Holy Heck!!!! I Finally Finished The Train Quilt (pics)

I know that some of you have already seen this top a couple of times. But guess what I finally finished the quilting on it. Wooohoooo!!! It only took me 2 years to complete. Conner can't wait for it to go on his bed.

Here are a couple of pictures of the top quilting. I used a varigated thread and I really like how it turned out. My quilting around the trains isn't great, but heck they were hard.

And here is the back. I just used a blue to match the flannel.

Hope you all enjoy my pics. I am just so glad this UFO is finally done.

Let me add to Mary's last post. If you didn't see your block. I have them. Mary wanted to work on some projects of her own. She had a few blocks left over and I have some of my own to add to it. So I told her I would finish up the last of the blocks so she could move on to some quilting of her own. Once I have a few extra minutes or days to put the top together I will take it over to Mary's and try out her lovely long arm and then bind it up and post a picture for everyone to see. Once that one is done we will have made 12 quilts of valor all from blocks donated by all of you on the forum. Amy

I love your quilt. It makes you just want to grab it up and hug it, it looks so soft and cuddly. I love the design and I love it that you just started it and was clueless and then made it into THAT!!!!! This always puts me in mind of the story that if a bee knew it were aerodynamically impossible due to their body shape to fly, then they couldn't. But they didn't know, and they fly. My tumbling blocks quilt was started on an act of faith. I didn't know that was "supposed" to be a hard pattern. I didn't even use a pattern. I just figured it out on my own and cut my own templates. If I had known it was supposed to not be for people attempting their first real quilts, it would never have graced my mother's bed before she died. I have you beat for UFO's btw. I started an embroidered animal block quilt for my son in 1967 and finished it for my grandson in 1992. That's what......twenty five years? You did a beautiful job.

I am in exactly the same place with my red oak floors :( my floors look just as orange as in the pictures... and the variations and wood grain are much more pronounced than I wanted. I have the flooring company coming in on Monday to put down the third coat of poly - do I have any options at this point? Or just a matter of it mattering less once I get more used to the new color...? I had this same level of shock and discomfort with my wall color (had to leave my apartment for the evening just to soothe myself!), but once they sanded the floors - I realized I loved the wall color, just that my old floor finish was clashing with it. Now after staining the floor - I am back to feeling they really clash... and I really wish I had just opted for no stain and a natural finish instead... I’d take that look over what I now have any day. At least - that’s how it feels right now. To the original poster - @lacollar - (or anyone else with a similar experience) - did you eventually get used to (or even fall in love with?! :)) your floors... even though at first it felt like the choice of stain color was a huge mistake? Has anyone tried tinting the final coat to tone down the orange/reds? Does that work? Appreciate any help/advice. Thank you all!

OK here are a few more pics since some have asked... For the pantry, remember that I mentioned there was a big "header" behind the doors so that the studs could be removed. It's a load bearing wall where the pantry is, and that required by code that a header take it's place. It CAN be done. Remember, that is exactly what happens when you have windows or sliding glass doors -- a header takes the place of studs. It's the same concept, but it had to be so wide that we wanted to hide it. The cabinet-maker stained it so it's not obvious even with the doors open. The doors over the bookcases are fake doors to give it a finished look and to also hide the header. Also, we replaced the prep sink faucet finally.. and it too doubles as a pot filler. The other one was just too long necked for the sink and would have splashed water on the floor. This one works just as well.

Turned out great, Amy!!

I remember those trains! I did them on an Irish chain for a baby quilt! I swore I'd never do it again! All those wheels were a major pain in the patooty!!! I totally understand the relief to having it done!

Thank you all for the kind words. The quilt was originally for Blake. Him and Hunter picked out all the fabrics themselves. But Conner likes it so much that Blake said it could go on his bed instead. What a great brother.

Your quilt is terrific and I love your pictures. I like the bright colors you used in the center accented with the train cars...really cute. My DH saw it also and said every little boy needs a train quilt! Your train border is superb...excellent work, a treasure!

That is so beautiful. I can tell you put a lot of work into it. What a great idea to use the varigated thread.

I have a feeling I'll be making one of these someday, as my husband is a train freak, and my daughter-in-law says that if she has a boy she wants to do his room in trains.

Sigh...it intimidates, though. I'm the kind that would drag this into a 3-year-long project!
