Cacti and succulents out in the world: please share your photos!
So I thought it might be fun to have a thread where we could post photos of succulents that aren't ours. Whether in parks, gardens, homes or in the wild.
I know not everyone lives in places where succulents are that common outdoors, but if you do please share some photos so everyone can enjoy.
I often see plants that i think are interesting and lovely and maybe worth sharing, but are not really worth starting a new thread so now I'll post the pictures here.
First off, this variegated opuntia lives near a grocery store I go to sometimes. It's big, maybe 2 metres. I think it is opuntia monacantha variegata monstrose. Of course I have taken a few pads to grow : )

Kitty's and Blanca's look more similar, and Cindee's looks more like Larissa's... and yet, even that comparison has differences... a very interesting variety, to say the least! Now, I really must have one! Second in line on next year's wish list, with Jewel in the number one position! Next year should be very interesting... seeing them all bloom again! Does anyone else get the impression that the Hippeastrum world is evolving at grower level? Comments (6)I can only ID the last one positively, it’s a Portulacaria afra variegata. Please don’t grow any plants and especially a cacti or succ in a pot without any drainage holes, and it’s not advisable to keep those glass pebbles around them either, they won’t allow the mix to dry out properly. The soil mix they’re in looks very peaty and water retaining, ideally it needs changing else you will get problems with rotting as from what you have said you are new to plants. Please change all the soil and replant in a simple free draining mix of half good quality c/s mix and half sieved perlite or similar. All need placing in a very sunny spot and the Port a. will need slightly more water than the others. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoWow, thanks, great plants, folks. That Allauadia is lovely, it's a plant I wasn't aware of until you posted it, Crenda. Now I want to visit the ' Madagascar spiny forests'. And, very cool that you have such lovely cacti and succulents in public places.
Hoovb, that is an awesome cactus. I'd love something, anything, crested.
Chuckerfly, it is so tall! Well done for getting such a good photo from a moving vehicle. Actually it looks like it could be the same cactus that grows in a garden that I sometimes walk by, I think it is the tallest cactus I have ever seen in person. Unfortunately the plant is a little too far from the footpath to get a decent photo, at least with my equipment (ie my tablet). I am hoping one day the residents will be in the yard when i walk by and I will ask them if I can take some photos from in their garden. Anyway here is a bad photo of the very tall cactus, it's in the centre:

In this photo you can zoom in and see a smaller cactus of the same type above the shrub near the centre, it looks very similar to your cactus, Chuckerfly. Lucky cactus has ocean views : )

The only photo I have on my phone at present is from Trois Rivieres, Quebec when we were there for a concert (staying in Montreal for Jazz Fest but our host took us on a road trip!)
Just plain ‘ol Echeveria PVN in this tree well, but I was enchanted nonetheless :)

5 years agoBunkfree, those PvNs look neat! It's one of my favorite Echeveria, but mine seems very prone to mealies infestation, never look so good... :(

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoHaving slipped and fallen on them many times while rock hunting out there ... I call them the “ouchy kind” hahahah! I suspect these are polycantha. There’s also some smaller rounder types (not pictured) with more coral-coloured flowers that may be fragilis. My mom picked a flower and brought it to me, and it rooted!

5 years agoOh no, they would be very bad to fall on! Just this week I had to remove a couple of 'splinters' from my fingers that I think were glochids that were really tiny, so I didn't notice them for some time until they got very sore and inflamed.
What sort of rock collecting do you do??
Here is a patch of kalanchoe fedtschenkoi near me. In flower in a rather neglected garden, It's looking very pink due to winter and drought.

5 years agoSaw some Euphorbia milii earlier today. It's a shame about the trash, but it's on a commercial area where no one seems to care for it. A lot of these are used as hedges near my apartment building, but I've never seen one grows flattened like that.
