traditional chlorine vs salt chlorinator

I'm renovating my pool and am deciding whether it is worth it to put in a salt chlorinator. My PB is telling me that over 50% of his clients are installing them during renovation or build because people enjoy the feeling of it more. And because of the cost of salt used is less than chlorine each year, I would get my money back within a couple years (for paying additional $$ for the salt chlorinator system). Does this sound right? Is there any more maintenance I would have to do for a salt system than a chlorine system? I live in the Northeast, in case that makes any difference. Thanks!
