Angie's List? Worth it?
Comments (11)I'm a true believer in having a good (excellent) handyman that you know well for most stuff around the house. Our house sorta came with it's own handyman. He's been doing all the work at all of the houses on our penninsula for about 15 years. When we moved in our neighbor gave us his card & we've used him ever since. He's a bit of a strange duck though & not everybody could/would tolerate his quirks, I think. For instance, he won't give you any type quote except for materials & then he brings you all the receipts as soon as he purchases materials. The first job he did for us I asked, "How much?" He said, "As much as you think it's worth & don't ever ask me that question again." He just finished residing our entire house & repainting the trim in October. Also had new gutters installed. We had horizontal cedar siding & I've always wanted cedar Nantucket-style shingles. Since builing costs are lower now & the house needed at the minimum painting we decided to get some quotes. We ran those quotes by our handyman & he said, "You wouldn't have to pay me as much. You'll still need to get somebody else to do the gutters." So, he got the job. Anyway, he did it all with one helper. Our handyman HATES to paint. His helper was his neighbor who happens to be an artist, a portrait artist, working mostly with athletes. So, our paint job on the trim is VERY good. :) They found & corrected some rot using materials he had just laying around & said not to bother paying him for them 'cause they were in his way at home anyway. What's really odd is that he's a nuclear submarine training simulator designer/engineer in his real life. He just does handyman work 'cause he likes construction. So, we have to be patient & let him work on his schedule, not always ours. Anyway, if you can, find a really good handyman & then you've always got somebody to call when something bad happens at 2:00 a.m. Saturday night. Here's the guy that painted our trim. /tricia Here is a link that might be useful: Portraits by Dennis...See MoreAngie's List
Comments (29)I have only provided reviews for angie's list, and have never actually used a contractor from them (usually b/c I end up hiring a person that a friend or neighbor has used) Have been a member for about 6 years. My concern is like others. I have wanted to write 2 negative reviews, but I fear retaliation from the two companies I want to write about ( bathroom contractor and doctor). Especially, if there are not any other negative reviews written, it is hard to be the first. It would be very easy for the provider to figure out who wrote the negative review. I wonder what safegaurds Angie's List has in place to protect users from their reviews? In the meantime, I take all reviews across Angie's with a grain of salt. I have stopped writing reviews b/c after doing a search with for a service, Anige's List sends an email to ask me to write a review. I am tired of getting so many emails from Angie's List and find their business model has changed over the year ( not for the positive) I used to find their magazine enjoyable and helpful to read, but lately it seems like the main feature is promoting some type of business, instead of consumer issues....See Moreanyone tried angies list??
Comments (9)It's annoying when people don't follow through. I don't think I'd pay for a site like that because I live in a small town. It may be worth it in a big city and you plan to have a lot of work done. I'm still waiting for the paint guy to come paint my house. A friend from work recommended her husband last year. He kept putting me off and finally it got too cold for me to open the windows and air the house out so I told him it would have to wait till Spring. Well, I'm still waiting. She told me three weeks ago he would come in a couple of days and start. Then last week I worked and she told me he would start tomorrow after he called and came over with the price of the paint and for my house key. Well, I still haven't heard from them. I started painting last week and am going to get another gallon of paint to finish that room, at least the walls. Still have to buy paint for the trim and closet....See MoreHas anyone here used Angie's List?
Comments (27)I'm in the Boston area and I have used it successfully. they have raised their prices. You can just try the one month trial, and get the names of three people to start, and if it works well for you and you need a lot of work, go for a year. The list is uneven, in that sometimes they have no/little info for what you are looking for or a company you want to use isn't there, but everyone I have used from there has been really good, so I continue to find it valuable. It also helps to fill out reports to make it better. However, I have not put in a VERY negative report of a company not listed because I was worried about them suing me, Angie's LIst doesn't protect you from that. I have used: Yard clean up painters chimney sweep/liner mechanic locksmith roofer all with excellent results....See Moregabbythecat
