gm folks ,

i love working in the greenhouse this time of year . its almost like being in south florida in jeri's back yard . except no plam trees lol lol lol i took a few pics yesterday , i hope you enjoy !!!!!

this section of cuttings is almost rooted , soon to be trasplanted to 4 inch cups . i never buy in cuttings , i always start my own .

i have shelving units running the length of the greenhouse , they are all over 6 ft off the ground . one can easily walk under them . these shelves allows me to grow in the upper, hotter part of the greenhouse .

Some thoughts on two projects: One: What is the most practical path from the point of origin at the house to get to your dock -- the path you now use ? Would that path begin at the corner of the house closest to the yard toys -- either a straight or curved path -- until you get to the toys and then from the toys beyond them to the dock? That walk path is where you should begin to create dirt steps about 4'-6' wide by using railroad ties strategically placed across the path as temporary small retaining walls to create level or gently sloping "steps" between the rail road ties -- digging to throw dirt above or below the railroad ties as needed. As you walk, you might take two or three steps on each dirt step you create. As you use the dirt steps you can see what steps work best and what steps need to be adjusted before you invest in blocks or stone for more permanent retaining walls for your grass covered dirt steps). Two: you might consider putting a retaining wall all along the lower point of the yard where you usually cease to mow -- below the hill. Literally dig a deep ditch for a footing/foundation along that line above which you cannot safely mow. You could then put rebar in place and have concrete poured into the ditch (BEFORE before you remove the dirt from below the ditch/concrete wall so the sides of the ditch can serve as a form for your retaining wall) -- before you throw any that dirt from below the ditch to above it. Once your poured concrete has set up, you can add a bock wall atop it, then begin to remove the dirt from below the concrete retaining wall to above the concrete retaining wall, adding other layers of concrete blocks to the wall as you are able to reach it from either above or below until you've achieved a reasonably level area both above and below the wall. You could then face the poured concrete with stone or brick if you choose.. DO make sure the bottom of the ditch you dig is lower that the ground level you want for the lower flatter area below the poured concrete retaining wall.. A ditch dug with a back hoe or other equipment will be wider that what you might dig by hand and take more concrete to fill but with the wider concrete wall you're pouring, you're building strength into your retaining wall. Do post some after pics to show us what you've done.

It looks like a fence and the neighbor has a hedge. Who has the arborvitae? But yes, you can stick a bush in it. You will have to move the pots, the rhubarb, the green hosta and give up some lawn to do it. Now a close city location is needed for appropriate plant suggestions. Your snow picture says the right selection of Yew might be what you need.

Concrete stain can really improve the look of concrete flooring. But you have to make sure your concrete is not already sealed. Since your concrete surrounds a pool it's possibly already sealed, and that sealer would have to be removed first. Below is a photo of unsealed (left) and sealed concrete that just had water poured on it. Hopefully you can see how it beads up on the sealed concrete. As to furniture around this pool, it's easier to fit chairs and loveseats into tight spaces. Outdoor furniture is often smaller than indoor furniture. Most indoor loveseats measure 3' deep x 5' wide. Sofas start around 7' wide. An outdoor loveseat may be as small as 2.5' x 4'. Nonetheless, your space doesn't seem that small. I think you should measure the area across each end from house to outside wall and from the pool edge to the outside end wall. Draw those measurements onto paper so that 1' equals 1" on paper. On another piece of paper draw the outlines of any furniture pieces you have or want to buy to the same 1' equals 1". Take a tape measure with you when shopping in case the size of furniture is not listed. Most online outlets will list sizes. Label each furniture piece and cut it out. Now you can move the pieces around to get the best fit and use of your space, but remember that where people walk there should be 42" or more width, but 36" to enter a seating area is OK. It would be great to find a tall cabinet to hold tools and chemicals for the pool, but most I've seen are under 6'. In the meantime, a folding screen could work to hide those items. Larger pots don't dry out quickly and are less likely to get knocked over, but terracotta pots get really heavy. In addition to plastic there are fiberglass and resin planters which can look like terracotta, glazed porcelain, wood, stone and metal. Here are some resin planters. Annual plants are the easiest to take care of and provide lots of color. If your winter is mild you can use cool season annuals, like snapdragons, pansies, pinks and sweet alyssum, to fill pots from late fall until mid spring.

Bamboo IS a grass....just a very tall growing type. Although it's never smelled like a lawn or turf grass to me, I guess it's possible. Tell him to take a shower :-)

lucy , link? not sure what you are asking for . these are pics in greenhouse . have you looked in your area for succulents ? i think you should be able to find most of these plants locally , could be cheaper for you . after all no shipping $$$$. if you are looking for certain ones , just let me know .

theresa , not really sure !!!lol lol i think its 125 ft long , maybe 28 or 32 ft wide , and its probally 15 ft tall or taller . in the 11th pic is a step ladder , its 8 ft tall , thats how i water the upper shelves . that should give you a good idea on size .

