Finally! Here are the last two of the forum quilts. They will be sent to the only level one trauma hospital in Iraq's war zone.

Mary, are you done making the quilts?..I have a friend who has asked me if you needed more blocks?...your quilts are lovely and I can imagine the looks the boys will have when they get one of your precious quilts...Judy

Yes, I'm done for a while! I've made 3 QOV's on my own, and these 11 all this year. I need a break to do something different for a change.

Firefightersmom: I don't have a site to put a pattern on, and didn't have a pattern, anyway--just these two 12" blocks, which I quilted onto some low-loft polyester without any other backing, and I cut two pieces of a different batik the same size for a lining. Any pockets should be sewn onto the lining before putting the lining together. Sew the sides and bottom of the blocks and of the lining. To bind the top, I cut 2 strips about 3/4" longer than the width of the bag so that I could hem their ends to have non-fraying holes where the drawstring goes in. I stitched these strips separately to the quilted front and back of the bag, and then hand-stitched them down on the lining, but next time I plan to machine stitch these binding strips (on my bag, that's the black batik with daisies on it) to the bag from the lining side, catching in the ends of the handles as I go. Then I can fold the binding strips over and stitch them again from the front. I stitched all around very close to the top edge of the binding, too, stitching right through the handles as I came to them. The pieces I cut for the handles were about 9~10" long and 2&1/2" wide. I stiffened them with iron-on interfacing. I hope this is enough for your friend to be able to make a bag for herself. If she has any questions, I'll be glad to answer. Just in case she is not familiar with the 9-to-4 block, here is a link to a message that contains pictures showing how it was made. In the case of my bag, I used 4" squares, putting the lavender one in the middle and the 4 dark squares with pictures in them at the corners and used the same peachy-purple fabric for the middle of each side. The polka dot backing is just right! You made a great choice! ______________ I didn't get any sewing done this weekend but we tackled a job in the sewing room that's needed doing for a while. Remember the cat shelves we put up? Well after countless dashes up and down the shelves, the cats managed to loosen two of the shelves. The loosening tore big holes in the drywall too! So the shelves came down, then I patched the drywall and repainted the wall while Jim hunted for better shelf supports. He ended up with two brackets per shelf, anchored into the concrete block on the other side of the wall. Even the big cat (Jack continues to round out his figure!) can't make these wobble. No quilting, but the wall looks great and the cats are happy.

I sneaked in a little machine quilting this morning with my morning cuppa. I get withdrawal if I don't. LOL. I doubt if I'll tackle it again tonight. This is the Saturday I watch my little g'son for the day. What a pleasure. He is ten months old and has been walking a month now, and very happy and curious. That keeps granny running. I'm in Ohio too, and the forecast looks gruesome for the weekend. We have food, we have heat.......I can nest. If it does come down I 'ain'ta going nowhere, nohow' for a few days. I got caught in a sudden and unexpected white out last weekend and had to abandon my little foreign car and get rescued by my DH in the 4WD and go fetch the car a day later. Not going 'there' again. If it makes you all feel better, I have crops in the g'house for spring already and they're popping they little green heads up. We have poinsettia deliveries all next week. That ought to be good for a laugh as we slide around in the mess. Perhaps they'll revise the forecast. It happens. Yes, I'll try to finish up the log cabin and then sew together the blocks on the design way before I start my wool quilt (I am itching to get it started, but promised myself only one UFO at a time now). I got overwhelmed with them this year.

Raee - when you see boxes or frames with old photos, there is a way that relatives can be found. There is a facebook group called "Random acts of genealogy". You would be surprised how many people on there actually buy old photos from antique shops and garage sales and track down relatives. Some have even bought family bibles and tracked down relatives that never knew such things existed. I am lucky that some old family photos were passed down to us - we have charcoal drawings of my husband's GF and GGF. We have a tin print of GGGF, plus some other relatives had other photos of him. We have a number of others from husband's GM on his dad's side and her parents. I love looking at them, especially now that I am trying to learn about their lives in GA before they came to FL. Hubs would qualify as a SAR, and Florida Pioneer Family Member. He is 5th generation Floridian.

All the compliments are wonderful, and I thank you all.

But I take little credit - the wonderful people on the forum sent blocks, lengths of fabric for backings, and in some cases, money to defray the cost of batting.

YOU ALL deserve the congratulations!! And I will post any responses from the recipients if I get any.

Wow Mary...the quilts are beautiful! I'm peeking on my lunch hour - as I haven't had a chance to do anything but drop into the forum here and there for quite a while and am trying to catch up (again). I can't believe how many you've done, and how loevely they all came out. Thank you for the opportunity to contribute a little to this tremendous effort.

I'm so glad you checked in - I knew you were concerned that you hadn't seen your blocks! The eagle block was one of my absolute favorites out of all of them.

It was just that I tried to get an even mix of stars and other type blocks into every quilt - plus a special focus block for each, like your eagle, and Sandra's heart-in-hand block.

I hope everyone on the forum liked where their blocks ended up.

Let me add to Mary's last post. If you didn't see your block. I have them. Mary wanted to work on some projects of her own. She had a few blocks left over and I have some of my own to add to it. So I told her I would finish up the last of the blocks so she could move on to some quilting of her own. Once I have a few extra minutes or days to put the top together I will take it over to Mary's and try out her lovely long arm and then bind it up and post a picture for everyone to see. Once that one is done we will have made 12 quilts of valor all from blocks donated by all of you on the forum.

I too love that Eagle block. And when I was originally looking at the quilt DH came in and commented on liking it "special" too.

Mary, Thank you! From the wife of an OIF veteran. My DH was a medic in the c.a.s.h hospitals in Bagdad. Times can be so rough over there. This wonderful, snuggly momento from home will truly mean so much. Again Thank YOU!!

Jackie - posts like your's keep me going. Yes, I have taken a bit of a break on the QOV's, but I'm looking forward to helping Amy quilt the one she is doing.

After the first of the year I will probably sign up with the foundation to do quilting. Others will piece, and I still get to do the quilting, but someone else does the binding! This will work for me, and I can intersperse my own work with other people's work.

I had to let go of the idea that I could personally make a quilt for every soldier - I'd be insane and broke, LOL. But I will continue. I have 5 planned for the coming year.

Mary - Very nice quilts, you are a doll to donate so much time to putting them together!! I am sure your time and skills are greatly appreciated by the recipients.

I guess I came alone after this started, how did this get started, do you forward to a solider or through an organization?

I know this is an old thread, but I'm rained in today going through old ones garnering y'alls knowledge. I just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work on the quilts you've made for QOV. My husband received a QOV (not one of yours, I checked) in 2005 and we treasure it. It has a place of honor in our home as it should. It is humbling to be on the receiving end of a quilt after having made quilts for others because you know the love, sweat, tears, sometimes blood and just plain hard work that goes into each one. Blessings on you for giving of yourself and your talents.

Oh, thank you so much. The Quilts of Valor are a particular passion of mine. I only occasionally hear from the recipients, but, heck, they have enough on their plates.

So I really appreciate your acknowledgment! Would it be possible for you to post a photo of your husband's QOV? I'd love to see it.
