Finished basement decorating - need help quick!

Hi everyone,

We thought we were taking a break from the remodeling and decorating for a while, but our plumbing had other ideas. Our main waste pipe sprung a leak in the wall of our finished basement, contaminating the walls and carpet with sewage. Yuck.

The clean up is finished (yay) but we've got to get new carpet and replace part of a wall and paint. I need to pick new carpet and paint color pretty quickly, and I'm kind of at a loss because I hadn't been thinking about it. (I usually plan and scheme for a remodeling project for months if not years.) We want to stick with carpet because we use half of the space as a playroom for my daughter and the other half as a comfy living space.

I feel like this is our big chance to make this space look good and I don't want to screw it up! Right now the carpet is a hideous dark green and the walls are off white (the POs had very different taste from mine). I want it to look warm and "finished". We had just bought dark brown furniture (which thankfully was far away from the "incident"), so that's staying. We do have some natural light in there from a few small windows, but like most basements, light is somewhat of an issue.

To give you an idea of my taste, some of the other colors I have throughout my house are Lenox tan, Pittsfield Buff, and others in the brown/gold family. I love green too - my kitchen is Grecian Green (I've had a green kitchen in every house I've lived in). There are lots of large expanses of wall in the basement, so I don't want anything too dark or overwhelming. And I'm really stuck on the carpet. Can anyone help me please? Thanks in advance!

What a mess! Been there at a different house.

If you have the chance to improve the lighting do so. Can lights and sconces all with dimmers can make the space.

Our basement is a basic one, no English or walk-out. We finished it with many functional areas within a greatroom concept. To set them apart we used different wall colors and hung colorful prints on the white walls. May not be your taste but the main rooms of our home are rather formal and we wanted the basement to be a very comfortable place to relax.

Look for a brown-toned wall-to-wall carpeting -- perhaps even check out industrial carpeting? Very neutral -- and will work well with your furniture ......

Then put in your furniture along with the tables and lamps (oil rubbed bronze? - just a thought!) Look again around the room in all lights .... perhaps consider track lighting?

Perhaps a pale gold on the walls? (light but still warm?) Maybe Laura Ashley Gold #2 or #3? (available at Lowes)

THEN add your accent colors like olive or sage or oregano green; dark roasted pumpkin, dark barn red etc. in artworks (posters, prints etc.) or cushions (how about floor cushions?) How about adding a couple of large bulletin boards for the kids' artworks?

Just some thoughts!

ivparker - Our stairway actually has a 180 degree turn at a landing mid-flight and that is where we installed the glass door. The builder had a solid one which opened into the main hallway at the very top and it was both an obsticle and a hazard. As to no door, guess that is an option. We have a dog who considers the basement to be her "apartment" and we need a door to confine her so as to not set off motion detectors if the security system is armed. Door remains open unless she is confined. I can't answer your question about mastic with click install planks. Those are considered floating floors and have a foam pad on which they rest. One of our sons has a townhouse with a slab (concrete) first floor upon which a previous owner installed a floating floor. It sounds really cheap (hollow). I suggest speaking with a specialty flooring company about their products. The Big Box stores sell "low hanging fruit" and often their staff are lacking in knowledge to answer a question like you will have. I hear you on changing styles. If you do something trendy, it will soon look dated. Nature doesn't change though so if you choose a natural look, most likely you will be safe for much longer. There are natural-looking ceramic which look like stone tiles. When we updated one of our bathrooms our tile install was overall less costly with real stone vs ceramic because the installer was able to make the baseboard tiles rather than our having to purchase very costly bull nosed ones. And only a 1/32 grout line vs. maybe a quarter inch. All I can say is we had two sons and now two grandchildren and I can tell you that drywall (even greenboard) will not last even 5 years with the abuse kids will inflict so you'll still be $$$'s ahead if, after 15 years, you decide to replace dated tiles. I know gray isn't your color scheme but here is a photo of the bath we updated about two years ago using marble tile. This bath only required about 35 sq. ft. and I believe the tile were only about $10 each and installer labor was the same for stone or ceramic but we basically got the baseboard (which we wanted) at no cost by using waste pieces and cutting/polishing them on-the-job. Just my opinions though and perhaps you would rather redecorate more often, which tile does make difficult.

Obviously a walk-out slab is at grade and not considered a basement at that building face so along the exposed slab edge it must have the under slab vertical insulation required in the Prescriptive Path chart of the IECC (if that is the compliance Path selected and assuming the slab is not heated. The IECC does not require insulation under a full basement slab because the heat lost to cold outside air is usually much greater than the heat lost to the earth below a basement slab. The rate of temperature loss through a material is proportional to the temperature difference between the surfaces. The temperature of the earth below a basement slab is permanently a bit warner than the temperature of well water which varies in the US from about 43 to 73 degrees. If the design temperature of the basement air is 70 degrees the temperature difference would vary from about 27 to 3 degrees. Therefore under slab insulation might be cost effective in North Dakota but not so much south of Kansas and Kentucky. In Michigan the difference would be about 20 degrees so insulation under a slab would be modestly cost effective and would also decrease condensation so R-5 (1" extruded polystyrene) should be adequate but if the price is right, 2" XPS can't hurt.

Nice room! My personal choice would be a bit different from yours. I'd do a mid-toned LVT throughout the entire area, and use a nice patterned area rug on top in the rec area, and a coordinating runner going up the stairs.

Do you really want carpet or would a good tile work just as well?

I absolutely adore my new smartstrand by mohawk carpet (you can get it for ~$2.00/sqft at home depot right now). That being said, I'd agree with Patricia - if your home is prone to problems with sewage/plumbing/leaks perhaps a tile with nice rugs is better. I've also heard carpet tiles are a great option in the basement so it's easy to change out

We really, really want carpet. (Although I may come back asking about tile when we update the other part of our basement with the walkout - eventually want that to be more of a "mudroom" since it has the walkout and open stairs up to the kitchen - it's really separate from this part of the basement though)

Thanks for your thoughts Jan. I thought about gold too, but wasn't sure how it would look with the furniture. Your descriptions sounds like my style though.

I should clarify about the lighting - we have tons of recessed lighting down there. I don't think that needs any improvement (or really could be improved). However, I still think no matter how much lighting you have a basement is always going to have a darker or at least different feel because there is not much natural light, and I want to factor that into our decisions.

Keep the ideas coming please! Any pictures anyone has to share are greatly appreciated! :-)

Thanks vivachick - I missed your message before. I've heard of the smartstrand on the flooring forum just now, but need to look into it more. What does smartstrand mean?

We have a generally very dry basement. No basement smells, nothing. Never had a problem until this freak accident (a joint gave way in the plumbing), so I'm really not concerned about water issues. Especially since when everything was cleaned up, the only places that were yucky were the places where the leak had happened, so there had not been any previous leaks/seepage etc.
I think tile is too cold and hard for our basement - we live in the Northeast and it's cold up here!

We just finished a room in our basement and we used a carpet (which I have linked for you) called Panama Canal from Blue Planet. It is industrial and we had it cut to "almost" go wall to wall. We painted a concrete floor underneath and laid the carpet on top.
It is absolutely beautiful. I can't tell you how many compliments we have gotten on it. It would go beautifully with your color furniture.
