LR Part III: Not paint, but area rugs! Advice please

After my previous post, LR Part II, a lot of people asked if the rug was staying. I think I should replace it. The more I look at my photos the more I think the red just isn't right for the stone fireplace. I also think it brings out more red in the sofas, which are staying. I am also sampling some stain to darken the current color of the wood trim. Can you help me choose a rug and perhaps any ideas on paint colors?

You have 3 big focal points on the same wall, the FP and the windows on both sides. I noticed in one of your inspiration pics the trim is dark, in the other it is white. As far as the trim goes, I think it depends on the wall color on the fireplace wall. Dark trim is going to create a lot of contrast with a light wall and will compete for attention with the FP, light will create a lot of contrast with a dark wall. I think it would work best if the FP remains the focal point and you either go with dark trim and dark color on the FP wall, or white trim and light color on that wall. I am no expert, but that is what I would do.

Neither of your links took me to view a rug, sorry. The first link said "your shopping cart is empty" and the second went to another all-text page about a shopping cart.

I like the last picture best, but would go just a little darker on the walls, to get some warmth, and some contrast. IME the medium to pale browns/tans/beiges trimmed in white are warm, and very easy to live with and decorate around.

Traditionalgir, you are SO very wrong. For one thing, my feelings aren't hurt. Not sure where you got that idea. You have to have thick skin to be on this board, everyone's been treated this way at one time or another. And it's posts like your that keeps people lurking for years before they add another layer of skin. Too bad, really. Sofa table topic, I wanted ideas on how to decorate the top of it. That was all. Instead I got replies telling me to take it back to the store etc. Hardly any ideas on how to decorate it. Mantel topic, - Ditto. I need ideas on how to decorate the mantel. I got replies telling me to tear it down. THIS topic. - Ditto again. I wanted advice on COLOR ONLY, and look what I got instead. I did not ask for unsolicited advice, and that's when topics can get nasty. One of our long time favorite posters left because she did a topic similar to mine, and people were merciless with her and the room. She wasn't asking for advice on her room! I don't know why that's so hard for you and others to understand. If someone needs info on color, don't tell them to get rid of their furniture like was said to me above. It's not nice and it's crossing a line. So when I ask for advice on whether or not I should anchor a rug, I will TAKE that advice, but I did NOT ask for any advice on anchoring. So don't come telling me I won't listen to advice, when I was more than open on getting advice on COLOR only. Whew! Back to COLOR. :) You can't tell from the picture of the back of the room, and other rooms, but there are colors that will blend in with the new rug. I love the dark red that surrounds the rug, and I have a shelf of pink depression glassware in the back of the room, and other Victorian accessories I have in storage. The back of the room has a bit more feminine things to it, the front of the room is just a man cave. Now I can bring the whole room together. The Persian in the back of the room has some burgandy/rust designs in it with the muted turquois background. Love it! This new rug isn't a Persian, because it will get a lot of traffic and play time on it with the grandkids. Spills, etc. Now, If end up not liking it, I will ship that baby back, pronto.

OK, I've made decision to stop and live with it for a while. I like all the white and leaving the vault, kitchen ceiling and hall does blend away that 'wedge' I keep talking about. I want to thank everyone; especially SquireelHeaven for all the comments and help - it has been fun and interesting. One final comment. I gave up trying to cleanup that 100 feet or so of transition lines between the red and white. I painted (red) a small rounded moulding and ran it all round the whole thing. You can't even really see it and now all those lines are clean and sharp. The paint was Sherman-Williams Duration Home (Fired Brick, SW6335 in satin finish)and covered in one coat. I am looking for a rug to maybe go under the table, we will see. When I look at the before and after pics it's absolutely staggering to see the change. Now my white tile counter tops don't look near so bad and there is a much better balance of color.

