of money. Even with the addition of the hood liner, your total costs may not exceed those of an off the shelf unit by much. As always, the best option is to search this Forum for threads on ventilation and hoods. There is an abundance of information.

All those ranges would basically be considered "pro ranges". "For the money" the NXR is the best deal by far, there are of course many other stoves just as good and even better in some respects but for $2000 nothing else comes close. We have had ours for 17 months now with no issues, looks great, cooks fantastic with all 4 burners being both super low simmer and 15K BTU, nice size oven, convection, Infrared broiler, nice thick heavy duty stainless oven racks, heavy duty cast iron burner grates, door does not get hot. What's not to like especially for just a $100 or so more than a Sears Kenmore that is not even remotely as nice.

There are very few DW detergents that don't smell like bleach and/or fragrance. Method Smarty tabs are one of the few. That's my number-1 requirement. That they're tabs is not important to me; if the same no-bleach no-fragrance detergent were offered in a powder form, I'd buy that too. I do find that just the 1/2 tab works great in my Miele unless dinner has been unusually greasy or stuck-on. There are so many reports of dishes/glasses etching, and I believe it's cause people use too much detergent in their DWs (and that people rinse before DWing). The Method Smarty tabs are easy to break in half (which halves the price overall too), and I don't have to mess with a powder or gel, just plop in the 1/2 tab in the dispenser.

Kay, how are you? I haven't been around for a while, I had to take a break and get myself together. To everyone I want to tell you that I am so sorry for your loss and sadness, it is the worst pain anyone can have BUT it does get better, I promise. My heart and soul mate died 14 months ago and I wanted to die with him, I was in so much pain and so scared of what was going to happen to me without him; life must go on. I was told that it doesn't get better but it gets different and they were right. I still weep and some days are bad but I have more good days as time goes on. Life won't seem so alien after a while, I just felt like I didn't belong here any more, not in my home, my job or this world but I did finally settle with my feet back on the ground. It's not easy but you have to push youself to live and it eventually gets easier. Please take care of yourselves, get help if you need it and work hard at being strong, we will never forget and we will always love them and happier days are ahead. God Bless all, Mav.

Mine are in a line with only a 12 inch cab between stove and dishwasher and it works fine. I too have a small area so it was the right choice. If i had a bigger kitchen i would have liked the dishwasher near a cleanup sink closer to the dining room but in my small area this is ideal.

Pal, there's prep space elsewhere, so the counter over the DW wouldn't be the only spot. I'll continue drawing this option- thanks for all your input!

One other negative might be limiting the amount of storage directly next to the range. Depending on how much range-related storage you need, you might have to move away from the range in order to get something you need (pots, pans, bakeware, utensils, etc). Also, my dishwasher handle sticks out beyond the countertop overhang and the dishwasher door sticks out a little further than my cabinetry doors. Depending on how close you like to get to the countertop for work next to the range, you might find it less comfortable. I certainly wouldn't find having a dishwasher next to the range a deal breaker if it's the best layout you can achieve with the given space.

Mine are currently right in a line, L to R range, dishwasher, sink. I hate it with a burning passion because if there are two people in the kitchen trying to work, they trip all over each other. Also, for us, the "prep space" above the dishwasher is also the landing place for dirty dishes, and the dishes win every time.
