Poor Sydney!! Her car is totalled!!

She was at the mall Sunday afternoon when the hail storm came thru.....here is what she came out too!

It also cracked the whole front window and she has only liabilty on it! I feel sooo bad for her...she is getting the windows replaced asap but all the shops are backed up! She will just have to drive it as is til she can afford something new...I told her well she could park as close to stores as she wanted now and not worry about it getting any dings in it! Stacy

What terrible damage. So sorry for Sydney.

DH had hail damage twice on his previous truck... no broken windows though. I'll have to watch the video you linked.

Random thoughts, Violet.West, My personal take is that the primary reason people did not care for the home posted is that is it not currently on trend. I link below to the current issue of AD, which I have only perused briefly, for comparison. I think of the layered look as very Mario Buatta, and befitting Park Avenue matrons. Most people would rather not be a matron, and not be on Park Ave anymore. (most) I think the term "display of wealth" is an interesting one for decor, since relatively fewer people see your home (especially your entire home) than say, your car, or your watch. Especially, say, your MBA. So I am not always so sure you are looking at spaces created with the intent for "display", per se. Homes appear in AD primarily because the businesses involved in creating them want advertising; typically they pitch a home to the mag. Also, even for rooms or situations where people do wish to "display" something, it may not be wealth they wish to convey. Are they conveying wealth or class or lineage or worldliness or good taste or hipness or sophistication or success or cleverness? Those are all good possibilities. Or, are they just "keeping up with the neighbors". OR, hey, maybe they are not conveying anything much at all, just making places they feel comfortable in and enjoy looking at. I think we all agree that there is no good reason to mention the cost of anything, unless asked, and then one can always demur. Some people will ask the darndest things. The same people will ask to tour your home, which I used to find flattering but now I feel it is odd, other than close friends, and avoid it. OTOH, I do think that on an anonymous forum, any thing that might be useful is fine. Cost is very germane to decor of course. It is part of the educational process. More than once I posted specifically to ask if the cost of something seemed reasonable. In a business so rife with high markups and unscrupulous behavior, it is nice to have an unbiased source on your side. It's also nice to see what other people spend, to help establish your own guidelines. I am not sure there is any particular use to blanket statements about new wealth vs old, or about charitability by income bracket. I observe what I perceive as tackiness in all walks and lineage. I think a responsibility to give (and do) for others is a basic human obligation for all of us. One thing I greatly applaud is the integration of service learning into public school curricula, which I think is relatively new. It needs to be inculcated in everyone that service is just something that all citizens do. As for reveals, the only reveals I find offputting are people who have never posted before. I really like reveals of rooms that people have posted on over time. I find it interesting and satisfying, as well as inspirational. I appreciate any information, including costs, that people share. As for money and happiness. Money creates opportunities and helps to remove or lessen many of life's stresses. It is silly IMHO to claim otherwise. Does it mean the well to do never have a drinking problem or a broken family? Of course not. But what makes people happy? Certainly not money per se. I think I have mentioned this before, but I will again because I think it is such a useful concept. Most people spend a good deal of their energy and time on big goals. Say, for exampel, they want a newer, nicer, bigger, house. They will spend a lot of effort and time and money toward that big prize. However, research shows, that big changes, good OR bad, bring a spike of emotion, but then are rather quickly assimilated into your level of happiness, and become the new status quo. We've all probably BTDT. Whereas, small things, experienced frequently, raise your overall level of happiness throughout time. So,experts say, if you want to be happier, don't plan a 4 week vacation. Instead, go see a movie once a week. Don't buy a new house. Buy yourself a bouquet of flowers every Friday. FWIW Here is a link that might be useful: May 2014 AD

I didn't think about Shawnee Kim....Brian since their office is in Tulsa/Broken Arrow he knew of a place to call....so is just so excited....she so hates to depend on others because it puts them out....Yes she is learning alot Trin.....I am not getting her dad lately he was all like well move home, quit your job..work in muskogee and I won't charge you rent to live with us? Hello we just signed a 9 month contract she has told him over and over she does not want to end up living in checotah....she loves having her independece and is really trying...the storm was not her fault..and to top it off he also said from now on she can pay her own insurance?? I mean come on this child is trying hard to make it and now he throws this at her too? I don't get it!

I do think, FD, that he is still afraid of her wrath and what happens when she is angered. If he had said no to getting her a car---for whatever reason---she would have been mad and DH hates a confrontation. But see--that is an issue, too. He won't fight with HER but he has no prob. causing issues with ME. Why? Because he knows---at the end of the day---I will *shut up and put up.* These issues, one by one, aren't worth wrecking our marriage over, BUT when they all add up, it becomes a larger problem. That's what we really need to address in counseling. As far as him thinking he was doing me a favor--see, that bugs me too. I had ALREADY discussed the issue with him and said that I would be "on call" to get SS (if BM couldn't, due to lack of car) on Mondays and DH would need to take Tuesdays and every other Friday. I told him I 100% was NOT going to cover for her any more than that, and if HE wanted to be her "call-a-ride" HE could. But that I was not going to do it. He said FINE, I understand, don't blame you, I will not ask you to cover for her, etc. And then a week later tells me he got her the car to take the pressure off me so I would not have to be on call for picking up SS? BUT--I had already made my stance clear and thought he agreed---so it was like, at the back of his head, he was already *expecting* me to be on call for BM, DESPITE what he had said. Does that make sense? I often feel like he just tells me what I want to hear. It's really frustrating b/c I can never...well...trust him. As far as the "smokes"...ughh...she is just so...I don't know. Really, I look at her and the way she looks, talks, acts, lives, and think WHAT was my DH thinking??? She is so awful with boundaries, and DH plays right into it. Thank goodness he didn't get her any---he would not do that, he hates cigarettes, but I thought it was so ballsy/strange that she would even ask him! HA. DH told me when he dropped the van off at her house the other day, it was almost on empty (LOL) and BM turned to her DH and said "I need some gas money" and he started telling her all he had was $15 to last until next week, and she said "too bad, I need it for gas!" I'm sure that will be the next thing--the gas $$ problem--although she did make it all through last school year without a problem. But that was before they had ANOTHER baby. So we'll see. I feel sorry for HER hubby's parents and their frozen savings account.