Okay, I tried to be a bit more accurate in scaling, using the orange line to help (it's the same as the hallway line, 9'9"). Furniture in blue again; lamps are orange stars (I put a floor lamp between the chairs and table lamps behind the sofa, just to toss the idea out there). This arrangement could be flipped so that the chairs are in front of window and the sofa is in line with hallway (but still serving as a divider to create a bit of a foyer), if you want -- but -- the chairs won't be centered on the window. Don't know how much that would bug you. There's only about 10' between the front edge of the sofa and the TV wall, by this rendering. Any way you could verify measurements? The floor plan labels the living space as 27' wide, but if my math is correct, it's only about 20' wide (added the kitchen and dining together, and subtracted the laundry). 20' minus 5'-6' for a "foyer" pathway leaves 14'-15' for furniture. Sofa tables are, say, 1'-1.5' wide, sofas 3' wide, and yeah, that leaves 10'-11' between sofa and wall. Roughly the same distance between the window and the backs of the chairs. To make it feel more open, the chairs definitely need to be in front of the window, but it pushes the sofa into the "foyer," if the chairs are centered. I dunno.... I'd prioritize creating an entry space, so I would definitely not rotate the arrangement, putting chairs across from the TV. But that is 100% my untrained self, lol. Edited to add:Not sure how I feel about that one.... :-/

The rug in the before picture is long gone. It was pretty "bossy" and I feel the room improved tremendously once it was removed. With the black background, it was very dark and I'm leaning toward a much lighter look. The room has a northern exposure. I like the rug you posted, Jinx, and the coffee tables. Thanks!!! I feel once I have chosen a rug, choosing a coffee table will be much easier. In my head, I keep going back and forth between a patterned rug as you suggested and a light rug with texture. We love the new windows. The original windows did not open, but now we have casements on either side. I like sitting in the chair near the window and enjoying the breeze. The coffee table is also long gone. It was metal and glass and the corners made me very nervous with our young grandchildren. Even if I end up with another metal and glass table, I'd like to avoid corners. The little side table is still around, but not at our house. My son and DIL are using it right now. I keep going back and forth on chairs - pair or 2 different chairs. Either way, I am considering having an ottoman at one of the chairs. The art over the console was from Crate & Barrel, but I believe it's no longer available.

If you are using patterns in your rugs or curtains, then pick them out first. It's much easier to match your paint to your rug/curtains than it is to match your rug/curtains to your paint.

Here are the instructions originally posted by someone else (sorry I forgot who).
"Go to the website with the photo, put your cursor on the photo and RIGHT click and a box will pop up. LEFT click on VIEW IMAGE INFO A box will appear with the line LOCATION: followed by that photo's location on the web starting with HTTP and ending with JPG.
Copy and paste the location into your post at GardenWeb.
Type in front of it img src=
It will look like this:
img src=http and so on, ending with jpg
Then add carets at the beginning and end.
Preview the message and if you don't see the photo, something has gone wrong.

It is complicated to explain, easy to do. It's easier if you print this out and follow the instructions."

With the photos from Overstock, I had to click on them for a larger view before I could right click and get the VIEW IMAGE INFO to appear. And the Ballards weren't jpg photos, but I just copied the "image location" and put the at the end and it worked. (I added an extra space after src before the = in this paragraph or it would have thought I was trying to post a photo here!

Oh criminy, it DID think I was trying to post a photo and messed up my instructions! let me try again. The instructions are correct, my explanation about Ballards is goofed up.

I copied the img location even though it didn't end in jpg and it worked fine. Just use the regular instructions but note that not all pics have jpg at the end.

Well, no one else has weighed in yet on your rugs. I absolutely love #1 with your fireplace and leather. the pattern and colors seems like they could carry both and not be lost, nor too bold. I'm not crazy about #3 because of the odd way the patterns are cut off where they connect. The others are pretty, though. I'm sure others who will know which might work best will express their opinions.

I like #s 1 & 2, and don't care at all for the others. I think I'd go with #2....

I also like any of the first three... I even like the last one but I think if you are trying to minimize the red then stick with the first 3.
Just took another look, and if I had to pick my favorite for the setting, I would go with #2.

I have rug #2 (though don't have it out atm due to repainting the room it was in)and it is very pretty in person. The base color is a bit more of a cooler green than it appears in the overstock pic online (on my monitor anyway).

All the rugs you posted are nice, so think it all just depends on the overall look and color scheme you are trying to achieve.
