Help deciding on dining chairs

We recently purchased this dining table on Craigslist, it has a natural cherry finish and is 42"x72" for our dining room.

Now I need to purchase chairs. I really love these chairs by the same furniture company, but the price is going to be too much. Probably between $400-$550 a chair.

But I found an amish furniture seller online that has a bunch of different chairs. I can order them in cherry and the price generally seems to be less than $300, more like $250. But I need help deciding on a style. Here is a pic of my kitchen chairs, and I would like something different for the dining room. So not vertical slats basically.

So these are the chairs I am considering. The wood would be cherry, in a natural finish to match the table. I would like a cushion bottom, but DH wants wood.

Napolean Chair - looks somewhat formal without be too formal.

Hartford chair - like this one, but wondering if I will get sick of the deisgn on back of chair.

La Croix chair - this is alot like the ones I really like htat are too much $$, but the X slats look alot thinner

Also for a 42" x 72" table, would you just buy 6 chairs? or 8?

I usually prefer Napolean chairs, but with your table I think I would go for the La Croix style.

This one, in a cherry finish on the legs, and a microfiber that can stand up to the kids (or get slipcovers). I like the clean lines, the legs compliment the table, and the curved back compliments the more traditional feel of the kitchen cabinetry.

I'm so sorry I haven't been able to log on. I spent the last 2 days at the ortho dentist office w/ my DS1. OMG I couldn't believe how much his teeth is going to cost me !! *sigh* This is only phase 1 (expander/partial brace) and it's like 3K.. :-( Back to the trouble room -- I wasn't sure whether to go w/ straight legs or turn legs, and the consensus seems to be w/ the straight legs. Not a single vote for the farm table (!) I went to see no. 1 in person and it's a bit more overscaled than I would want. No 3 has that planked top which won't be practical. Plus it's more rustic (too rustic?) I found couple other tables -- maybe too refined for the motley crew? :-D Maybe this style but in a different finish? I have to go to some local shop as well. My friend tells me we can get custom made locally for a lot less than furniture store price. So that's another option. I agree the brown chairs are too much brown. Of the chairs you show, I like either the orange or blue (based on whatever your color scheme is) and the slight tufting adds some interest. The sea-green chair has too much tufting going on for such a simple table. Actually, the maroon chairs aren't bad, but, doesn't give much contrast to the brown table, IMO, but would work fine. If they are RED, then that's a better contrast. Have you checked the inside leg dimension on the table to ensure any of the optional chairs will fit with enough comfort space (elbow room) for the sitters if you are putting 2 chairs per side? This may help with your decision.

Hi Wanda- Please, please do not buy chairs from the Internet. Chairs have to be comfortable and sturdy and made to last and support even big people. You are much better off going to charity stores craigslist and tag sales looking for sets of chairs made of solid wood and recovering the seat cushions and painting the wood. These stores have so many of these sets now! It is so easy to cover a chair seat and not difficult to learn how to paint the wood or you can leave the wood the way it is or just sand and varnish it.

In our old layout, I eliminated the formal living room years ago...because of the way we live, it was absolutely wasted sqft. I turned it into a dining room and we used it a lot for birthday parties, making puzzles, reading plans etc. When designing our reno/addition, I for sure was going to keep the dining room but took out the eat in kitchen in stead. We added a larger island with seating for 5 (there are 6 of us...when everyone sits down, we use the dining room). We have enough space to seat 12 in the dining room, and also a 6 seater table on the deck outside the kitchen. This works for us. Nothing is formal, every place gets used by everyone.

I have Napolean chairs in my eat-in kitchen and really like them but also like the cross-back chairs. I think the La Croix will work best with your table.

The LaCroix style is pleasant, but I fear the proportions are too stingy for the elegance of your table. I agree that the Napoleon chairs aren't a good fit.
(I'm sorry I don't know how to make the pictures appear in the message...perhaps one of our cleverer posters can do that?)

Would you consider something like this, if it is in your range? Comfortable dining chairs encourage lingering at table, and leather is surprisingly forgiving.

This one is also a cross-back chair, but is a bit more graceful, to my eye, than the LaCroix model, and very inexpensive.

Thanks all. I like the other styles of chairs that people posted but they arent made out of cherry. I dont want something that is veneer or that is another wood that will not match my table.

And although I love the style of upholstered chairs, I'm afraid it wont work in our house because I have 2 cats with claws. I dont want my chairs to be shredded as soon as I get them. Also DH will probably veto it saying he wants wood.

So Napolean is a no-go. La Croix may not be grand enough.

LES - I do like the Grammercy chair, and the price is good. The cherry finish would likely be too red or dark though. maybe fruitwood would match better. Also the table will be in the dining room not kitchen, and we are planning a kitchen remodel to get rid of the oak cabinets that we hate. So in the end the gramercy chair's hump on the back would not match...does it matter?

I like the Hartford chairs as they are a little different. I agree with others that the Napolean doesn't work with your table. As for matching, it looks like you have a lots of cherry already in your house so I would suggest not trying to match the chairs to the table but pairing it with darker chairs similar in color to the Napolean chairs. Especially if you opt for an all wood chair I think the contrasting wood tones between chairs and table will be most pleasing.

Nice table!
Will the company you are considering ordering chairs from send you a sample of the finish? Sometimes it's hard to get a good match between different vendors.
