What kind and size needle do you use for machine quilting? Do you find the different needle type and size improves your stitching?

I have only used the universal size 80 & 90 needles, but I have only quilted using simple straight stitching, stitch in the ditch (which I find too tedious to stay in that ditch perfectly) and 1/4 " stitching using transparent thread to achieve that hand quilted look. I am practicing free motion on scraps and I bought size 11 quilt needles to try, but have not had the time to dedicate to practicing FM lately.
