Why dont you just paint the alarms the same color brown so they blend in?

I was going to recommend painting them as well. You can usually take off the covers, paint carefully around the bits that show, and paint the covers separately. It would be a shame to lose the terrific color story you have going on there.

One word of caution...think about disabling the smoke alarm while you are painting, and while it is setting up. Some alarms are sensitive to the fumes of paint, and if you are that close, you may get a rather fall-off-the-ladder jolt...

I have dealt with unsightly doorbells by building a simple box and face-frame from balsa, painting them to match the wall, and putting a double layer of copper screening in the frame. It was not gone, but it was not an eyesore any more. Probably not a good idea for a smoke alarm, as you don't want to impede the particles that make it warn you.

I love the brown! Paint the boxes.

I've painted those things in the past and not had any problem. Or, you could move them to the ceiling so they're off the wall. Anything that is hard-wired could easily be moved by an electrician if you're not handy.

Just chiming in to agree with what everyone else has said--paint them to match the wall--and that I love your colors. Your home is gorgeous!

I would defiently paint the boxes. I just have to say I love your hardwood floors. Your colors go so good together and I think any other would throw it off balance.

I agree. Paint the boxes to match the wall. The light color would stick out like a sore thumb in your house, IMO. I love the colors that you currently have in there.

Why did you ruin that beautiful wall by painting directly on it! never never no no no, always paint a scrap of wood or drywall and hold it up. Now you have to paint over the entire wall again. The mossy green color you have is perfect, all the colors on the walls play off each other beautifully. It's a gorgeous accent wall, please don't change that color! A bright white wall will ruin everything, talk about sticking out like a sore thumb, it will appear as if you haven't gotten around to painting the wall yet. Like others have said, simply paint the boxes. I did something similar with the furnace vents. I painted over those, wasn't easy with all the slats but it held up without a problem for years until I repainted the wall a new color. Just be sure to prime over the plastic or else the latex won't stick. If brushing on paint doesn't appeal to you there's also the option of finding a coordinating color in canned spray paint, they make special paint for plastic that doesn't require primer. That will make it go a lot faster.

BTW...The white paint looks like it's globbed on pretty heavy, if it's not to late try to remove as much as you can with a wet rag before it completely dries or the extra thick texture may show through when the wall is repainted.
Looking at the entire wall I can see areas that didn't cover, it's a little blotchy (lower left hand corner of the wall in the 3rd photo). How many coats did you put on the wall? From the photo it appears the wall needed another coat anyway. Deep colors frequently require more than 2 coats.

My smoke alarm and siren say "DO NOT PAINT" on them.

The doorbell is just a cover so it could be painted.

I like the dark color better too but maybe you could put a shelf just under the alarms etc. the length of the wall and put some tall objects in front of them. Have a dangling plant on the other end.

I see no reason why you can't paint the plastic smoke alarm box as long as you don't paint over the sensor. They just say that because there's always some yahoo who will paint over everything without thinking. It might void the warranty if there is a fire so it would be a good idea to check with your insurance company first. If it turns out you can't paint the smoke alarm box for that reason I'd still rather have that left as is than to paint the entire wall white and call even more attention to the wall. You can also add stick-up smoke alarms on the ceiling or nearby walls as a back-up. I've got them all over the house, behind every TV and the computer just to be safe. The odds of a fire starting in that hallway area are pretty slim don't you think?

I want to thank everyone for all your responses. I have already painted the wall back to the dark brown color since everyone agreed on the brown instead of the cream. I do plan on painting the doorbell cover but I am going to see if my husband can move the other two eyesores to the ceiling as charlieinnj suggested. I will wait and ask him after he cuts and installs all new trim for the whole downstairs first, otherwise he might kill me for adding more to his "honey do" list.

Just paint the boxes. Carefully -- with an almost dry brush -- and then wait for that coat to dry a bit -- and then do another coat. Worth the time and effort!

Yes, move the other two boxes. I had this done with a light switch and a thermostat that were both badly placed. Luckily, my husband is very handy and moved both of them to other walls and was able to patch the walls. You can't tell they were ever there.

I also painted my doorbell to match the wall color and it blends in reasonably well.
