Any advice on a reputable pool builder in the Katy, TX area?

We are in the beginning stages of making our dream of owning a pool a reality. I have searched the web and have been reading everyone's advice/experiences on this forum.

Castle Rock and Platinum Pools are 2 builders that I would like to come out and give us an estimate. Has anyone done business with either of these 2 builders, or can you recommend another builder?

Any information would be most appreciated.

Hi,

Check the BBB, consumer reports and ripoffreport.com for complaints on pool companies. Platinum Pools was one of our top 2 choices. I'm not sure if the pool builder we ended up choosing goes to Katy. I will find out and let you know.

Keval, Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I am actually an ex-builder (Thank God HAHA). Salt vs Chlorine, in my opinion is really just a personal choice. As far as discoloring the rocks and pitting them,I may be wrong but I suppose it COULD happen. Moss rock is pretty soft. I am not real sure maybe Kelly (Huskyrider) would be a better person to ask. As far as Troy he is a pretty straight shooter, I can't imagine him not taking care of any issues or building an inferior pool. He is also a pretty good designer, some of the more detailed work plan wise I have seen. This is of course based off of stuff I have seen a couple of years ago. we recently signed a contract w Claffey (haven't started actual build yet). they were about 4-5k higher than the other 2 bids we got, but i've had two friends use them and they had positive experiences. this is our 1st pool build so i felt better about going with someone with their reputation even if it cost a little more. so far i would summarize the pros as: knowledgeable salesperson, willing to stay in a budget range, willing to itemize estimate to help with trade-offs (not just a single 'bottom line price' where you can never figure out what costs what) the only real con is that their price was higher. but with the stories i hear about less reputable PBs adding on unexpected charges during the build or failing to live up to warranty claims etc, I'll have to see what the ultimate "total cost of ownership" is to find out if it is really more expensive or not we'll see how it goes...

No, the soil is just the excuse they are trying to use to not fix it. We will be heading to arbitration so it will all get resolved one way or the other. I know that Dallas is a different office and hopefully they are better folks. I just wanted to point out that a national builder with a "great" warranty doesn't always mean things will work out and to be sure that you understand what protection the contract does and doesn't give you.

Brena - Thanks for the advice. I will definitely see if any complaints have been filed.

Landmark - Your pool is absolutely gorgeous! I love the rock wall. I will have to keep that in mind. Hiring a landscape architect is a great idea! Can you recommend one? What does it cost to have something like that done?

We used Hamilton-Steele (see link below)who we saw at a home show earlier this year. They charged $500 for the design. In the end we didn't go with them to do the project because after 3 revisions to the pool design it still wasn't right. I think one problem was that the salesman acted as the interface between us and the architect. We never met with him so something was lost in translation. However I think it was worth it to have a good starting point to work with other pool builders.

One of the things we liked about Castlerock the salesman (owner) realy liked freeform pool design. He worked with us for many hours to get things just right. I hope that helps. Good luck in your journey. There will be bumps along the way but it is well worth it in the end.

Has anyone used Watts Pools? We are looking to update our existing pool with pebbletec or river rok.

I think Richards Total Backyard is an excellent builder. They are on 6 just south of I-10. Also Adam Traugott at Sunset Pools does really nice work. He lives in Cinco Ranch, I think.
