A year of promise and disappointment revisited for 09 and a Rant

I had a page on my Journal for the 2009 harvest which has been deleted. This spring I thought it was going to be a great year for the garden. As it turns out it is a 50/50 combined effort between Mother Nature and us. I think I did my part but MN let me down. We had a beautiful spring but the weather never changed, it was the coldest/wettest summer that I can remember in 52yrs of gardening. A year like this makes me think about the settlers and early pioneers and how they were at the mercy of MN. We can always run to the store and pickup this or that but they could not.

Now comes the rant. Thank heavens the promoters like AG of "Global Warming" are still alive to get some feedback about there ridicules claims. Can you imagine all the instrumentation around the world and the work force to collect the data and get an average to make such claims? Maybe it would be possible today but how about 20-50 years ago let alone 200-500 years ago. Now I fell better getting that off my chest and maybe I can start planning next yearÂs garden. John

Sounds like an unfortunate year. I dunno about the whole global warming thing, but I say that I'll believe it when it starts getting hot. Once the average temp in the summer is in the triple digits, I'll start worrying.

I think MN threw all of us a curveball this year. Blossom end rot and cracking fruit became the norm for my tomatoes, and there wasn't a thing I could do about it. I understand that every year won't provide the optimal circumstances, and only hope that the next year will be better.

I can't find where it says that "many blue flowered" kinds are not. Most blue flowering passionvines are fine for GFs, VFs, and zebras, including p. caerulea - there are supposed to be a few (or maybe one) type of blue flowering vine that isn't good, but I've never read specifically which one that is. I've got some p. caerulea - the GFs don't lay eggs on it as freely as they do the p. incarnata, but they will use it and grow successfully to maturity on it. It's the red flowering passionvines that are USUALLY toxic to the frits, but there are exceptions to that rule too, reportedly 'Lady Margaret' is okay. I planted 'Lady Margaret' and the leaves look a lot like p. incarnata, one of its parents, so I imagine they have a similar chemical content. Most white/yellow flowering types are okay, too. I have p. biflora and p.lutea, and they've both supported the frits successfully, their problem is that they're even less popular for egg laying than p. caerulea - the frits only use them when the p. incarnata and p. caerulea are completely eaten up. So, the GENERAL rule of thumb is blue flowering passionvines are okay, red flowering ones aren't. MissSherry

We'll have to see what happens with the sweet peas. I'm still coaxing them, but they are grabbing. I guess fuschias can really be bad in hanging planters, only had one once put in on the north by the back door, don't remember watering problems. Lately I've been watering three times a day. Three o'clock in the afternoon and I have to water, can't wait til 7, stuff is drooping. The heat wave has been awful. I can't keep that up, so will have to come up with some plants that do better in poor soil and tolerate drought or sink deeper roots. I wondered why everybody plants coneflowers around here. Now I know. Yes, windowboxes and planters dry out more quickly I've found, and I haven't hit on the right combo of compatible plants to add color and interest. I've got geraniums with iresine and alyssum. The latter like moist, geraniums flower better a little on the dry side. I'm using peat-based media. You're right, it is fluff. For some odd reason I packed it in firmly but not that firm and it is popping up over the pot when it gets dry (that's for the herbs I finally got around to planting this week, many pots). I patted it down again and watered. I like it because it retains water better. But I overplanted alyssum in the stuff and almost lost it because it started to wilt, caught it in time. Zone 5, eastern Iowa, thought it too late to plant viola seeds. Think I'll order some tomorrow, and plant half and save the rest. I'm not real confident they'll grow well enough to last through the winter; it's getting late in the season. Don't know if I can bring them indoors or not, probably better not to. I don't have many choices of where to plant them in the ground. I suppose I can dig them up in the spring and move them. Most of my plans for this summer have been thwarted, won't go into it and the frustration and disappointment. Will only say that front is rototilled either side of the walk, edging laid on one side, the grass was not removed, it's too moundy, I need to get two expensive arbors I ordered installed and don't know who I'm going to get to do that for me and how much more that will cost. The people who help me who I pay have problems and don't show up. All this chatter and my gardening are my escape from probs in the family. It gives me something to look forward to. My biggest regret in life is that I didn't get into plant science. I'm fascinated with crosses and genetics but probably not very good at it, and I don't tolerate the heat in greenhouses well, let alone when it zooms up in the high 90's like today. I was out watering. Hated to do it but had little choice. Stuff was wilting and was afraid to wait until 7. Yes, well my plans are not realistic. I'd better learn to go with the flow. I always want to try things the neighbors don't have. I spose you can't post photo of your windowboxes. I'd love to see what you do with them. Roses in windoboxes? That is almost funny, but why not? You gotta do what you gotta do. I've got to find some new roses to root, then figure out what to do with them. I know, I'll plant the violas in the six rolled pots I was saving. Hah. Just about all my outdoor pots are in use now or earmarked for something important. I can plant the pots in the ground for the winter and try to fool them, then if they survive, transplant them in the spring. I won't have many that way. Maybe I'll plant them in a bad place on the east of the house I don't have a plan for yet and move them if they do well. Thanks for the encouragement! Sorry I rambled so. I so wanted to make things really nice and am not where I wanted to be by now, knew I couldn't do it all in one season.

