jade cuttings getting moldy in gritty mix
Comments (58)Hi, guys. Shannon left a link to this thread, so I came & read through it. This is a picture of the soil most often referred to as the gritty mix. You can see by the particle size that it has tremendous macro-porosity. It's made from equal parts by volume of 1/8-1/4" fir (or pine) bark, screened Turface (hi-fired clay granules), and crushed granite (grower grit - about 1/8" pieces). You can vary the water retention of this soil by keeping the bark component at 1/3 while varying the % of Turface and granite. E.g.. a mix of 3 bark 4 Turface 2 granite would hold considerably more water than 3 bark 4 granite 2 Turface You can also simply add more Turface or granite which has the effect of reducing the organic component. I've started hundreds of different cuttings, many succulents, in this soil, and never had damping off issues, so I would bet that Kashu's issues are other cultural or inherent in the plant. I suggested a sulfur dusting of the cut end and sticking the plant in dry soil for at least a week w/o water, after at least 2 weeks callusing time. Take care - just wanted to say hey. Comments (26)sail-away- No i dont work there, me and my husband are building a new house and We had just found Dorado, its brand new here and we (i) had such a time trying to pick out countertops. and it just seemed to me that no one around here, anywhere in Tx really except for Dallas had used or heard of SS but i am sick to death of granite. so i found something new, came accross this site and i cant believe how many threads there are rg SS. I just wanted to make sure i wasnt nuts for chooseing it and seems like alot of other ppl love it too... but no one yet has really been in TX? So i've been reading alot of what ppl on here are saying and i have a ton of pictures, DS emailed me a whole portofolio it seems and none of my pics look like all the others on here. Just trying to show off a bit ;-) We are still waiting on our stones to arrive in their next shipment in a few weeks, and no our kitchen is still being worked out so there isnt much to see at this point. Will share as soon as i can! oh and i write on so many of these dang things my answers just get shorter and shorter.. i like the reading but all the typing can get tedious... can the weather PLEASE get warmer so i can find something else to do! hahaha NO LAUGHING!! :)...See MoreReal life soapstone test - water, lemon, ketchup
Comments (22)Wait a minute, plucky, I thought it was you who was supportive of me? Anyhow ... I'm glad it makes sense. Waxing may become a lost art if it's not passed on. And it DOES make a difference if you do it right -- a few coats of wax give you a nice, durable finish that's renewable and feels and looks SO good. There's nothing as lustrous as a real wax finish. I wish I knew more about chemistry and physics. I'm sure I could have a better explanation about how the molecules are excited from the energy introduced into the lipid and make a conformational change and line up differently ... but I took Italian instead! Ha! And now I can just order nicer things in restaurants. I admire laxsupermom's scientific approach. (But a wooden spoon to the head to her husband for not asking if he could clean it up. Sorry. Even my dad would.)...See MoreNitty gritty questions about planning cabinet and drawer storage
Comments (26)eagledzines: I haven't quite gotten to the step of weighing my items yet. Almost there! Thanks for the tips on spacing the toe kicks and DW. About the sink cabinet: I suspected 36" would be quite tight as that's the minimum suggested size from the manufacturer. The sink itself is 35" and a bit so I did worry it made for a very tight fit and difficult installation. I'll rejig it and give it more room. nightowl: I will add that to my notes! That makes a lot of sense - it must be a pain to pull things out of drawers with high sides and backs. romy718: Ahh... right, the drawer weighs quite a bit too! Glad you mentioned that. I would NOT have thought to add that on. And, yes, of course, the dividers will add some weight too. Thanks for sharing that thread - I will consult it this weekend as I begin measuring my drawers. beachem: Thanks again for giving me detailed, specific info. It really helps me to understand how things fit together and the different options I have. Adding your info to my notes too... lots and lots to think about this weekend!...See Morelaxsupermom
