Yes! Adblock Plus in Firefox isn't stopping it!
In Safari I have an extension called "Click to Flash" that prevents flash content from loading automatically, so it appears as a blank gray banner, but it's still there.
The last few days I had trouble signing in, and now this. Ugh indeed.

There's a warning on the Macintouch website. Note that it is Adobe, the company that makes Flash, warning about its own product:

With adblocker, there is a 'block' tab sitting on top of the ad - click on that and add it as a filter. Might only work for Angie's List.

Yep, the block tab does work with Firefox. What a pain!

To the right of the red ABP icon, there's an arrow for a drop-down menu. Choose "open blockable items." Scroll through them until you see the two that say "Angie's list." Double-click on each one to bring up the box that has the "add filter" button. And voila! Angie is gone.

I have noticed a blank white bar at the bottom for a few days.
I have been having alot of problems signing in and posting for a long time on both my Macs. Now I know why.

Currently I have Firefox Flashbock which is blocking the ad-I have the gray bar.

I'm getting it too. So now we have ads at the top of the page, more at the side, and now one at the bottom, plus pop-ups seemingly at random. I wonder if they could possibly cram another advertisement anywhere on any of the pages, geez.

Nope, no support to Angie's List from me either, and like Jessica, they're going to get a nasty email from me.

The little AdBlock "block" box shows if you scroll over the ad, upper right hand side. Click on that to block, follow instructions form there. They gray bar went away when I refreshed. I hope it stays that way! How annoying!

Why does GW have to pull all this crap or accept this type of advertising? None of the other major sites I visit are so intrusive.

I want the option to pay to play to come back!I am going to email Tamara and see if that helps.

My other option is to not visit GW anymore. Sad.

They'd have to fix the character-encoding problem. This site no longer works well enough to pay for.
Why did that problem appear, when we didn't have it for years? And just now, a fix that usually works for me didn't. Usually, if I saw in the message preview that a funny character has appeared in my own post, I could change the encoding and make it show correctly on the thread. But I couldn't fix "saut�" in the ratatouille thread.

Very distracting. Nothing but Ads; top, sides and now bottom.

Hope this gets fixed soon.

Shaun, do you have Adblock Plus or one of the other blocking extensions? I usually don't see any ads at all on this site.

The NBC sale to Comcast finally closed a couple months ago. So, I guess it's not surprising that Comcast has plastered GW with ads. I doubt "pay to play" will get much attention. These advertisers are paying millions for the right to irritate us. Our $15/membership fees wouldn't begin to replace the ad income GW is now generating.

I did have everything blocked but now it seems as if every block is counter-acted with another type of intrusive ad. I could spend hours dealing with this stuff.

What is really bothersome is a new banner every time I click to a thread or area. Enter discussions. Banner. Move to conversations. Banner. Click on this thread. Banner.

My only recourse is to boycott every advertiser. I refuse to buy products or patronize any of these companies.

Carol, you can block the banners permanently if you have Adblock Plus; see my post above.

Thanks, Cloudy. I have used Adblock in the past and liked it. I just got a new computer and the ad-blocking was on the bottom of the list of things to do, but with this frustration, I'm moving it up the list.

I keep coming back to see if there is a "fix" for this. I did write to Angie's List and told them their ad was obnoxious.

I'm using Firefox and getting it too. It is way too intrusive. I have to close it every single time I try and go to a thread.

It covers up the bottom half of what is on my screen. This one is so annoying I'll never use Angie's list as long as I live....do you suppose that was the intended result? Big mistake

It's very persistent, it's driving me nuts with every page change. I was never interested in Angie's List, too expensive, but this pretty much guarantees I'll never join if this is how they spend the money.

The strange thing is.....I get the ad here on this forum (I'm on Firefox) but I don't get the ad when I go to my quilting forum on the GW? Hmmmm?

I get the feeling that the GW is determined to drive us all away?

Another PIA for sure. I've had challenges with having to sign in after every post, missing scrollbars, pop ups, and slow loading pages. I get the ads for revenue but I'd rather pay to post like some have mentioned. If we have to have the ads so be it I guess. Just wish the pages loaded faster like they use to....with or without all the ads. : )

I'd much rather pay to post than to deal with these annoyances! At no time do I ever click on one of them, or knowingly buy from one of the advertisers.

Thanks Helene/Sushipup for the tip of rolling the curser over the add to make the block come up. I didn't see it when I tried Christine's ABP drop down menu. A pain for sure! Lately I can't sign in from my work computer at all. I guess it's because I'm supposed to be working!
