16 Year Old UFO Finished!!

This was one of the first quilts I ever started, before I had a clue about quilting. I really didnÂt know what I was doing when I started it.

Here is the original block.

This was my plan as to how the quilt would look when it was finished.

When I pulled it out a couple of years ago I finally realized that DUH all that is was squares on point with white sashing. Why in the holy heck am I dealing with all these horrible bias edges for squares on point? I put it away again. I finally pulled it out a couple of months ago and reworked my plan. I had so many blocks that were done and totally messed up that I incorporated more white to make it queen sized. The fabrics are very dear to me. They are from all the first sewing projects I had done making my DDÂs baby dresses. Now I can look at the quilt and remember her in her baby clothes.

The quilting was done by my LAQ. She did a fabulous job! I couldnÂt be happier. I tweaked the coloring in the close up so the quilting shows better.

Oh that is so pretty! Now don't you feel better now that it's finished and turned out so well? I bet you're ready to go to the next UFO!

What he said ... I've done it to battered floors in rental housing and they ended up looking still old, but well cared for, like Granny had been waxing and buffing all that time. It doesn't take off much, if any wood, so your floors won't get thinner. 1 - clean up the crud, remove staples and re-set any nails that stick out, scrape up the paint drips. Etc. 2 - Run the square scuffer/sander thing. 3 - OPTIONAL: Wipe on a penetrating oil stain that's medium between the darkest and lightest wood tones (optional, but it really boosts the color) 4 - wipe or brush on a satin-finish polyurethane penetrating sealer. If you do one room at a time, stopping carefully at the door, you don't see the transitions. If you custom blend a stain, be sure to write down what you used.

Thank you for the advice yesterday my moms christmas box came in i sent a text to his boyfriends phone saying you have gifts here from your grandma please arrange to pick them up ... Its too upsetting to me and the household when he just shows up when he pleases. He wrote me a five page letter about how bad i was and he wanted nothing else from my house. I gave a short reply ... Im being nice either you want the stuff or not dont treat your grandma like this and hurt her feelings over something that she has nothing to do with.. i have yet to get a reply i would assume he would want the 50 dollar card since money is an issue with him. I went through something simular with my mother as a teen only there was diff abuse there (attempted sexual abuse by her bf) and she has apologized and since has had a very nice husband for 12 years. We broke the cycle. I have in the past repeatedly apologized for yelling to much over 6 years ago but we had no abuse in our house . My late husband was very mentally abusive to me so he wittnessed that.. i am guilty in that respect and have repeatdlly apologized to him for that. His dad taught him well how to disrespect me and push my buttons. He has told people and family memebers for years how he has no goals.. i really do get what my son is going through i offered to go to counsiling with him he just wants to hate me for some reason i cant explain. I am so scared i have a 2 year old with my current husband and have changed every way i can for him to avoid the same out come. My new husband has been great to my son and even after my son complained because he didnt want my husband disciplining him i asked my husband to step down and i would handle it. Now where do i go from here no contact? Ive professed my love for him ive told him how i feel that im not perfect and only want the best for him.. it seems the only emotion he communicates is anger.. on top of that these "parents " in the home where he lives with his bf do their best to down grade me and keep him there ... They dont know me from jack... I even tried to explain to the mother where i was coming from and please close the door so he can come home and we can work on our relationship and his education .. to no avail she wants his money for rent there are three other late teens in the house who pay them to live there. My sons a finacial gain and a boy toy for her abusive son. I explained to her what my son told me about the abuse and others she didnt bat an eye .. but she was excited to talk about her dogs go figure... I know he needs to be on his own but because of his father passing my son is on a 16 year old level. Some tell me cut contact let him sink or swim others say keep the light on. I just cant take how it affects me everyday. Tell me im not alone and if i do cut the ties i have tried all i can even offering if he came back home to finish school i wouldnt bulk at him going back once he graduates and having contact with this boy while he finishes school. What is the right solution.. i cut him free i dont care in his eyes.. i dont and in his eyes im trying to control him....