Cdbob, I get where you are coming from, trying to do this "cheaply as possible" was what I was trying to do as well, but a few small & inexpensive purchases as Dave & others mentioned will work wonders, I agree. This is my first yr doing so & this past week I got our first harvest & the tomatoes were awesome compared to store bought! I used small containers like yogurt cups with holes drilled in bottoms & some cups (Solo red disposable cups you get at walmart, like what you would use for a bbq or kid's birthday party, they were 30 for $3.45 or something like that) & used soil-less seed starting mix (Jiffy brand form Walmart for $3.47 a bag, one bag more than enough for our small garden, Lowes also had Ferry MOrse & Miracle grow brand for similar price). I bought some seeds from some sources recommended here & got some from some generous people here for SASE and some from Trudi's website wintersown.org for sase also. I wanted to try different types to see what grows best for us here in FL. & what each person in the family likes best, but didn't have alot to spend, so this worked wonderful. The seed starter works awesome! I had tried seeds from store bought tomatoes and had no results worth anything except for seed from a purple cherokee I got at a store. Everyone here is very helpful & has lots of good advice. Try again using cups or something larger than the egg carton, I do use egg cartons but for germinating small flowers like pansies, violas & nasturtiums & use seed starting mix in the cartons for these. Good luck & give it a try using the info you got here. Visit Trudi's wintersown website for free seeds (she will sendyou small pkts of at least 6 types you choose for the cost of an envelope and 3 stamps, one to mail to her & two on the sase to return to you!) I am surprised by how small of type I can read without reading glasses with my monovision. Unfortunately my eyes still feel kind of strained by the difference in the two. My discomfort comes from the unevenness of my vision rather than an inability to see things. If on,y my brain could adjust to this, It wold be amazing. However, I just went upstairs and tried to thread a needle and I cannot do it With my reading glasses on, no problem. I also need a lot of light to see well. I also had great near vision before my cataract surgery. I'd always take off my glasses to read or work at my desk or at a restaurant. I had to put them back on to see far. I miss that too, especially being able to read in bed at night without glasses. If I could do it over, I would get good distance vision and use readers. You also can get bifocal type glasses where the top part is clear glass and the lower portion is your reading prescription, so you don't have to keep taking them off and on. Good luck with your choice. I use a magnifying mirror for makeup.

I was pretty surprised with how well things grew this year in Central Illinois - although I did have my share of problems.

This was the first year I really began making use of a hybrid-type of square foot garden.

More or less, it was just making raised boxes that varied in sizes because of the limited amount of space in the yard.

I also am hoping next year is better. While I had a bumper crop for carrots, peas, green beans, peppers, and spring lettuce, the corn was pretty pathetic along with tomatoes and cucumbers. In years past, the cherry tomatoes were everywhere and I couldn't keep up with picking them. This year I was lucky to get two pounds off of two plants - both of which died very quickly and early. But, I received enough best boy/roma tomatoes to do about a dozen quarts of canning and some slicing here and there.

I'm kinda glad to hear that I'm not the only one who was disappointed with the garden this past year.

This year was my worst year for tomatoes (5 years in my current location). And many tomatoes were splitting on the vine, BEFORE they started to ripen.

Ironically, I planted some "Sub-Arctic plenty" tomatoes, and these little buggers produced far more than I ever thought they would. First, they are determinate, so I expected to get a harvest, and then have to pull them and replant that spot. However, they didn't stop producing until just this past week or so. As soon as I thought they were done, they put out a whole new batch of blossoms, and went back to producing again! This happened FOUR times, which, is quite unusual (I believe) for determinate tomatoes! These were my best producing tomatoes this summer, by far! I plan to put them in again next year, just to make sure I get a tomato harvest (colder weather doesn't seem to bother them as much).

Mine was a lousy, lousy year as well. The tomatoes had blossom end rot, cukes were bitter, I had an infestation of squash bugs, our summer was warmer than usual but we got super early freezes just when I was beginning to see signs of hope on the winter squashes and the white ghostbuster eggplants were purple. I still learned some things though and I hope next year is better, especially if Santa brings me a huge roll of row cover material.

Yup. Our year wasn't very good on the Colo Front Range either. Damaging hail, long cool spring, early fall, snow in September followed by 2 days in low 20Âºs F. Ah, well.

Couple of things. My first year back in the garden in 10 years and it was "interesting." Got six tomatoes before the blight, (But wow, did they look great before that!) and the best crop of lettuce and arugula I EVER had. Everything else was okay, not fantastic but I chalk that up to me getting back into it, not the weather so much. It was cold and damp but I love salad. I didn't need the farmers market for that for months! (Which was the whole point of getting back into gardening.) And I often thought too, of my forebearers and how they got through lean years...

Notice the question mark after the six in my zone? That's because when we moved up here, oh geez, 20 years ago, (time does fly!) we were zone 5. So "Something" is happening, Global warming or Mother Nature's planned climate change, I can't say, but something is definitely, slowly, gradually going on.

hey EG did you try the tums and the epsom salt thing, i think i told ya about it last year. i put hmm...about 5 this year of tums in the hole then the plant, and 2T of epsom salts on the dirt. then water well. i don't ever have that blossom rot. or the blight early or late. Remy says that blight is regional, so i must be in the region that doesn't get it. **big smile** although i have seen some peoples tomato's that don't look to whoopy!! i thought Hey! i'll drop in and see what's going on in that forum, i haven't been in here in ages! ~medo
