New GE Cafe full depth fridg (&DW) vs.

HI all, I posted a question on the appliance forum early March that never got a response, so I'm trying one here, based on new info, TIA.

Local scratch & dent (S&D) place carries the GE Cafe series (they also order new, so I can get it all at the same place either way). I have a deposit on a GE Cafe range. It will be the only appliance on the short wall of our L shape kitchen. There is a brand new GE Cafe full depth fridg just coming out ($2299 - not S&D). GE Cafe DW ($800 S&D). Fridge & DW will only be separated by an 18" cabinet along the long wall of the L. GE Cafe hood is $650 (not S&D). If 4 appliances are bought, there is currently a $500 rebate, but that is being doubled, so I would actually save $1000 on the cafe series.

However, from what I've read, GE fridg's are ok, DW's not so much. Do you think the cafe series is any better in that regard?

If I don't get the GE package, I will still get the range. I would get the zephyr hood ($550) & Samsung 29 cu ft fridg ($1800). DW is trickier - would probably have to pick a model w/o a handle if not same brand as fridg - Miele would be approx. $1200.

Any trust for the GE Cafe series as a whole? The package would come out to at least $800 less than the separate brand appliances above, which is a lot of money to us (would be like getting the DW free). However, if there is a consensus not to trust the Cafe DW in particular, I know it would be better to get individual appliances to last that may save $ & aggrevation in the long run.

We had a repairman once tell us that he would never buy GE products because he has to repair them so often. Now we had Profile models and not Cafe. I know that the Cafe series is supposed to be a higher end, but his words still resonate with me. In ten years the electrical board on the double ovens had to be totally replaced twice along with several other repairs made on it. The refrigerator only had minor repairs such as the ice maker which stopped working and the dishwasher quit working altogether. (We replaced it with a Bosch, which I didn't like for other reasons.) The only GE appliance we had that we never had problems with was the gas cooktop. Ironically it was just a plain lower end model GE and not Profile or anything fancy. YMMV

Thanks for your feedback ncamy. I thought I read on here a few times that their cooking appliances were rated well overall- getting more confused.

Maggie, nine years ago I bought the totally untested Thermador Freedom Series Columns. I picked them over the SubZero because they were the first to lift the interior and get rid of the ventilation panel overhead -- something I really hated about the old built-ins, but it also meant the bottom drawer wasn't nearly on the ground and in the freezer the ice was at a convenient height (had two kids in marching band -- we went through at least 2-3 gallons of ice every day during marcing season. Nine trouble free years later, I have no hesitation recommending Thermador (which includes Bosch, Miele and Gaggenau). And I got one of the first ones -- before the bugs were worked out. SubZero is the other top name for full size built in refrigeration with KA being a not to distant 2nd (but chek the opening of the drawers - required a more than 90 deggree open door back then - don't know if it's better now). For undercounter, it's SubZero, Perlick and maybe Uline.

I just bought and installed the KitchenAid counter depth french door fridge. Not the supersized one. I chose it for a couple of reasons bur primarily because it was one of the few I could get without a water dispenser in the front door (though there is a discreet one inside the fridge). I hated the fact that the counter depth added about a $1000 to the price tag and worried that I would not feel the aesthetic advantage justified that price difference once I got it since I was trying to be very frugal in my purchases. I was so wrong. I am crazy about this fridge. The bottom freezer holds everything my old full depth freezer did except I can see it all so easy in the lighted space with 3 slide out layers. I can see everything I have when I open the french doors. Nothing hard to get at. Nothing out of sight. The door shelves hold tons of stuff too. I like that the sides are gray....not black...so if some of the side had to show it would blend fairly well with the stainless. Mine will not show as there will be a full panel of cabinet wood covering both sides (cabinets arrive in 2 wks). I'm having an open shelf/cubby above it to hold cookbooks. Buy this unit with confidence.

