water-line tiles

I'm building an 18x42 foot pool in my backyard. We're lining it with Pebble-Tec (probably Tropical Breeze), and the decking around it will be flagstone (grey flagstone coping also). Since I'll only build a pool once, I really want to get it right! What type and color of water-line tile would look best with the flagstone and the PebbleTec? My pool builder says that only about 3-4 inches of tile will show, plus the top of the pool cover mechanism. I really have no idea where to start. My house has a classic feel, and I don't tend to like a really modern look.

Pebble Tec now makes a waterline tile that "matches" their PT gravels. Ask the PB to show you samples. It looks very understated and nice. I don't like tile that screams "look at me". I like ones that blend in. But it's personal preference.

I checked out about 4 pool books from my local library just to look at tile! LOL. Going to a sample show room will really help too since things in reality usually look very different then on paper.

I am with Katherine, definitely look at the PT waterline tile. They didn't have that when we built our pool 4 years ago and went with PT all the way up. It looks like crap now because of the calcium buildup.

I think you need to look at your coping, a sample of your PT and your tile choices all next to each other. That is the only way to get what you like, posting on a forum can't give you the vision like if you had the three materials in front of you.

Your pool tiles should be ceramic with a glazed surface so they do not need to be sealed. Ceramic tiles are water and frost resistant. I think you could seal the grout. If you installed travertine or another porus tile you could seal them.

Thanks, gawebber. I do have a blue sample but I'm so afraid it will clash with our french gray hydrazzo. I'm still researching. From reading various threads here, most people are using pebble tec or something equivalent. Our pool builder swears up and down that it will be too rough for the kids. Laura

Hi. Thank you for the prompt replay. One leg of the "L" is 1/2" long and lays over the front face of the tile. The other leg of the "L" is 3/8" long with a 1/8" flap that acts like a lock to keep the "L" locked into the very narrow space above the pool wall behind the tile and the under side of the cement deck. The small 1/8" flap at one end of the "L" forms a water seal between the top side of the pool wall and the bottom side of the deck. Imagine an upside down "L" at the front face of the tile and the upper edge of the tile extending between the lower edge of the deck. It appears the tile, which is cemented to the pool wall helps hold the plastic against the lower side of the pool deck. Bill

Go with something very simple.... that blends with the Pebble tec. Remember to old bathrooms of the 60's, pink and brown tiles. Not so good now. If you have stone coping, I would use a tile that just blends into the water, very natural.

I've designed over 500 pools.
