Photo Essay 1: Huntington Botanical Gardens (several pics)

We visited The Huntington (library, art collections, and botanical gardens) last Saturday.

I decided to experiment with my old camera since my new one isn't living up to my expectations. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.

I'll post two or three groups of photos taken at the gardens in the next few days. Here is the first. They were taken in a cactus hot house.

I don't know what kind of camera you used but it made great photographs. Thanks for sharing. The first one is spectacular.

Thanks, Yardvaark. That is a good system for when you're home, and is merited if you have a big plant investment (whether in big plants or lots of small ones). And what a coincidence - I've actually been looking for something just like that to help catch someone stealing my newspaper quite regularly, but had only seen the more expensive version I've linked below. Maybe this one has a longer range, but with a 20' front yard, I don't need it :-) Currently I have a webcam set up which works for images but not for intercepting, should I wish to do so. Anyway, I have no quibble with the merit of the plant information in what you propose. But tied to addresses... shouldn't happen. It may, but it shouldn't. There are so many downsides. Imagine you buy a house with a huge whatever that is revered all over the world, and you want to remove it to do something else. The Occupy movement might come to your front yard! Drtygrl... there's an idea for my new screen name... "silver_lining" I've hated the one I have ever since Garden Web eliminated capital letters and it looks like I've put a #1 after my name, necessitating the correction of a signature :-) Someday I'll change it but the longer I stick with this one, the harder it gets! Big Bugs exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden

Glad you enjoyed the exhibit. Membership at the garden is really reasonably priced when you consider you can go as many times a year as you'd like, and you get 10% off purchases at the gift store, plus a couple of admissions passes, not to mention all of the great events. Calif botanical gardens & parks in February?

In the Bay Area... I second the UC Botanical Garden. (I'm a member, it is a gem.) Nearby you can visit our beautiful Redwood Regional park. Walk the French Trail & the Chown Trail for a good workout among huge trees and an amazing stream. Wear your hiking boots, it can be muddy in February. Along Skyline Boulevard, between the Botanical Garden and Redwood Park is a place called Huckleberry Nature Preserve. It is a beautiful, mostly flat mile or so long trail that has an interpretive guide. In San Francisco, you could have a great time walking through Golden Gate Park and Crissy Field. Strybring Arboretum is fabulous, and there is a living roof on the new science museum that is pretty cool. Walk up the hill from Crissy Field to Pacific Heights and enjoy the mansion gardens. (Hint, there is not a weed or fallen leaf for blocks and blocks.) Sonoma Horticultural Nursery is a great place to visit, even if you don't want to buy anything. Their grounds are fabulous-acres and acres- and some of their rhodos will be in bloom by then. There is a demonstration garden outside Sonoma called Crossroads (I think.) Hi Basic, "The tag says its a native to N. India. I recall reading somewhere that India only has one native conifer--would this be it?" Nope, the quote isn't correct, it should be "only has one native conifer south of the Ganges River", and the answer is Nageia wallichiana (Podocarpaceae), which occurs in the Western Ghats in southwest India (and also in Burma, Thailand, etc., so it isn't endemic). The Himalaya (i.e., north of the Ganges) has plenty of conifers (6 pines, 2 spruces, 2 or 3 larches, 3 or 4 firs, a cedar, a hemlock, 2 cypresses, several junipers, a yew, an Amentotaxus, and probably some others I've forgotten of off-hand - at least 25 species). The technical point of the quote is that the Indian Tectonic Plate lost all of its conifers a fair few million years ago when it drifted across the South Pole, long before it collided into the Asian continent (to create the Himalaya). That Nageia wallichiana isn't endemic there shows that it is a recent colonist (within the last few million years), presumably by migrating birds with the seeds in their guts. Resin

The cactus gardens at The Huntington look like an alien world. I sure wish I could get to The Huntington more often, there is so much to see and do.

Interesting cacti! Nice pictures too. My new camera doesn't make me happy either - too many shots come out blurry and the screen is too small for me to tell until I print them out.

Beautiful photos, but some of those things are downright scary looking (like the bottom left one).

What is your "old" camera, and what's your "new" camera. What don't you like about the new one?

Lindsey, both my old and new cameras are Olympus. The old one is a 10x zoom and the new is an 18x zoom.

The old camera had better depth and clarity. Photos from the new camera don't have the wow factor that the old has.

I look at photos of my recent trip to Alaska taken with the new camera and they are flat and blurry looking to me. I have been blaming it on the cold but then I remembered that the photos I took in Antarctica with the old camera were in a very cold environment as well and took stunning photos.

I dropped my old camera a couple years ago and the battery cover broke. That I fixed with duct tape but I think it messed up the zoom a little as well.
