It's June 2013--how's your build progressing?
Comments (12)Well, I never thought this day would come. I am actually posting about our progress in building our dream house. We have been busy clearing the site and preparing for the dig to begin. Last week we had 4.5" of rain in two days. I'm really glad we hadn't dug it in yet. We managed to locate a custom sawmill who agreed to cut up the red oaks we harvested from our site. We are having them cut into hardwood flooring. Once the sawyer is done we then need to have them trucked to the mill for kiln drying, planning, sanding, and milling. The whole process is supposed to take a little less than 4 months. Our contractor told us he'd never had anyone do this before, but the timeframe was acceptable and he gave us his blessing to continue. Here is the picture of some of the trees on the way to the sawmill... We had a total of 15 logs, all 10.5' long and anywhere from 30" to 16" in diameter. I'm not sure how many board feet we'll have... care to guess???? Here they are on the road. Take my word for it, that is a truckload of hard work right there... More later... stay tuned. Comments (150)Today they started to put the forms up for the basement walls. They'll finish tomorrow and pour the concrete Wednesday. We will have 9 foot walls, 8 inches thick. We were surprised to see that they had already dug the hole for the septic tank and put it in! Comments (150)akshars-love those pics. What kind of flooring are you doing-have you already chosen it? I have read also about good quality and bad quality in both particle board and plywood. There is so much information out there that you don't even know exists until you have to start shopping for it. So - I can related to the can't really talk to my friends comment as well. All of my friends that have built somewhat recently went the custom route so yet again all pywood...I didn't have anyone's to look at to compare. A catalog and pictures just aren't enough to go from and many of the displays I saw were you guessed it - upgraded to plywood or the lower end that weren't great quality anyhow. It's frustrating and overwhelming. My mind tells me MDF would be okay but there is the nag of well what if it isn't and you spent all of this money on an unknown because we have no personal experience with it. Not helpful but that was my thought process. Good luck....See MoreIt's December 2013, how is your build? Part 2
Comments (84)We have a full house today! Drywall guys started at 7:00 am. The main guy is out sick. One just came back from being off sick and another told me he felt sick. Yikes! And it's cold inside the house. With all the insulation it's keeping the cold in! As soon as they are ready to tape up the drywall we'll turn on the portable electric heater DH has wired up to our temporary electric. The electrician told him what to do. We were waiting until they put the drywall up for ceilings first before turning it on. And we have a delay on the garage doors. It's been cold, too. Here's the heater we are using. We'll be using it until our geothermal is installed. Our stone guys came, too, this morning. They've decided to go ahead and install the wainscoting now in addition to the chimney. So they've been busy all morning installing some weather flashing we asked they use. While we were talking with the stone guy, we decided to add stone along the whole side of the garage. Here he is measuring for it. ChaChing! And, the insulation guys came back today to spray in the crawl space. Can't wait to see the house with drywall. I went down there early and peeked in but forgot to take pics. They had the ceilings in two bedrooms and hall bath up. Hopefully I can see the place late this afternoon. DH found a very large dent in the chimney flue connectors yesterday when he was running speaker wire. He wants to get that fixed before they drywall the fireplace surround. He couldn't get ahold of them by phone so he drove there and they are closed today and tomorrow. Geesh! And one of the drywall guys just drove up to my daughters looking for DH. They need a 1x6 installed along a certain wall that connects to our pocket door of the master closet. He said the framers forgot to install it. I called DH and he was down by Lowes so he would get one. I am glad we can clear up these things as we find them and not wait days in-between. Happy New Year, Everyone!...See Moreautumn.4