I LOVE the Varigated Agave. SO Pretty. DO you mind me asking where I could find a few succlent seeds? My daughter is 12 and they are her favorite but I dont have any except mother of Thousands so far. If you dont mind telling. Your GH is Amazing. I just love it.Brandy

I really like the plant in the first pic. What is it? I enjoy working in the greenhouses over the winter but to me it doesn't compare with being able to work outside. Besides that the big GH is too much work and Rolando can't stand when I'm in there messing around in "his territory". lol

Picture # 15 The succulent with long flat leave. I have 2 that looks like it one has the same marks on it.
The other is solid green. I think one is called "donkey ears" What is the name of yours???
Picture # 16 the plant with the large round leaves with the red around the edges. What is that one called???

Eddie...do you ever have to battle any particular pests? How about pesky gnats? I can imagine with your huge greenhouse you really must have to keep them in check! Any particular secrets you could share to keep the pests at bay?

Thank you for sharing your oasis with us. It is beautiful.

You also solved a couple of problems for me. I have been promised a GH (much smaller of course) this year. I've been trying to plan the layout but was having problems with the hanging pots and the larger plants. Your raised shelves solve both problems!

Eddie, Im not really sure. I know she saw living stones and thought they were neat. The place we saw them at was ridiculous on prices. I can place what ever I find in either full sun which would probably be best or I have a little part sun area still left. I think I would like something that multiplies so they can pot up there extras and give to their friends as gifts. I try to teach them you dont need lavish stuff sometimes the simple things can be much better and bring a real smile.

living in zone 8 you have lots of options . most succy's clump fast so these should be easy to propagate and share . these types of plants should be easy to grow , just keep in mind , NEGLECT them and they will be ok .

orostachys are great succy's that clump fast , flower every year and add tons of color .

sempervivums are also another great choose , super easy plants to grow !!!!! lots of color and sizes to choose from .

echeveria adds size and color . not all of the echeveria are hardy. keep an eye out for topsy turvy and lola . i'm sure there is more , but these two do very well in my zone 7 -7b winters .

sedums are great , from plump little guys , creepers and uprights. drought tolerant and a variety of flower colors .

the raised shelves do great for me . keep in mind they do produce shade . i also support mine form the ground , not from greenhouse frame , because of weight .

i really do not have a bug problem . i do spray every 2-3 weeks with liquid sevin, also use tons of snail bait and bomb the greenhouse at least twice a season . i try to stop teh problem before it beggins.

the spotted one in pic 15 is kalanchoe gastonis-bonner.
the red tipped one in pic 16 is kalanchoe luciae

i use regular miracle grow mix. sand tends to hold too much moisture in the winter for my taste .

gastrolea 'Green Ice' is not a common plant . i did see it one ebay for 29 bucks a pup . it takes more after the gasteria , than the aloe . the leaves are hard and not flexable .

My 13 year old son has a little collection---over the years I always let him pick out one plant from the nursery when he was with me. Sean has a little collection of sedums, blue agave, a couple small barrel cactus, and a yucca. Seems like he always went to the succulents when given the choice. My gardener buddy... :)

at my local market i noticed , its mostly men and boys that stops and looks at the cacti sellection . even after i tell them not to touch the thorns , they always do .lol lol lol do we ever grow up ? lol lol

susan , jeri is very way behind on water marking epi pics. i think all of those have to be protected before i can post them . the website is killing her lol lol so glad i'm stuck way up here , and not in south florida behind a computer screen helping .lol lol lol

Edie...Funny story...last summer, Sean had some buddies over for a swim. His friends know where Sean's plant collection is--grouped together near the house by the pool. One of the guys decided to be a smart a--, and grabbed one of the smaller cacti in a pot and yelled to another guy in the pool, "let's play keep away from Sean...". Now mind you, these were all baseball players with pretty good arms... One of the other 'new' guys said "hey..throw it here" (he was in the pool-not knowing what kind of plant it was). Sean just stood there shaking his head and told them I don't think you want to do that...the kid threw the plant to the other kid, and he caught it mid-air about 30 feet away---along with a handful of thorns!!! OUCH!!!! I'll never forget the scream! Sean said "they'll never touch my plants again!!!"

Yes, boys will be boys...

Summer really liked #1 and 2 the flowering Sempervivums. OF couse the weird looking agaves. I will keep checking around here but we only have one or 2 plant shops here that would have those plants besides maybe Lowes. Those Plants shops are selling GOLD LOL. I havent ever found any seeds for them anywhere though. Brandy
