Air Force One flew over my back yard!

Yesterday President Bush was in Kansas City for something (don't know what) and the plane landed in New Century Airport, about 25 miles from the "big city." It's also 1-1/2 miles from my house if you were to go through the pastures and cows.

I was working from home and when it came in, it flew right over my back yard! That thing is HUGE! (especially when it's right over your head!)

When the rumbling started, we thought it was a big military plane (can't remember the name) that comes in once a month or so. But it got louder and louder and the house shook ... DH and I ran outside and he said it was a 747 and we saw it said Air Force on the side. We heard it land at the airport.

Got back inside and the news came on and said Air Force One had just landed at our airport. WOW!

It took off after awhile and we thought he was gone, but it came back later in the afternoon, so evidently that was a security ploy. Oftentimes, when there's a high level somebody in the KC area, they use a different airport for the official but a variety of military planes will use New Century as a base and they fly around looking for something suspicious.

I'd like to see that plane. My house shook when the space shuttle exploded near my area.

Edie...Funny story...last summer, Sean had some buddies over for a swim. His friends know where Sean's plant collection is--grouped together near the house by the pool. One of the guys decided to be a smart a--, and grabbed one of the smaller cacti in a pot and yelled to another guy in the pool, "let's play keep away from Sean...". Now mind you, these were all baseball players with pretty good arms... One of the other 'new' guys said "hey..throw it here" (he was in the pool-not knowing what kind of plant it was). Sean just stood there shaking his head and told them I don't think you want to do that...the kid threw the plant to the other kid, and he caught it mid-air about 30 feet away---along with a handful of thorns!!! OUCH!!!! I'll never forget the scream! Sean said "they'll never touch my plants again!!!" Yes, boys will be boys...

Well I'm back, after having consulted with 2 geothermal installers. One is doing a complete load calculation and evaluation for geothermal versus an air-source heat pump, for us to compare against the quotes we have for just doing a/c. The other guy won't do a full analysis, including potential cost savings based on our individual usage patterns, without us paying a large fee for that service (US$700), but he was definitely there to try and sell it. Both gave a ballpark of the cost being about 3x (at least) of our a/c-only quotes, and both said that we'd have to have a split system (two systems?)--one in the basement going up to the first floor, and the split being in the attic coming down to the second floor. And because of that, the cost goes up. The first says we have enough room to trench, while the other says he prefers drilling vertically, saving horizontal loops for unlandscaped/non-lawn areas (like for brand-new construction). Both did say that our access in our unfinished basement and attic are generally good. We have one more home visit by another geo person, but I can already tell that my husband thinks it's way out of reach, though he loves the idea of geothermal. He's now back to thinking that we should just buy window a/c units, as the easiest and cheapest option (he also thinks it would be more energy-efficient if we only get 2 for the hottest 2 rooms). I guess I won't discount geo until I see a hard number from the first guy and compare it to the air-source heat pump option (which I had not considered, either). But there's the update, anyway. I'm very envious, Pyropaul, that your cost did not end up being prohibitive for your old house retrofit! Do you have a split system, too?

Hello; I don't know what you should or shouldn't use but here is what I did! We took over (bought) on a log cabin being built in the Lake Tahoe area and I did a little research & I went with hydroic floor heating system. What was so neat was when you walked in, the house was just unblievably warm. No dust, no fan , nothing! Our cabin was 2,000 sq ft with 4 heating zones (2-bedrooms, loft, & kitchen/nook/greatroom combo. We placed a thermostate in each zone so that we could not heat each zone independently as needed. I did do some of the work myself like cutting up the 1,000 ft roll rubber hose to 4ea. 250' sections so that I could run them in a continuous form with out any joints except at the boiler (No Leaks). I started every run with a loop through the bathroom then along the out side walls and into the center until my half way mark was secured to the floor then i reversed back to the boiler. I did this to each area & then ordered light weight concrete & had it pumped in over the floors to 1-1/2" thickness to cover the piping. I ran plastic, cardboard, & then my hardwood (glue together, NO nails) flooring for great looking floor that was warm to your feet on a cold night. I also used a non-conventional water heater that a line from the boiler runs though or around the outside walls (separate from your house hold water) that heated the water, & we also installed a 1/4 h.p. motor on a circulating line that saved us from having to wait for the water to get hot to take a shower. Because I was in an area that I didn't need A/C help make this a player for me & I absolutely loved the system that cost us an extra 20% over forced air system, but this was in the early 90's, so I'm not up to speed on whats available now. Radiators do not dry the air any more than any other heat source. All other things being equal, the only things that affect the final relative humidity are the absolute humidity in the air and the air temperature. What makes indoor air dry in winter is excessive air exchange with outdoor air. The moisture that is produced by ordinary living (breathing, cooking, bathing and cleaning) leaks out. Poorly designed and installed ducted, forced air, heat can make matters worse by inducing pressure differentials turning the forced air system into a power vent. If you have excessively dry air, put money into air sealing your structure. It will pay off handsomely in summer and winter. Steam heat radiators that are installed well in a good design and maintained properly can be silent, or nearly so. There is something wrong with your system. I am not saying that you can easily fix it, but there is something wrong. A competent steam contractor will know how to add a steam heat exchanger to your current cooling duct set-up. High temperature steam is ideal for a relatively compact heat exchanger. The main problems might be how to run the pipes and if there is room for the heat exchanger. You may not be able to move enough air to heat even though you can move enough in the current ducts to cool sufficiently. It may not be practical for those considerations. If cost is no object, you might be able to add radiant heat to the floors via a steam to water heat exchanger with an associated circulator pump and expansion tank. You may be able to find a contractor on a forum that has a lot of "steam heads" posting. Try heatinghelp.com and terry love.com.

Stoney...they have one of those planes at Offutt Airforce Base in Omaha...

For some reason they fly it all the time. It goes over the park where my husband works to make a mock landing at the airport in Omaha . It doesn't touch the ground but almost then goes back up and on it's way.

When it goes over the park, which sets on the opposite side of the Missouri river from the airport, it is very very low. It nearly parts the waters as it goes over. Quite a site to see.

There is a deck out there that you can sit on and watch the planes come in. You can almost count the rivets...lol

I want to try to get a picture some day.

Denny explained to me why they fly that huge plane in and out all the time with no one on it...but I can't remember ....lol

I wonder if it is a c-135, Patti - those are huge!

That was the plane they used for Looking Glass, which was based out of Offut, but that was discontinued in the early '90s.

Have you ever gone to the Air Show at Offut? Pretty cool!

Talk about wasting fuel. Patti, I've seen that plane flying around and around for years. I used to see it all the time, when I'd leave work, (it'd be flying overhead) and drive home. Around and around, over my house, over Omaha, back around over my house, for at least 2 or 3 hours. Maybe they are in a practice run.

Neat! My daughters best friend got to take a tour of it once when the President was in our area. A relative of hers is one of the workers on the plane and he was aloud to have a few guest on to view it while it sat at the airport.

That's sooooo cool...I would love to have seen that....I once had the space shuttle piggyback plane over my house...It seemed like I could reach up and touch it...It was landing for an overnight at Brooks or Barksdale...can't remember which...
