anyone tried angies list??

We moved to a new city and I need recommendations for good docs and dentists and I was going to check angies list but see that there is a fee to join. Its not expensive but I just thought I would check here with all of you helpful friends to see if anyone had any experience with it.

Actually I joined Angies List for one year and found it worth my while. i used it to find a carpet shampooer and a handyman and a manicure salon. . At 20 or 30 bucks a year twoor three referrals /recommendations seems worth it. But you'll have to consider the cost vs. how much use you'll get. Medical professionals seem worth it. However, I did not use Angies for finding my doctor and dentist. those I've had for many years and have used frequently. We have relatioinships based on trust and good health outcomes. Not sure I'd trust AL for that purpose. Hope others will respond.

I've looked at angie's list, too but figured word-of-mouth and using my own research resources (google!) would be just as effective.

I know you can read reviews and recommendations via google. Our family pohysician is rated, and I added a glowing review after he took care of my son Easter weekend.

Perhaps ask co-workers or any neighbor you have met already and see if they can be of some assistance. Even chatting with someone in the grocery line could give you some good information.

Another PIA for sure. I've had challenges with having to sign in after every post, missing scrollbars, pop ups, and slow loading pages. I get the ads for revenue but I'd rather pay to post like some have mentioned. If we have to have the ads so be it I guess. Just wish the pages loaded faster like they use to....with or without all the ads. : ) David

live in the area between Dallas and FTW--more referrals for some types of companies are for the Dallas area --Fort Worth was more recent addition to the list and with Angie's list there is no guarantee that the person/company you choose will be the cheapest--there is no way to price-check a bid except by getting more than one have been Angie's List member about 3 yrs--found a good electrician and a plumber who saved me over $500 when my water heater needed to be replaced--did a great job and because it was a retrofit it was difficult to bring it up to code... we found the guy who painted the interior and did some other work at house we bought last year and he is doing remodeling for older one we are getting ready to put on the market--he does not have a web-site and is a smaller operation but has a real desire to do a good job the gutters for that house are being replaced by company from the list-- we had the motor on the security gate for our new house replaced by company from the list as well and got some bids for landscaping--they were really higher than we wanted to pay but frankly the job probably would have been better done if we had used one of them then our regular yard guy when we had our old house re-roofed I should have used someone from the list but went with another roofer that a friend recommended--her job was done well--think ours with a different salesman/agent was not so well-done... I think most of the reviews are really from people who have used the list--not like Apartment search reviews on something like Google which are often from other apt people-- but like anything--there is no guarantee that your choice will be perfect what I like about the Angie's pages is that there is usually a link to BBB site so you can read about the company--which is helpful to me... I just wish there was some way to contact posters about the longevity of the job--did it hold up--how were later problems handled-- that is where quality comes into play...

Just this morning I read this posting about Angie's list. "Scrappy25" was responding to a question in the kitchen forum about how to divide a specific amount of money over a number of projects. I was suprised to read that she was able to hire skilled services/workers such as electricians or plumbers by the hour. You know many companies are not interested in little jobs and I thought this was quite a clever way to research and obtain competitive bids from quality professionals. Nice way to "button-up" loose ends of a big project. Very interesting and definitely a "sign of the times" demonstrating the power of this computer/social networking era we are in! Very, very interesting..... SCRAPPY 25 WROTE: "A 90's kitchen is probably still pretty functional. You should live with it a bit first to figure out how the layout works and what your storage issues are. If the layout is good, can you paint rather than refacing your cabinets? There are some amazing transformations with paint on this site. It sounds like you can do all your kitchen plans in four independent steps (cabinet doors/drawers for functionality, countertop/sink/faucet/backsplash, and then separately paint and flooring. Taking it one step at a time will make it much more manageable, expecially if your kitchen is out of commission only for up to a week at a time. As to the rest of the house, I have had really good luck with the Angies list Big Deals, if they are offered in your area. The discounts are often not as great as advertised because the "retail" prices seem inflated,but in the end I have paid middle to low prices for uniformly good work, no complaints about that! Most recently I purchased 4 hours of masonry work to re-parge some side of the concrete foundation of my house ($99), 4 recessed lights installed with dimmer from an electrician for $399, electrician services for 2 hours for $99, and 2 painters for a day (8 hours each) for $399. You do have to read the fine print carefully and I find that it is best if I email the providers prior to the service with a detailed list of what I want done and/or pictures so that there are no surprises. They are sort of like Groupon deals that are only offered for a few days, but the companies have to be A or B rated on Angies list to be able to offer them. Also, they know that you will probably be rating their work on Angies list so there is accountability. I am not affiliated with Angies list other than being a customer.The Bid Deals help me to knock out my "to do" list and also gives me exposure to professionals that I can call back for further work when needed. hope that helps." To find the rates for Angies List: Start at the Angies List home page. Select "FAQ". The next page asks for your zip code before it will take you to the FAQ. On the FAQ, click on "Is there a membership fee?" On the next page, click on "View membership fees here." Finally they should show you the membership fees for your area. Fees vary by where you live, so that's why they ask for your zip code. Presumably in cities where they have more reviews, they charge more. In cities where they're still trying to build up membership, they charge less. I think it's obnoxious that they bury the membership costs so deep. Also, be aware that they will automatically renew your membership in a year if you give them a credit card number. And that the renewal rates can be higher than the rate for joining new. I've used Angies List to look up businesses from time to time, but Angies List's own policies seem a little anti-consumer to me, so I'm thinking of canceling my membership right before it renews again.

The guy that ran off with my $8,000 for my roof....I am going to join and post about him. The only reason I am holding back is my best friend who reccommended him gave me the money back and is getting him to sign a note to pay her back, and he hasn't done it yet. He is her husband's best friend and she reccommended him to the highest degree and he was absolutely sorry with everything he touched.

I did get my roof and it is an excellent job and I will be happy to reccommend the guy who did it.

I tried it a few years back when they gave me a free one year subscription. I had just moved to this state and was trying to look up an air conditioner guy. After that, they started calling and emailing me to try to get comments. It totally turned me off. Angie's list was apparently fairly new at that time. The info that had been provided wasn't enough. I didn't appreciate the hassle.

It's annoying when people don't follow through. I don't think I'd pay for a site like that because I live in a small town. It may be worth it in a big city and you plan to have a lot of work done.

I'm still waiting for the paint guy to come paint my house. A friend from work recommended her husband last year. He kept putting me off and finally it got too cold for me to open the windows and air the house out so I told him it would have to wait till Spring. Well, I'm still waiting. She told me three weeks ago he would come in a couple of days and start. Then last week I worked and she told me he would start tomorrow after he called and came over with the price of the paint and for my house key. Well, I still haven't heard from them.

I started painting last week and am going to get another gallon of paint to finish that room, at least the walls. Still have to buy paint for the trim and closet.

I've used it and I found it to be well worth the money. I haven't used it to find healthcare professionals however. I like to get insider recommendations for that kind of thing - from people who work in the field - and fortunately I know quite a few people who do. I'm not so sure how a lay person knows if their dentist does quality dentistry for example.

I always have asked my previous doctor to recommend someone for where I am moving. They can check out who practices there, their education and sometimes they know them personally.