I'm out of the shadows again on this one. 600 is not that great considering sub prime lending can start at 650. But at her age, she is just building experience on her file. The FICO algorithm models for the likelihood of delinquency within 24 months, so the factors going into that calculation correspond with the model value. The only way to improve credit score is to have credit activity. And installment credit is considered more favorable than revolving credit. Also impacting interest rates and loan approval is the ability to pay. Permanent employment is less risky than sub work, so you get a more risky loan for a higher rate. That only changes when you have a consigner who reduces the risk. My first solo car loan came with a 10% rate in the early 90's. Living debt free is great. However few people can afford a home with cash, at least where I live. Establishing credit with 7% interest on a $5,000 auto loan makes a lot more sense when you decide to buy a home with a 30 year amortized loan at a less favorable rate based on your lower credit score. Finally, there are several industry modifiers available with FICO, auto being one. So the version of your score the dealer pulls is different than the one you receive when you go online. And many lenders will have custom models that may, or may not, act as an overlay to FICO. They model for a number of factors including delinquency, bankruptcy and retention. FICO is to credit modeling as Kleenex is to tissue. Although I know the deal is done, I thought this might add some clarification for others.....Just some additional information for consideration from experience.

Oh Wow! I have family just north of OKC and they got a lot of damage too. Looks like they will have to get another new roof. They just had to get one last year because of hail. Too freaky. I don't miss living up there at all. LOL

I'm just Sydney's car damage was hail and it wasn't a wreck!

Yikes! I've never seen hail damage like that. The car dealers must be tearing their hair out. Of course, they're insured......

It hit so hard it knocked the ceiling light out Syd said it was just hanging by wires...what she is most upset about was it was her Grandads car! I will have to see if I can get the pic of the front of the car....course looks just like the back! I just watched several of the videos...and they are in for more today! Just glad she wasn't driving! Stacy

Oh, I'm so sorry. Is Sydney your daughter? This is something that would happen to my son; he's had a string of "bad luck" lately. I heard about that storm; very nasty!

The city and surrounding areas have been getting hammered lately...I am sorry Juellie yes Sydney is my daughter.....she is almost 19 and just finished her first year of college.....living on her own and working 2 1/2 hrs from home...this truly made her sick...seems kids can't get ahead no matter what these days you know? close my mouth!! Wow, I watched all 4 mins of the video and it was shocking. Their pool looked like it was boiling for a while. No wonder Syds car looks the way it does. I agree, Poor Sydney. What a mess for that city.

Yeah some friends of ours just got moved into their new house around Christmas and now have to get new windows and roof! I can't imange...I told them all the people of The city are not living right! Oklahoma is getting it this year!!!!! The video is wild isn't it? I was shocked....Stacy

Yup, the way her trunk looks, is how my car looks. Luckily I have no windows out, just the front very cracked. My insurance people haven't even called yet... they are way to busy right now.

Like you, I think, I don't have to worry about dings anymore.

On my way home from the library near Penn and NW Expressway I saw about 50 cars on the side of I 235 with broken out windows. All around Britton to Hefner.

Lots of people here are having their windows taped with blue plastic tarp.

When I drove to Britton and I-235 on Monday to meet a friend, it looked like a BIG semi spilled lettuce all over the road (Britton). And, there was still hail against the concrete barrier from the afternoon before.

We just had a rain storm coming through, but luckily this time no hail.

Her front one is just as bad moni but no holes....the back one fell in on her way back to her apt. I am sure they are just leaving them with notes...what else can you do? I hope that was the last one for OK. this season....I haven't talked to her since monday but she had to work so her stepbrother was going to try and get it fixed for her the windows)....not sure if he did or not...Brian is going to call her today and tell her no fixing the rest as it is totalled....I told him he can break the news to her....my bil owns a body shop and he said nope....no fixing that one! the front and top look just as bad...the vids are wild...I just kept clicking on diff. ones...well when you see her car Moni HONK LOL it should be noticable now!

Stacy there are actually more cars without hail damage driving around, then with. But most cars with damage have plastic tarps taped over the missing window, if it is on the side or back. Really don't see any with holes in the windshield on the road, but lots with spider web marks, like mine. I really don't consider it totaled, just major damage on the outside, doesn't really harm the mechanics of the car.

we had a hailstorm in Feb, 09 that destroyed our roof and put some serious dings in our truck but nothing that bad...hope she can get the windows replaced soon!

Well if she had total coverage they would have totalled it just because of the damage to it...but since she doesnt' and it runs great she is going to have to live with it! Her front one is still in but you can't see thru it and the back is totally out fell out when she was driving to her apt. That's what I'm saying Moni you should be able to recongize her easy now! LOL hers will be the one with hail damage! Thanks Liz....I will find out from B is she has had it fixed yet or not.....unless she calls me today...LOL Stacy

I have never in my life seen anything like that before. That is CRAZY and scary. I'm so sorry that happened to her car. I'm glad she's ok though.

Thanks Steph.....what is really amazing is her dad is being a total butt about the whole thing so it will fall on Brian and I to help her out! Sometimes I just want to punch him!!!

all i can say is HOLY CROW!!! whats with the weather lately? even here in ny it has been completely crazy! so sorry about her car.
