No More Mercy.....

Our newspaper had an article yesterday on shows that won't be returning and I am sorry to see that Mercy is one of the ones that won't be coming back. I really like this show and its storylines. Last week was full of twists and turns and I hate the thought that those of us who watch will be left wondering what happens, since the show is canceled.

That's why I rarely start watching any new shows anymore. I got very hooked on one called "Windfall" a few years ago and then they canceled it without wrapping it up... I kept wondering what happened to the characters and it was driving me nuts.

Sorry about Mercy.

I, too, struggle with guilt and pity for roses I've accidentally hurt in some way or shovel pruned despite their being healthy. I have experienced that many times. I cope with it with a few strategies. First, I try to find homes for them rather than shovel pruning. I've long since run through and exhausted my list of friends and neighbors who might want my cast-offs. Then I turn to Craig's List and list them as FREE. Second, I'm gradually getting thicker skin about shovel pruning the roses that are heavily disease-prone or just weaklings. I remind myself they started out as nothing more than pruning material we've all disgarded tons of. Third, the money I've spent on roses after giving away perfectly healthy roses that I just didn't love, I remind myself its just part of the cost of enjoying hobby and that it defintely is appreciated/needed by these rose nurseries. I still struggle with some twinges of regret: Roses I had mixed feelings about getting rid of. Sometimes they were great roses but too big for my limited space. Occasionally there's a rose that is great in every way--healthy, viorous, blooming machine even good bloom form, that I just don't like the color of. Winsome, St. Patrick, Pierrine all did well for me, but I could never get excited by them. The worst guilt is from occasional mistakes that resulte in my killing a rose. Oops. Particularly frustrating when its an unusual, hard to replace variety. I killed off New Yorker by over-fertiling the delicate thing repeatedly until it couldn't recover. (Palm slaps forehead)

There is a native Florida critter called a "cotton rat" which is rather cute. Kinda silvery-grayish, fluffy, with a shortish tail. On the other hand, the brown (non-native) rat is kinda long and slinky, uniformly brown, kinda greasy-looking, with a VERY long, bald tail. I've seen both kinds, and it's very easy to tell them apart. I've never heard of a cotton rat coming indoors, but I suppose there's a first time for everything. To me, a rat is a rat, and if your cotton rat insists on hanging around indoors, I'd whack him. I've never seen a rodent that wasn't somehow destructive in the long run.

You'll need to find out who is doing the damage before you can do anything about it. Woodchucks raze a garden like a lawnmower. Rabbits, unless you have a LOT of them, aren't as destructive in flower beds (vegetable gardens seem to be a different issue). With luck, you may only have one single woodchuck which you could trap and relocate. Bunnies, considering their rate of reproduction, aren't as easy. Get up very early one morning and watch from a window. Woodchucks tend to feed early in the morning or around supper time, if things are quiet. Rabbits feed whenever there isn't anyone around to frighten them away (at least mine do). I've successfully relocated a woodchuck, but have not bothered with the bunnies. They are in this neighborhood and I have some of the plants you listed, but they seem content to munch on lawn weeds. Another reason to avoid herbicides and overseed with clover. Applying things like cayenne or commercial products to keep critters away is only good for as long as it doesn't rain.

I grew a toma verde tomatillo in a 20 gallon container last year, and it produced at least 100 fruits. The yield was unbelievable and the plant grew at least 5 feet tall and almost as wide. (You will need to stake or cage it for best results.) They are like tomatoes. No need for pollination from a different plant. But, mine was so productive I became like one of those zucchini growers who sneaks them into everyone's mailbox to get rid of all the extras. Yours may be slowed down from being stunted before planting, so you may want a second. But give it a lot of room!

I was not a Mercy fan at all. I watched the first episode and found it very unrealistic and as a nurse it was just getting me angry.

Same as Heather, I watched a couple of episodes and it was no at all realistic. I kept sitting there saying "That's stupid".

Well, I guess some of us aren't very bright, then, because we didn't think it was stupid. :-)

The show reminds me a lot of the Irish neighborhood in Queens where I grew up.

You know, I just enjoyed watching the show. I'm not in the medical field and I didn't expect the show to accurately portray work in a hospital. When I'm watching TV, I do it for one of two reasons....relaxation or education. I consider Mercy, Brothers and Sisters and such to fall under the relaxation category. I don't want to think about whether it's "medically correct." I just want to watch the characters and follow along with their lives. I thought the show was great and I really liked the characters and the conflicts in their lives. I guess when Mercy is gone and Idol is over for the season, my television will be turned off one more night during the week.

I didn't watch Mercy, but I just read that Cold Case, Numbers and Law and Order have been cancelled along with a bunch of other CBS shows which pull in decent ratings.
They're bringing back Tom Selleck (cop show) and William Shatner (sitcom). Gee whiz..... back to the 70's.

oh i liked mercy and i watch law and order every day..reruns that i cant always watch at night. well that reall y stinks..cbs is really screwing up, first they take away guiding light, now it will be as the world turns in sept i think. jeepers. what will we have ..all reality shows? ill turn my direct off.

Nooooo! That is one of my favorite shows. I didn't watch it for the medical information, either. Is any show medically accurate? I never expected them to be.

Sometimes you just need to be entertained, and that is good! That was what television was supposed to be before all the reality shows took over!

I too liked Mercy. Never would I think to go to a television show to get my medical information/advice! But I suppose being a nurse or other medical professional it would be hard to watch.

It is hard to be entertained when every scene has things that are soooo wrong, or against protocol, or just plain implausible.....

Luann - What did you think of shows like ER? Were they any more "real"??? I have no clue....I couldn't handle being a nurse or doctor in an emergency setting!! I'd freak!

DH could tolerate ER as it was 'more real'...
he had lots of issues with St Elsewhere when it was on though!

I work in the medical field and I loved Mercy. Sure the medical stuff was not realistic, but i liked the stories. Now ER, that show just ticked me off--talk about unrealistic! I have never seen so many chests cracked and surgeries done in an ER as occurred on that show. I loved St. Elsewhere, though. It was on when I was in college so I didn't know any better, I guess. Many of the episodes made me cry.

Greys Anatomy was another that was unrealistic, but that's not why I stopped watching it. I couldn't stomach the Izzy/dead Denny doing the nasty in the call room. Creeped me out.

Sleeper, you can come back to Grey's Anatomy now--no more of that craziness (didn't creep me out exactly, just felt it was stoopid. like some of the writers were sitting around after dinner, brainstorming ideas, when one pulled some weed out and passed it around).

P.S. I have about half of a kilomtre left to plant - should be home doing it, right now - but I want to get the closing stock prices for this heavily down day - in both U.S. and Canada. Canadian Dollar down about 2 cents today!

No "Mercy" here, either, it seems!
