BEAUTIFUL!!! It will be something for them to treasure and pass down to their kids! Special made treasures are the BEST! Especially when it is made with such love.

My father made a cradle when we were expecting our first. It is now up in the attic, but about to come down to be spiffed up a bit before it goes onto OUR grandbaby. He also made my kids a rocking horse and a rocking chair that will be used by my grands....not sure if I will let those go to their homes, or they will stay here. :)

Thanks for all the compliments. I rated it 65-70 not to be overly modest; it's just because of the great respect for Norm and the way he builds things. He is a woodworking god to me! He'd have dovetailed the drawers and turned the legs on a lathe.

However: I don't have a shop. I don't have a basement. I don't have a garage. I also don't have $20,000 worth of tools. What I do have is a back yard & a picnic table. I also have intermittent rain storms which slows the process down just a bit.

My GF's DH and I made an oak cradle before my oldest DGS Hunter (age 9) was born. I signed it on the bottom that it was made for my future grandchildren and beyond. All my GB's have used it so far (only 3) and it is here waiting for the next baby....which I hope will be soon, but no one is expecting!

I bought a hand made simple cradle four our first child. My friend showed me the one she had bought from some little old man who made them. They were dark pine, and so was our nursery set, and so I bought one too and used it for our three children.

Our first grandchild was born into a 2 bedroom condo too far away and too crowded for the cradle to fit, but his brother was born an hour away and into a larger house that could accommodate it. DD has loved having the family cradle, and I have loved getting it out of my guest room finally!

It's just beautiful, and thoughtful and will will have enormous meaning to your daughter (and future users).

beeohio - Unlike Norm I am restricted to the species carried by my local Lowes or Home Depot - pine, maple and oak. It's oak, although it looks somewhat cherry-like in the photos. It's a good wood to work with although those oak splinters hurt like hell and are so tiny you can hardly see them!

Remember to sign and date, it, and write the babies name and birthdate also, We have a cradle that all 3 of our boys used and many nieces, nephews, and friends children and is now being used by our grandsaughter, we have written all the childrens names and Bdates on the bottom, it is fun looking back,,,,

Well, Norm does set the bar pretty high, but even unfinished I'm going to give this a 95, Softball. It looks wonderful!

How about woodburning your name and pertinent details into the bottom of a drawer? That's super-permanent and would really mark it nicely. Or make a brand.

Can I give you a tip? We have a dresser that has been passed down the generations. We got name plates engraved with the babies name and birthday and lined them up in order of use on the inside of one door. My daughters are numbers 6 and 7! 3 generations and hopefully my girls can use it one day and continue the tradition! Might be nice if you could do something like that too?
