I like Melmac, too, and the set you bought is very pretty, have never seen a set in violet! I have microwaved my plates, but they have cracks in them now - bad, me!
The only thing you are missing is the sweet little cream and sugar to go with your set, Flamingo!
I'm sure your Mom will love them, too. Good find!

Really pretty! I grew up with Corelle....and I have only owned different Corelle sets.

I honestly didn't know that you couldn't microwave Melmac...or not suppose to.

Suzan, I have the cream and sugar and a funky gravy boat, they're in the glassine bag at the back right, I wanted a shot of them all wrapped up with ribbon and flowers! All I NEED is the divided serving bowl, then I think I'd have the whole set. Oh, and the salt and pepper shakers lol

I love Melmac/Melmaline too. It's all I ever use. I had my daughter get me some more plates from Ebay and we gave away our heavy sets of dishes. Give me the Melmac/Melmaline any day. You got a very pretty set.

I'm so sorry for you. It must have been hard to keep this secret for so long. LOL

I'm not sure I want anything 'unbreakable'. How do you justify replacing these? How satisfying would it be to hurl one of these plates at the wall? You'd have the mess and the dent in the wall, but no CRASH!

What a find! I keep on looking, but all the ones I see have utensil marks on them (from knives). Is there special utensils to use ~ plastic, maybe?

I really like the colour and pattern on those. Cute packaging also.

I grew up in a family with 4 kids, and so my mom decided to cut the breakage factor and buy a set of Melmac dishes in the 1950s, which I believe is when they first came out. They last forever! I remember having to bleach them to remove coffee stains every now and then once they got older. But she never had any chipped or broken dishes after that! You are a Retro Girl!

Hey! I used to own a set like that! I got mine second hand in the '70s. My roommates HATED them and made fun of them, but they didn't own any dinnerware to eat off of, so I don't get where they were coming from.

There are lots of people who collect Melamine dinnerware. Some of it was very pretty and well made. Some people find nostalgia in them.

We have a melmac set here that Tom is used to eating from, and prefers. They had 3 children, and I can see why they are here...but, the kids are grown. I don't mind using them outdoors, but I have to eat off real china. I'm used to it, and too old to change.
Again, to each her own.

I have Melmac in a rose pattern. I know we bought it in the mid 50's at Montgomery Ward. I have a service for eight. It came with dinner plates, salad/deserts, saucers and a large serving platter, pink cups, pink cereal bowls, and a large pink serving bowl. I still have and often use them. Except for some reason all the cups and a couple cereal bowls have gotten broken over time. Oops.

When we got these, microwaves weren't a factor, so that wasn't a problem. I have put a piece or two in the MW to warm up something. Didn't hurt them.

Mine are also Royalon and the roses are slightly different from this pic, which is Boonton.

Those are very pretty and in my favorite color! My Mother had several Melmac dishes, with a big red apple on them. I think my sister got them when Mother left assisted living. I don't know what we used growing up, I think they were just plain white old dinnerware. I use Corelle now even though I have other sets of dishes, they are heavy to handle.

Chisue, the only time I hurled a plate, it was an accident, I was trying to fling cantelope guts off of a corelle dish and sent all of it flying down a story to the driveway where it shattered into 5000 sharp shards of glass! No thanks, I don't want to have to clean up something like that ever again! Which is not to say I won't use my china or corelle, I will, but I won't be hurling any of it, ever, if I can help it! lol

It's a pretty small world when some of us had the same childhood Melmac. And in purple, no less!

Those are pretty! I never knew they had a name, though. My mom had some light blue dishes like that. They were boxed up at my parents house last time I was there, not sure my dad didn't toss them out. ) :

I always thought they were just any old plastic dishes. We also grew up with those and mostly Corelle.

I grew up with melmac dishes too, ours were "harvest gold"....ah, the 70's! LOL

The BEST thing about your 'obsession' for Melmac? Is that..it is part of your family history and that's what you'll take to the bank until the day you die! Be proud 'cause it's a 'family tradition'..one of which many of us relate to! We must always hold on to those things we grew up with..it's 90% of the chemistry that makes us who we are.

I grew up with Melmac but I can't remember the pattern Mom had. I'm sure it is going to bug me till I remember. I know the cups were aqua. With 10 kids Mom was so excited to be able to have unbreakable dishes.
