LOVE the curves you worked into it! Did you use a pattern or do the math?

It reminds me of the shoreline, with wave after little wave lapping gently on the sand. Lovely.

Very pretty!! I have been storing material to use in a bargello.
I think it is also a good way to use up 'what was I thinking' material.

I recognize some the batiks that I have used in your quilt! This is beautiful! I have done a bargello recently, but it is not anywhere close to this.

I do have to mention - and I may start another thread on this issue, b/c I wonder if anyone else has had this problem... The jelly roll I had the strips were varying sizes... it SAID 2 1/2" but...

Has anyone else run into issues like this with Jelly Rolls???

Well I take your point about the uneven & crooked pieces, but thank G_d neither of those is visible in your quilt.

That is one amazingly beautiful quilt! Personally, I have never been a fan of Bargello, this quilt makes me think I should think again.

It is fabulous! I have never bought the jelly rolls, but I was thinking about it - the crooked cutting and inaccurate sizes are unacceptable, unless that is how they all are. I can cut inaccurately on my own - don't need to pay extra for it!
I am interested what others that purchase these have to say about it.
What pattern did you use for your quilt top? Great border selection - very, very pretty. This is making me want to make one.

Ok, answering questions about the bargello.

I did it just to do it... I like the pattern and wanted to do one for posterity. The pattern really grabbed me. A friend has a ton of quilt books and I saw it a while ago and wanted to do one. While looking up some animal print patterns/quilts someone suggested a bargello and I was renewed with trying one out. So, I had a pattern; the curve was different, but you can curve the colors anyway you like. In fact the book I have is very intimidating with amazing wall hangings and quilts, but I stuck with simple... I liked the wave look.

So in wanting to do one quick/easy just for the sake of doing one; I did buy 2 jelly rolls. I needed 10 different colors and 8 strips of each color. The jelly roll provided it with a few little exceptions (but its not too too noticeable) blue instead of purple - but I was able to successfully fudge it.

The pattern was easy - putting it together was easy EXCEPT having to try and deal with the mess of the uneven strips! They made the easy project difficult! I was either trying to compensate or cut off uneven and not straight strips or I was tossing them into a pile of unusable strips! Then I had to go back and try and find the least curvy/uneven strip! This was compounded when I was trying to sew the cross cut strips together b/c the strips weren't exactly 2" (sewed). So lesson learned here cut my own strips!

Quit size is roughly 88" (width of 2 44" WOFs) by 80" (10 fabric types X 4 fabrics at 2¡¨). That make sense?

Just another plug the pattern was EASY and putting it together was EASY but like any quilt the measuring & cutting has to be exact (I took this for granted with my jelly rolls) but it's a great pattern! It looks so complicated, but it was really simple and I think it looks more painstakingly done b/c the largest square is 2X2 inches (smallest on this one being 2"X1/2").

I'm drawn to the patterns that when you have it together it has a bigger pattern - make sense?? (for instance I like a log cabin put together as a barn raising not open windows.)

I would do this pattern again I really liked it and I thought (even though it¡¦s far from perfect) it LOOKS like it is!

Would you share the name of the book? You are lucky to have a friend who quilts (other then these wonderful cyber friends of course!). Again, it looks beautiful!

My friend is a master of bargello but I remain intimidated! Your quilt is very beautiful and I love the curvy effect. I would be interested to try one you say is easy. Can you provide a pattern name or book?

I have never purchased a jelly roll. What you received is unacceptable and you should send the pics you posted to where you bought the jelly rolls. I thought these were laser cut! You paid good money and you have a good reason to complain.

You have actually gotten me interested in bargello. (Like Pirate Girl, I was never a fan.) Your quilt is fascinating and lovely, and I like the idea that bargello helps use up a lot of diverse fabrics. I can see that I might be able to hide some fabrics I don't like in there and the finished product would not be hurt by their ugliness!

I love that top, and I think I may have to explore the bargello method.

I understand your frustration with the precut fabrics. I recently made a quilt with charm packs, and, yes - they were a complete PITA to deal with. Never again, not for me!

I used charm packs for a particular quilt for a particular person. The colors were nothing I would choose for myself, and I didn't want a bunch of fabric hanging around that I didn't particularly like.

I was making half-square triangle pieces - more that 400 as I recall - but the charm squares were so variable that I ended up trimming down every single half-square unit.

I could have marked, sewn, and trimmed yardage much more quickly. Never again! Maybe some companies are more accurate in their cutting than others, but I will trust my own skills from now on. I'm fussy, and if I buy a precut 5" square, I expect it to be 5", not 4-7/8", or 5-1/8".

I am very lucky to have someone that shares their books. And she has been quilting for decades so sheÂs collected a gamut. IÂve been quilting for 8 months and I have a stack of quilting books already!

IÂve attached the link to the book I used (I noticed the comments were pretty positive in the critique section). I have to say, there is no pattern for what I did in there  but youÂll see that bargello is very versatile and what I did was quite easy. You could use up tons of odd/ugly fabrics. I could have used 40 different fabrics as long as you have 2 44" strips that are 21/2" in width of each fabric. If you look the blue and white fabrics were not the same  but close enough (there were only 4 strips of the blue/white fabrics  same with some of the othersÂ)

My bargello does not do the ones in this book justice ItÂs a great book with lots of ideas and amazing bargellos  thereÂs a wall hanging in there that is sublime  it looks like ribbon (it has 2 different color runs highlighted in black). But I just did a very simple one  IÂm telling you folks, if you can sew a strip of fabric to another you can do a bargello. I should mention that I did this quilt top in about 2 sittings  and I am a slow sewer with a lousy machine. ItÂs more that doable, itÂs pretty easy  just have to get your mind around it.

The thing with the Jelly Roll is that you donÂt really know whatÂs in there  you have a ½ inch snippet on the outside to get attracted to. The one I BOUGHT the fabric for (that I liked) was the batik with the wheat looking pattern  it had pink/lime green/blue in it. It ended up NOT being the focal  the blue and white series/run ended up being the stand out surprisingly enoughÂ

I was very disappointed in the quality of the jelly roll. You can see by the picture we arenÂt even talking about 1/8 or even a ¼ - weÂre talking in some cases a ½ inch off! To see that wiggle  those were off A LOT I cut off about ¼ on each side in many cases to try and straighten it out and there was still 2 1/2" of fabric.

I don't think they should be selling things that the consumer shouldn't be happy with. I'd definitely write to them. And I'd mention that you've posted pix of the inaccurate and unstraight stuff you got on a national quilting forum so they realize that they'd better expect to do it right if they want a decent reputation.

They're salvaging seconds when they make the cuts for layer cakes, jelly rolls, etc. Fair enough and an extremely cost efficient and "green" thing to do! But if they expect us to pay for it, it had better be right or we'd be better off with yardage we can do right ourselves.