Noniwilli - Hopefully I can help shed a little light for you. We'll start with the Electrolux lines. A few years back Electrolux Corp bought the Frigidaire line, giving them a large stake in the U.S. appliance market. Four or so years ago they launched a 'super premium' line - Electrolux Icon. They tried to line it up to compete against Wolf/Subzero, Monogram, Dacor, DCS, Thermador, etc. Last year Electrolux Corp launched their Electrolux line which is meant to compete against Kitchenaid, Profile, Bosch, etc (your premium lines). Now, if you ask me, the Electrolux lineup is superior to the Icon line (mostly due to the fact that it was launched a few years after the Icon line) for now (the Icon line is supposed to be revamped sometime soon). Now, onto GE Cafe vs Electrolux. To start out I've got to say you can't go wrong with either one, it's more of what is important to you. The Electrolux has a nicer rack system, but they are not self clean racks like you find in the Cafe (you can leave them in during self clean cycles). The Electrolux has the hidden bake element while the Cafe has the exposed element. There is a positive and negative side either way you go. If you've got a hidden element, you have to heat the little compartment the element is concealed in before your main oven compartment is heated, but cleaning is a lot easier. The Cafe is the opposite - you heat the oven compartment immediately, but cleaning is a little more tedious. They both have meat probes, which is a feature I use on my oven a bit. The Cafe has five burners up top and the Electrolux only has 4. They both have the second oven at the bottom. The Cafe is a freestanding range (doesn't lip over the countertops and pushes back against the wall) and the Electrolux is a slide-in range (lips over the countertop). Cafe is a grey/black interior while the Electrolux is blue. And of course, the Electrolux has those amazing easy-glide, full extension racks. Hope this helps. A couple of things to keep in mind with today's refrigerators. You can expect them to last, on average about 8 to 10 years before they need to be replaced. Another interesting fact is that today's modern refrigerators don't operate below 50 degrees F. That means no more garage refrigerators. I'm shopping for new appliance now because I'm remodeling my kitchen. My old refrigerator is in pristine condition and works perfectly. But it's white and would look out of place in my new kitchen. Having said that, I'm seriously considering having the doors powder coated or spray painted at an auto body shop to a new color. Except for energy efficienty, everything about my refrigerator is superior to what's being sold today. And even on the energy efficiency front, it will only consume about $15 more dollars per YEAR than a newer model. My recommendation would be to stay with GE, Whirlpool, or Frigidaire simply because they have better parts and servicing across the US. Samsung and LG parts and service can vary wildly depending upon where you live. Since the expected life of a refrigerator is so low, I'd say by the least expensive model that's meets you needs and pass on the expensive bells and whistles. It might also make economic sense in some cases to fork over the 7K+ for a built in refrigerator that will have a serviceable life of 20+ years. You could easily spend that amount replacing and servicing standalone refrigerators in that same 20+ years window.

I have a basic GE dishwasher that has been working fine for 2.5 years. My neighbor has the cafe dw and range. They like the range, although 2 of its knobs have broken off since it was purchased 2 years ago. Its my second choice, mainly because Ive seen too many at showrooms that look beat up - scratches and dents on the stainless top. The cafe DW has been fine for them. The micro has been terrible...definitely stay away from it.

I have the GE cafe fridge and range but not the DW. I've only had them about 6 months but I've had GE fridges for years and never had a problem with them. So far I like the range.
We've had BOSCH DW for years and so just bought another one during the reno. Like them because they're so quite.

Thanks designnov & blfenton. Sounds like there's some satisfaction out there with these appliances (we don't need a new microwave). When I tried to search the appliances forum, there didn't seem to be that many posts about the Cafe series. Wasn't sure how to interpret that -if not many folks consider it, etc.

"Quite" should read "quiet". (My NHL hockey team is in the fight of its' playoff life so I'm a little on edge and not paying attention like I should. But I don;t have the nerves to be watching the game so I'm hiding out here)
