Another Celtic quilt pic

I call this one Victorian Garden. It was made for my daughter. It was my first attempt at the celtic technique--same acorn pattern. I was experimenting with using a dark thread for the background quilting and white for the other details, but that doesn't show in the picture. I also experimented with freeform quilting design as I was aÂ little bored with the straight lines.

Thank you all for your gracious comments and compliments. It means a lot coming from such talented and experienced quilters. I know because I've been seeing pictures of your work and your blocks in birthday exchanges and lottos. Now to answer some of your questions: Both are machine appliqued. I'm not too good at hand work, I'm afraid. The method is from a book by Beth Ann Williams called Celtic Quilts: A new look for Ancient Designs. The green one is from a pattern in her book. Her method is very simple. Make bias strips from fabric and make bias tubes using plastic bias bars. Use fusible strips (steam-a-seam) to press them in place. Sew them down with invisible thread. I didn't like the "look" of invisible thread, so I used matching colored thread. The most painful part was tracing and transferring the design to the background fabric. The red one is a traditional Indian design that my mom told me about. I just drew it freehand. Thanks for the compliments on fabric choices for the green. I have never done a mystery quilt because I like to know the results as well but this one turned out great. Interesting pattern and the fabric choices are perfect. Would like to know more about the rounded corners they look like fun way to go. Very nice. TFS

Thanks. I'm including a closeup of one of the vine details. It really is out of scale for the celtic applique and doesn't show up as quilted in white. It probably would have been okay if I had embroidered it with a silk stitch. I could still do that, but I don't think I will. Also, you will notice that the color of the photo is not true. There is a lot more gray in them.

Very pretty! I know nothing of the technique. Do you sort of like applique the celtic stuff onto your quilt? And I like the vine design. It shows up as quilted with white in my picture.

The essence of celtic is a design appliqued with bias binding that you make yourself. It goes over inserts of fabric or just over the quilt top fabric. You could make your own designs, but I used a pattern I found it in a book on Celtic quilting. I think I mentioned it in my other posting on Celtic style quilting. Someone suggested another book on the subject in that thread. The binding width can vary. I used it in a non-celtic design in a hanging, but I never finished it and have probably tossed it out. We moved recently and you do a lot of purging when you move.

Wow I love that and my daughter would be absolutely thrilled to get a quilt like that!! Those are her colours. You've inspired me to look into celtic quilting. Is the quilting done by hand?

I do all my quilting by hand. I really don't like sitting at a sewing machine. I used to make all my own clothes and I usually use the machine for piecing, but I like the comfortable feel of sitting back on a couch and working with a hoop. I'm glad you are giving it a try. As you can see from the two quilts, you can do a little or a lot of the celtic design. And the book I used has a variety of designs with xeroxable patterns.
