Do you use templates? (looking for advice)

Hi,

I decided to play around with some fabric this morning instead of doing my 'must-do's. I made a little kite block from BH&G's 505 Blocks book. It came out okay but I'd like to try again in a more efficient way. I used freezer paper templates instead of making plastic ones from the pattern. But when I was all done, I realized that with the exception of one piece, all of the pieces were half square triangles, one rectangle and half rectangle triangles (if that makes sense). I would like to blow this up from a 4" block to at least a 6" block. Now I should be able to rotary cut what I need after I figure out the math, I think. Or does it make sense to make plastic templates? The one time I did try that they came out a little wobbly. I cut them out with scissors. Does anyone use an Xacto knife to do that?

I like this block but it is seeming so complicated to me right now.

I have used templates, but for those diamond shapes. I made them from cardboard using a utility knife to make the template.

They did the digital method to measure for our countertops, but they then produced a semi-transparent plastic template from those measurements. The templates were then taped on the slabs. I'm really glad they did it this way because I'm a visual person and we ended up moving the templates around - not in the kitchen because that stone is fairly uniform but in some of the other rooms. The granite folks had placed the templates to emphasize the movement in the stone, and we are 'less is more' kind of people so we often moved them to the quieter end or side of the slab. I'm sure they though we were nuts. The downside was that in transferring those digital measurements to the templates, they forgot to add 2 inches for the panel ends and overhang on the peninsula so it was too short. They didn't have a big enough piece left to do the entire peninsula again so they had to cut the existing piece and seam another piece in. I was bummed because the first piece looked so good and now the seam is in a place where the light will hit it just right and highlight the seam even though they did a great job on it. So that's where the fruit bowl is going.

Thanks for the information. I'm bumping this up because I would still like opinions on whether the seams in the soapstone that the company proposes make sense or whether there are better places to put the seams. Thanks!

In addition to making sure that your favorite stretch of slab is on display, the next thing you will want to know is where the seams will go and what they will look like. You have to be really careful with your fabricator as they make all the difference in the world. One of the guys who came to my house absolutely did not want to put in a full length piece of slab. I did not want the slab to be cut in multiple places and seamed and could not understand his insistence on not putting in a full length piece because there is plenty of space to get it in the door (in some places the lenghth is dependent upon what will fit in an elevator or staircase) it turned out that he did not want to hire yet another extra person to help carry it. So for his half hour of convenience I would have something that I would look at for many many years with some annoyance. Needless to say I did not go with that guy and it made me very aware that I needed to ask questions.

Sorry I didn't get the close up seam photos yesterday the contractor was here messing the kitchen up again installing the disposal, faucet, dishwasher. They ran into a couple snags that slowed them down so now we have a functioning sink but now DW yet... getting tired of contractor time as they were supposed to show up at noon and came at 3:30, so only worked for a few hours. Anyway... back to the countertops here are the close ups of the seams! This is the seam on the counter to the right of the range - you can see why it's hard to spot from more than inches away or at an angle, because they matched the colors and grain so well. It's only about 6" from the wall and we will likely have an appliance there such as MW or toaster etc anyway. And here is the seam to the left of range. The bottom photo there is a reflection of the drawer handle on the overhang, not a mark or flaw. Finally I did find (in the daylight) the repaired notch, it's up against the wall under the wall cabinet overhang so I didn't see it with room lights. We don't have under-cabinet lights since we only have a few uppers, we can add later if we want it. This will be easily disguised by countertop items in this area such as utensil jar or canisters. We're keeping counters clear for now since the backsplash goes in next week. Even if we'd bought a second slab we would have needed a seam to the left of the range since that was the largest slab available, and the quality of the seams and their placement is completely satisfactory to us - so a second slab would have spared us only the seam to the right of range near the wall. This fabrication was by Stoneman of San Francisco, in case anyone is looking for an excellent fabricator in the bay area!

Hi Kelly~

I've used a matt knife for cutting template plastic with no problems. An Xacto knite would be the same. Use a metal straight edge and be careful if you decide to try it.

If you can figure the math, rotary cutting would be a whole lot faster and easier I would think. I'm doing that now for a Storm-at-Sea design.

I would never use a template if I could do rotary cutting, but circles and diamonds--that's another story, as is the square template I used for marking sewing lines on the circles of the Peek-a-Boo I-Spy quilts I made.

I have made a template (out of freezer paper or template plastic) and then still rotary cut by laying my ruler over the template along the edge I was cutting. The templat helped me get the exact size and shape, but I still cut everything with my ruler/rotary cutter.

I did the same thing as laurainskca, using my long see through rotary ruler laid over the freezer paper. Was so simple...and way more accurate for me than cutting with scissors.

Thanks everybody!
I have found yet another project to do! (My son said, "What happened to all of those yo-yos you were making?"). I'm going to use my experimental kite block for a nametag for my guild meetings and quilt classes and then try some 6" blocks as time allows.

I do have to say that I am not at all unhappy that I 'took the day off' to play around with this. My schoolwork always gets done, one way or another, and it will this year as well.

I try to figure out if I can rotary-cut as much as possible, but if I do need a template, I use stiff cardboard if it's only a small amt. of pieces (as the edges of the cardboard don't hold up too long), or I do have some template plastic I've used occasionally. You could also use flat lids from plastic containers, and I think they'd be sturdier than the template plastic.