popi We are Christians and wanted a Christian education for our kids. What I have found out though is that many of kids at this school put themselves on a "I am a better Christian than you are" pedestal and judge very harshly students that don't follow their lead. My son is more outside of the box. He skateboards instead of playing football. Listens to harder rock "Christian" music than most and is does more his own thing. We are far from wealthy and don't run with they parents who are and who have seats on the board or contribute extra money to the school. My older daughter had the same experience and she left the school. She told me that the kids that got up on stage and professed their love for and commitment to Christ were the meanest, most two faced and hardest partying kids at the school. She never fit in either. I have a concern of being able to get him to school when the weather is bad since I will have to be driving SD10 to school if he goes else where. The drive to the school that we have chosen, should he go, is about 20 minutes without snow or ice. That is something that we have to discuss. My DH says that he will find those types of people at the other school and not like it there either. I agree that he will find those types of people there but since the school is much larger he probably won't be with them the entire day nor will the mold that he is expected to fit into be so strict. I want to meet with the principal and see what they have available to address his learning disabilities. I need to speak to his special ed teacher at his current school and get her honest opinion about it. I emailed her today but have not heard back from her. I will also talk to the super at his current school and let him know why my son would be leaving and that he should take a hard look at what is being learned there about being a Christian as apposed to what is being taught. I think it's a shame.

Do not wait for anything to put the finish on Any outdoor project but good weather. I can not belive that wait for months thing is still being passed around. It was proven wrong at least 15 years ago. Ghessssssssssssssss. Dont take this wrong... With PT lumber it hardley matters the finish is for looks it wont keep that lumber from doing what pt lumber has to do exposed to the sun. J.

wow, Nina, you are a true inspiration to all of us who start and start and start and have a tough time finishing.

And...I just love that quilt. It looks so soft and comforting and I love the sentimental gesture of the fabric source!

What a wonderful UFO turned FO!

I love the colors, the design, etc...and the heart flower quilting is just fabulous.

It's interesting how our ideas & opinions of what we like (or have time to do) morph over time. I have pulled out old UFOs & then asked myself..."What was I thinking?!!"

16 years? Ya got me beat! I am so glad this quilt has been finished and now we can all enjoy it. (Especially you!) I find that I like the simple quilts best. They are restful and charming. Even though you "didn't know what you were doing" you were already skilled at picking out fabrics that went well together. How sweet that the quilt will always remind you of the baby dresses you made for your daughter.

I like the way you used your blocks with the white. Very pretty. What a wonderful way to enjoy your memories. I still use scraps from dresses that I made my daughters when they were litte. They are 55-53 years old now but when I see the fabric they are children again. Jayne

Wow well it sure turned out gorgeous!!!! And I think the "scrappy" appeal of the triangles coming together is what makes it better than just squares on point. W/out doing them scrappy like you did you're right -- those triangles would have been pointless!

ANYHOW -- it's absolutely stunning and that is so sweet that it was your DD's baby clothes fabric. The quilting looks great too.

Your quilt is very pretty and what a wonderful story. You need to be sure the story gets put on the label so your future generations will know about it. It is a great story about your learning more about quilting and also about how you tried and tried again until you came up with a special item. Is your DD like mine? She says "put my name on that; it is mine when you are gone." It is sort of a family joke because after my mother passed away we found a picture of me about age 6 that Mom had put a note on saying it was for my DD.
I think your quilt is very special as well as
pretty.

That is gorgeous! Isn't it funny though how differently we would do things with 16 years of experience behind us. The is a quilt that you will treasure for a long time.

Very nice! I might just put that pic in my someday pile! I have started cutting out one using the same block, but using scraps from the ol' scrap pile(s).

I love your quilt. It makes you just want to grab it up and hug it, it looks so soft and cuddly. I love the design and I love it that you just started it and was clueless and then made it into THAT!!!!!

This always puts me in mind of the story that if a bee knew it were aerodynamically impossible due to their body shape to fly, then they couldn't. But they didn't know, and they fly. My tumbling blocks quilt was started on an act of faith. I didn't know that was "supposed" to be a hard pattern. I didn't even use a pattern. I just figured it out on my own and cut my own templates. If I had known it was supposed to not be for people attempting their first real quilts, it would never have graced my mother's bed before she died.

I have you beat for UFO's btw. I started an embroidered animal block quilt for my son in 1967 and finished it for my grandson in 1992. That's what......twenty five years?

You did a beautiful job.
