Ideas for making pool more "friendly?"

Hi everyone, I just moved into a house in San Diego that has a swimming pool. One thing I don't like about it is there isn't any green space in the fenced-in back yard: it's just all concrete except for a small deck and a little pie-wedge shaped flower bed where the pool pump and filter are. Does anyone have any ideas on making the space a little nicer, maybe a little more "friendly?" I definitely want to put some plants, etc. in the flower bed and in containers around the area, but the concrete just seems so stark and unwelcoming against the blue of the pool and the green of the trees. Thank you all for any advice!

I have small palm 'tree's in blue glazed pots. Around the bottom of the palm, in the pot, I've planted vinca and purple wave petunias. They stand about 4 feet tall and are easy to take care of.

Not only are they pretty, but the palms waving in the breeze add movement. Love them. Get compliments all the time.

That said, you're in San Diego so you probably already have palm trees? But here in Michigan, they're quite the novelty.

Can you build sturdy trellis' to camoflauge the equipment and to grow some colorful vines on?

Colorful umbrellas and a couple of pillows thrown on chairs would be an easy way to soften up the area, too.

My SIL built a nice set of swings with 1 a tire & a large platform & big slide. It looked great but the slide was hot all the time in So. Ca. so it got used a little in winter but too hot to use most of year. The large platform would have been a fine fort with a large roof over it maybe going out over the slide. The "steps" were like a large board with strips attached so you could walk up it with a large knotted rope in your hands,rope was attached at top of ramp on an upright post, kids loved that part.Their favorite thing was trampoline with a netting around it so couldn't fall off & crack your heard. My kids favorite thing was toddlers-little swimming pool, dumped & changed water each day, got aluminum sided pool as they got about 4 & at 5 son took lessons but instructor asked if she could use my 3 year old DD.The class kind of got shamed into learning, figured if she could go under they could too! She had no fear of water & soon I had 2 excellent swimmers. Got 3 ft deep pool 12-14ft across with ladder. Otherwise they liked to ride bikes & had regular swing set with trapeze ? bar you could hang on, always hanging around or hanging from a tree if they weren't doing other 2 things. Kind of go with things they seem to like. Sandbox is a mess if not always covered every cat will find it. If they don't like sand all over don't bother. DS loved to take his trucks or matchbox cars in garden area I would make for him in shady spot just 6 ft long & 2 ft wide & he played there a lot.

Thank you all for your input. I have been listening. We need to get this hammed down because we have to put the order in. This is what lowes had. The island and peninsula are the problems still. All the measurements are correct but this isn't to scale. We're not fans of the half moon and the 2 stools. Its a tight space so we have to pick our battles. For Stove items if we put something in the stove it will be for at least 30 min, so i don't mind walking over there. As far as the turkey dinner goes, the bird gets priority. If I need room, i'd tell the person to move out of the position so i can set the turkey down. We do want the desk, with 1 baby and another on the way, we want a place to keep family business in 1 place, process mail ect. Also I figure we could do photo editing there too while the kids play in the living room (when there older). Everyone I know who has had a desk in the kitchen has loved it. So we'd like it. It doesn't have to be as big though. As far as being social goes, I really mean for family dinners if possible. We do have a casual dining room on the other side of the oven, so I may say screw it and go back to the architects rough plan and try to stick a extra at one end. Any other advise? Adding railing to the porch and changing out the wrought iron railing on the left to all white would make a major difference. I would also see about boxing in the posts so that they have a little more substance to them, and become a part of the decorative element of the railing. Right now they just look like they are there to hold up the overhang. Maybe add the support pieces on either side at the top of each post (I think they call it a 'birdfoot' style) for more interest. I like what Chicagoans did bringing down the stairs to the front, but I am guessing that is perhaps not practical given the way your lawn sits in relation to your driveway and parking. I think the shutters are okay in black, but I would change out the door to either a bright golden yellow or a red, or perhaps a bright turquoise. Plantings: flower boxes at the windows; certainly a tree on the right side out in front just a bit, with plantings around the base and a pretty white bench. Create a planting bed in front of the porch with a mixture of elements, rather than the little bushes marching in a row. That bed could curve out and back toward the railing going down on the right. I would consider cutting back or taking out the bushes by the mailbox, and instead creating a planting bed that curves a bit and incorporates both the mailbox and the post light. Edging the driveway with plantings would help the feeling, too. If you don't have them already, i would also consider adding can-type lights (outdoor, of course) in the ceiling of the porch in several places. It will add light to the porch at night and on gloomy days, and help make that the friendly focus of the front of your cottage home.

Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions. I love both the grey and cream colour schemes. Provincial regulations require a fence around the pool which cannot be chain-link (which is climbable), however this unfenced pool dates to the 1960s, before those laws were in effect, and is therefore grandfathered. Needless to say, grandfathering doesn't prevent a child or pet from drowning, so one of our first priorities upon closing will be to erect a fence. To answer questions, and for clarification, the large entry door is not the main entrance to the house, unfortunately. The small door to the left is. The larger door leads to a room with a bar, which is directly under the master bedroom and connected to it with a staircase. We plan to remove the bar and make this area our home gym. The roof is not Spanish clay tile, but rather asphalt shingles in a mottled terra cotta, brownish colour. (The house - a second home for us - in the Laurentian mountains, an hour north of Montreal, so no terra cotta tiles around here!) It is indeed a very awkward layout that will be challenging. There are even weirder features inside, however the location (proximity to our home in Montreal) and large non-motorboat lake are spectacular, so those factors sold us!

We had a huge concrete expanse that I wanted to camouflage, too. Our problem was a little different, as we could see our rear-load garage and huge parking pad from the pool with just a wrought iron fence in between. We went with big fiberglass/resin pots from Walmart that look like glazed terra cotta because I needed a bunch of them and couldn't afford (or have a place to store over the winter) real terra cotta. They look amazing! I want to get a few more for next year and relocated our deck box. We did the potted palms with blue daze and million bells and I think they look awesome (again, in Oklahoma, palms are a little more rare than in San Diego.)

I think if you have a fence you should look at attaching planters to it and going vertical with some plantings. Google image search for "planters on fence" and you will see tons of ideas. I've seen lots of people use old gutters for this, but it depends on what your fence can hold and your aesthetic as to what will work for you. I recommend setting up a timer/drip system for pots, as ours would have died long ago if we didn't have that in place.

Think about using upholstered/cushioned outdoor chairs and lounges and an outdoor rug to further soften things up.
