Thanks sewwhatsnew! The shutters were made locally. Seems in this area (West Tennessee) the custom ones are about the same price as the big name makers so we went with them. They color matched my trim paint which is Vanilla Bean, a Farrell Calhoun color (a Duron color). It's a very creamy white. They are outside mount. They left the window frames and the shutter frame is mounted about halfway across the window frame. The shutter frame is routed, it's not just a flat board so it looks like a continuation of the window frame. It has the same grooves and curves in the wood, it's not just a flat box. I'll attach a closeup so you can see this better. All three shutters on the triple window are the same size. If I can help you any with more pics just let me know. Hope this helps. Mimi, I also like your shutters! I am trying to decide about getting shutters, and have started several threads myself. Thanks for posting the picture-they are so helpful. How long have you had them, and do you think they help insulate? My only concern, other than cost, is that they will block light too much. If I don't get shutters I will get plantation blinds. Decisions, decisions!

Hi deborah :-) I've had them 3 years, since we built the house. One reason I got the wider (3 1/2 inch) slats was to let in more light. That was one of my concerns but when they're open the light streams in and the view out is still great. I also got the design where the upper and lower is closed and opened independently so the top can be open for light and the bottom closed for privacy if I choose. Since I have them on all the windows I wanted a simpler look. I also like the traditional smaller slats with bifolds but I think it would've been way too much on large triple and double windows. I have no regrets about the style I chose. I considered blinds for my upstairs but I knew once I had the shutters I would be spoiled and want those so I just plunged in and did all the windows. I definitely think they help insulate. Now when you close them, there goes the light but during times when we're not home and all through the night mine stay closed for insulation if the weather is hot or cold out. In nice weather I just leave them open sometimes. They definitely aren't cheap but I rationalized because the only window I do a wt on is the breakfast area where I got the cafe height shutters. So no drapes/curtains to change out, wash, dust, etc. It's definitely for me! I had wanted them for years.

Thanks for the info. Mimi! I have always thought I wanted shutters also, but now that I can, I can't seem to make up my mind. I guess because it seems so "final" a decision. However, I keep things forever and wouldn't likely even want to change them, so... I do love the look. So classic and timeless. We have been concerned with blocking too much light. I would get the ones that the top and bottom louvers can be opened independently. Are yours like this or are they double hung? I got a very reasonable quote from the Louver Shop, less than $200 a window. The thought of having to pick out drapes or any other window treatments for all the windows makes me tired! Thanks for the info. especially about shutters helping insulate. That is a big plus for me!

deborah1950, My louvers open independently at the top and bottom but they are not double hung. They are all one piece with a wider board running across the middle where the double hung window lock is. All this was an option but that's what I chose. Some of the details I had to think about but not the shutters themselves. When we built I said I wanted a house with a wide front porch with columns, dormers, and plantation shutters - so they were part of the grand plan :-) Here's another pic where you can see they are one piece.

Mimi, that's the pic I fell in love with, thanks for posting it. I've been pricing shutters this week, and considering Normandy and Sussex both by Norman Shutters or Graber Traditions shutters. Sussex and Graber are both all basswood and comparable in price. Normandy is basswood and other hardwoods, and a couple hundred cheaper. Does anyone on the forum have these??
Need to talk to my sales rep and check sample colors, I think silk white works from Norman, and Swiss Coffee from Graber so I doubt I'll custom match to my BM Dove White.

sewwhatsnew, I can see why my living room window reminded you of your window. I think it will look great with shutters and still let in a lot of light. Love the floors and wall color in that room. A fireplace and a rug will cozy it up and make it a beautiful room.

Sorry I can't help you with those brands since mine are custom. I do know they're made of basswood though. Keep those pictures you just posted so one of these days we can see the before and after shots!!
