Plantation shutter questions? Please help...

We decided to buy 3 1/2 inch plantation shuttes for the front windows of our house. They are insanely expensive, since we have 2 large asched windows, we have to go real wood.

To cut costs the sales associate suggested we do the woodlore shutters on the other rectangular windows by our front door. We have a nice substantial wood door at the front. Does the faux wood Norman Woodlore shutters look like plastic? Or can you not even tell unless you scrutinize the shutters like the sales associate said?

Finally we are getting them outside mounted. I linked a picture of some shutters are these outside mounted or inside? I can't tell but I know nothing about shutters.

I'm not absolutely for sure, but I believe those are outside mounted. To me, that means that they have a frame that fits inside the window opening, so that type will have a "framed casing" effect. I'm not entirely sure what inside mounted shutters like like. I'm assuming with that kind you'd have to have your window completely cased with framing already.

FWIW, my windows (I think I posted a pic for you before) were installed with just the sill framed with wood. Then the shutters are "self-framing" so that they just slide into the opening and are nailed into place.

Thanks, that explains the insidee/outside mount thing. Our windows dont have trim so now I know I do want the outside mount.

Great question, actually, and one I asked here myself not long ago. I think the shutters will look better if they match your woodwoork. We're going with Shutter Classic for our shutters. Thanks Jane. The doors are really tall and wide, wider and taller than standard sizes but I'm sure that the size of french doors can be customized. I'm not sure if they would look too large though - especially compared to my front door???? I could probably do something like this though - with windows on the side...now I have something to think about! :) Or maybe I'll just save us money by getting new curtains! My husband's going to kill me! LOL I always have so many ideas that usually turn into us spending more money than planned!

Yes, plantation shutters afford maximum privacy. When all the shutters are closed there is no possibility of anyone seeing in. As an added bonus, they also help keep strong sun at bay when they're closed, but consequently the wood shutters can warp. Our last three homes have had plantation shutters and I find them a bit austere, so have added some curtains in selected rooms. They present a nice, uniform appearance from the exterior of your home, though, and in many markets they add to the appraised value of your home.

Hi deborah :-) I've had them 3 years, since we built the house. One reason I got the wider (3 1/2 inch) slats was to let in more light. That was one of my concerns but when they're open the light streams in and the view out is still great. I also got the design where the upper and lower is closed and opened independently so the top can be open for light and the bottom closed for privacy if I choose. Since I have them on all the windows I wanted a simpler look. I also like the traditional smaller slats with bifolds but I think it would've been way too much on large triple and double windows. I have no regrets about the style I chose. I considered blinds for my upstairs but I knew once I had the shutters I would be spoiled and want those so I just plunged in and did all the windows. I definitely think they help insulate. Now when you close them, there goes the light but during times when we're not home and all through the night mine stay closed for insulation if the weather is hot or cold out. In nice weather I just leave them open sometimes. They definitely aren't cheap but I rationalized because the only window I do a wt on is the breakfast area where I got the cafe height shutters. So no drapes/curtains to change out, wash, dust, etc. It's definitely for me! I had wanted them for years.

I have Norman Woodlore and they are a wood composite. They don't look 'faux'(they're painted white, not stained.)

Will your different material shutters be in the same area? If so, I'm afraid that you will see the difference.

Ours are inside mount (Z frame) the outside trim pieces are part of the package.

Okay, I'm a big liar...I misspoke when I said that my shutters "slide" into place. They are supported by a thick frame that is nailed to the perimeter of the windows. Sorry, I should have looked before I spoke!

I saw two Norman shutters side by side, one composite and one real wood. Both were painted in silk white. I couldnÂt see the difference. I had to ask the showroom assistant which was which. The only way I was able to differentiate between the two was opening and closing the louvers. If you pick up samples of shutter panels, you will notice that real wood is lighter in weight and the louvers feels different when opening and closing them. The only reason why I didnÂt go for the composite was that the colors offered didnÂt match my doors and trim. Perhaps IÂm being too picky. There may be an more of a visual difference between real wood and other synthetc brands. IÂm just speaking of Norman shutters. About the picture. I canÂt tell what mount that is. Sorry.

Thanks Melanie. I just put our order in for them. I am crossing my fingers they will look as great as the ones I see here. I had to get a pretty substantial trim that doeasn't quite match the trim in my house.
