It's October, how is your build coming along?
Comments (40)cursivesailor my friend, you must be certifiably CRAZY! LOL. Actually, I've sometimes advised young couples thinking of getting married to first do a BIG project together where neither one of them is an expert and where they had no choice but to negotiate decisions in order to finish the project. Before we got married - we'll celebrate our 29th anniversary in 2 months - my DH and I decided to reupholster a heavy old sofa-bed we bought at a garage sale for $30 which would then become our first piece of real furniture. We took an upholstery class offered thru the adult ed center at a local college and the instructor guided us but even so, by the time we got that sofa recovered (less than a month before our wedding), I had learned more about DH than I had learned in the 7 years we had known each other. Among other things, about the 5th time I accidentally hammered the poor man's thumb and he didn't even cuss at me, I absolutely KNEW I had found a man who would never ever strike me no matter what the provocation. Seriously, we really learned to work as a team while working on that old sofa and we learned to negotiate our differences of opinion without attacking each other --- which has been a darn necessary skill to have during this #@@&+!~# house build! When the stress gets to you, do come here to this forum to blow it off rather than blowing up at your sweetie. I do wish you all the best and, when you're ready to kill your fiance, remember that if your relationship can survive building a house together, it'll survive whatever else life can ever throw at you! By the way, would you believe we still have that same sofa in our living room? The upholstery is getting a bit tattered so it is going to be relegated to the game room in our new home. Neither of us can quite bear to part with it but neither do we have any desire whatsoever to reupholster it again. LOL!...See MoreIt's October 2013 How is your build going?
Comments (150)Went out to our build site today, and an alligator was sunning on the bank of the pond. I knew we had one, but I hadn't seen him yet. I'm from northern Michigan, so spanish moss and alligators are quite an adjustment. We have concrete in our trenches now and they're getting ready to set the block on the rebar. I can't wait to see framing go up. MFatt, I celebrate your hole with you! Jujubean, gorgeous setting! I admire all of you doing your own GCing. We have been living on a boat for 4 years, so we're not from this area, don't know the in's and out's and where to go to get stuff - for a variety of reasons I'm really more comfortable going with a builder. I'm really happy with the one we've chosen. But being with a builder means that I've been obsessing over getting all my selections made since June, because he wanted almost everything decided on before he broke ground. With very few exceptions everything is chosen and costed out. We need to buy our appliances before the end of the year in order to take advantage of the promo dishwasher package. So now I'm starting in on choosing and obsessing over the interior choices. Because we sold our house and moved to the boat 4 years ago, and have sailed +/- 8000 nm since then, we got rid of most of what we own. What we did keep is in storage, and all of the upholstery pieces I kept need reupholstering. I'm going from a very northern design sensibility with rich deep colors and patterns to a low country lighter palette. I really look forward to watching everyone go through the process and choose all of your materials and appointments. Autumn4, I'm hoping all goes smoothly and within budget from here on out. good luck...See MoreAbout to start new build...
Comments (8)Intermatic's system is fairly basic. They don't make additional pool equipment such as pumps, filters, etc... like the other manufacturers, the extended warranties the system builders offer, the tighter, built-in integration, make the Intermatic system sort of a odd man out. For those augmenting existing systems with only basic needs, the Intermatic system seems to have a better shot at winning some business. The Phantom is fascinating to watch in action. AFAIK, it is still the only sweep that skims also. However, when skimming, the jet that propels it will knock items down to the floor that are on either side and behind the unit. I prefer to see a sweep stay on the floor and let the pool's skimmer(s) do the skimming. It does have a lot of parts inside and is not always easy to repair. The hose uses small sections of flexible tubing between hard sections of pipe. The constant flexing in the same place is problematic. Eventually, the flexing will take it's toll and that section will need replacing due to leaks, cracking, tears, etc... Scott...See MoreDavid Pool build: Almost Done! (used to be our pool build)
Comments (52)Hi gang: Well I have been out of town for a few days and believe it or not between the rain and being out of town, I have yet to take my first swim. The kids on the other hand have to be extracted with great force at the end of the day. My sons party went as planned, one short rain shower, but otherwise great. The water is now fairly balanced, they started the polaris (thank goodness..the dust was insane!), they plan on starting up the salt system in about a week. birdbath, I see you have been absent also....must be living in that water....thank you for the compliment, but yours is still the coolest pool I have ever seen. Moo....thanks....we are planning to build up the area behind the waterfall, make it into a berm with plantings and lots of color. We are also going to use river stones in that area....and behind that will be the completed extension of the wall. Should be starting that in the next 2-3 weeks. Smb....agreed our colors do look alike, it still amazes me how it changes throughout the day. I think we ended up somewhere between midnight blue and tahoe blue. Thank you, love yours also...are you getting to swim or does it still belong exclusively to the puppy ;) Well, I have the weekend off...so I think today will be first swim...its 89 out there and the water has warmed up to about 82....here are the pics in full sunlight for Birdbath. oops...heres the waterfall on.......See Moreleonardsmalls
