lol I knew there would be a thread somewhere. WTH is going on? I also use Firefox with AdBlock Plus (or whatever it's named). Does Angie's List honestly expect someone to want to use them when they do this?!

I went to the angies list site and e-mailed them about how intrusive it is.

graywings what browser are you using? I use Chrome and the ad was making me nuts this morning so I went to CNet to see if there's an Adblock extension for Chrome and there is. Works like a charm. There's probably an option for you and any browser you use.

IT is driving me crazy! I am going to try the google chrome blocker.

I use firefox and just added it to the filters on ad block. This is an add on you should have, if not get it.

If you are using Firefox with Adblock and Easylist filters, you can get rid of the ad. There is a small extension on the top right half of the ad, similar to a file tab and says Block on it. It is not always easy to see. When you find the tab, click it. A window appears. Select the button to add to the filter. Close your browser and reopen it.

Thank you, camp56. I had to roll over the actual part that said Angie's List to find the tab, but then I was able to add it to the filter just as you described!

OMIGOSH! Thank you for this post...I didn't know about adblocker - I just installed it and it is amazing! On one of my email accounts there is an ad (one of many) that does this really annoying hopping action that makes me feel like it's going to give my brain a seizure. So glad to be done with that!

I just canceled my membership. These types of ads are just too annoying but what is worse, to me, is that there is no way to go into your account info on their website and cancel. There isn't even a message that says send us an email to cancel. I sent a message and they da*n well better not charge me again! Can you tell this sort of thing makes me mad? LOL!

I don't mind the side ads, but anything in my field of vision has to go.

A story about Angie's List. I got a freebie trial for a year when they were new to this area. So I was heading out of town, afternoon before got an oil change (quickie place, not dealer). They bunged up the transmission (forget details now but would have stopped me from making that trip). Reimbursed my money and were trying to get me to head to their 'transmission guy'. No way! A girl customer who overheard that fiasco gave me her ex BFs card, said if he couldn't help me he had friends who could. He did body work but sent me to his friend. Sweetest, kindest mechanic I've ever met. Got there at closing time on Friday evening. Still, he stayed, fixed it, and wasn't going to charge me. (I gave him money anyway.) I also gave him highest rec on Angie's List.

I bumped into him a few months later. He's very laid back so didn't complain, but the poor guy had since been flooded with snail mail solicitations from AL to join and IIRC he said their fees for business owners were astronomical. He was appreciative of the review, but he was small & just starting out then so had to watch every penny. But we were both kind of surprised they'd solicit business owners that way, seems that would create bias to some extent? I didn't renew when my freebie subscription ran out, but to this day they've not stopped soliciting heavily, even after multiple requests from me to unsubscribe from their list. Aside from having "paid" members in the business community, it's pretty annoying the way they hound people incessantly, a total turn off imho.

Unfortunately I think Angie's List has just become a money maker - not necessarily for the businesses that are listed, but for the owner's of A.L.

Since there's no way to verify the complaints or compliments I think the ratings provided are worthless. I'd never use it.

I also hate the angie's list TV ads. They are truly annoying. Especially the one about the plumber who walked the stupid homeowner's dog because the homeowner didn't have the good sense or manners to come home on time.

That commercial really irks me...what about all the times the plumber is not there? She shouldn't have a dog.

Well, I guess I never said "Angies List" so I can see the confusion.

Anyway, that is the worst commercial. Is it actually based on a real review? If so, that woman needs to have her dog taken away. And why would the plumber be embarrassed to walk a little dog?

TWO clicks and that ad was GONE...as are ALL the other ads on GW.
The Adblock-Plus filter is truly a gem. Then you "subscribe" to their filter list. It updates every so often.
I finally took the Firefox jump after getting a tutorial in the "Computer help" forum here. Very smart/helpful people on that forum!

Have not seen an ad/pop-up/pop-under on GW since I got Firefox. If I can do this...ANYONE can!! LOL

I removed adblock plus just now because it was playing havoc with sites I was going to and wasn't solving all of my problem here. But it appears that Gardenweb came to its senses and has taken down the offensive ad.

To Angie's List credit, they replied within an hour to the complaint I sent yesterday:

Thanks for writing. I'm very sorry for any inconvenience. I would encourage you to contact GardenWeb directly, though, with your concern. They will have more direct control over how advertising shows up on their page. That is, whether they employ sidebar ads or ones in their header, or have ads popup at the bottom of the page as this ad appears to be doing. I have, though, forwarded your concern to our Marketing Department so that they can be aware of the problems such advertising may cause and take any action they can in changing the form it takes on this website.
