A sensitive question about....hemorrhoid banding

Okay....it can be so embarrassing to even discuss hemorrhoids. But, lots of people suffer from them.

I am having the hemorrhoid banding done on Wednesday when I get a colonoscopy done. I made the mistake of googling the banding procedure and read that it is painful to lots of people. But, suffering from the 'roids is awful so how in the world could it be any more painful? The pain from banding would only last for a while and the pain from hemorrhoids is there all the time.

So....has anyone had the banding done? Is it as awful as I just read it was?

deb, I don't know anything about them. I'm so thankful I've not had any. I do understand they are very painful.
Good luck in your banding procedure, and I hope it is successful and you have limited pain.

I'm in West Tennessee zone 7, and as y'all know, the heat wave is on . . Well, this is my first experience with bands, and what I did is pretty close to what jerijen said to do. Here's the story: I moved 12 tea roses to another location in my yard at the beginning of July (eeek!), after researching how to do it safely, and now they are full of leaves and flowering out. That's a story for transplanting established roses in the middle of the summer forum. Then, my friend and neighbor, who is a plant rookie, bought us both an Eden climbing rose. She said she had lived there ove 20 years, and SHE WANTED HER YARD TO LOOK NICE. She then said we needed to go in together on a rose order of English roses. HAH! She said ten roses each. I ended up getting 24 roses in all, and I'm now the official baby rose nurse until they get planted when the weather cools off. I didn't know that it was going to get over 104 degrees during the time when they were supposed to arrive. NOT TO WORRY. My husband, the ever present plant genius, told me how to keep them from frying. I took them into my bathroom, unwrapped them, and watered them with cool water from the shower. Then I potted them up to 1 gallon pots (they were only band sized rooted cuttings), watering the soil before putting it around their sensitive roots. THEN, I prepared a bed in partial shade in the back of some evergreen bushes on the shady cool side of my house, by using 4x4 timbers stacked two high, and filled that with damp peat moss. (All this in 104 degree weather) Then I BURIED the pots up to their rims in the peat moss bed. Every day I misted them 5 times a day. Every one is living and only had maybe one yellow leaf, and one is even putting out flowers (actually one flower, but it IS a beautiful one) The main thing with pots is that the roots get overheated, and the damp peat moss takes care of that. You could bury the pots directly in the dirt, but in 104 degree weather you might heat stroke out yourself digging all those holes!!! The peat moss is pretty expensive, but you can use it elsewhere when you don't need it any more. The second batch of roses (six bands) came yesterday in the mail, and it was so hot I was afraid to even put them in the peat moss bed. So, again my genius husband told me to just set them on the porch, and bring them inside the house when it got hot. And when the weather cooled down to the 90's, THEN put them in the peat moss bed. (He really is a genius. He's the one that designed all the flower beds in our yard) What I'm wondering is . . . at the end of the summer do they go into the ground for the winter (some are 6-8" tall, and some are 10" to 1 foot tall) or what? I think I've lost my mind ordering roses during a heat wave, but we wanted roses, and didn't want to wait till next year. (grin) jjarcher

Lou....... In my experience, there are so many different variables that can impact how roses planted at the same time and the same way that it's almost impossible to expect all roses to take off equally well. Potting up your new bands and keeping them shaded will help them with the stress incurred in changing from a greenhouse environment, shipping environment, transplanting to the larger container and adjusting to your climate. I've never bothered to remove the perlite from the roots of my bands as I prefer not to disturb the roots at all. The percentage of perlite to potting soil seems insignificant to me. Of course, I may be gardening in a more arid climate than SAS. Our experience varies ... lol. SAS ... no one gets paid to share their experiences on the GW forums, so I don't know where that one came from in your post. I haven't a clue as to why you are shouting about it, either. I do think there are too many variables to think there is only one way to help home gardeners. I haven't found perlite to be a problem with bands in my climate. Smiles, Lyn

lol...I vote for the kitty, if you can get it to cooperate. Seriously, if the temps do fall that low, I would definitely cover. It doesn't matter so much what you use, but whatever it is can NOT touch the rose at any point. It will freeze anywhere it touches the cover. And the larger an area you can cover with one cover will create a larger dead airspace, therefore more insulation. If you have single roses spaced far apart, cardboard boxes (with a some weight placed on top) work really well. If you have a LOT of far-spaced baby roses, then use blankets, sheets, whatever. Remember, don't let the cover touch the rose. I use short stakes, just taller than the rose, in a triangle or square, then place the cover over the stakes. If it's windy (like it usually is here when the temps change that drastically), you'll have to weight the corners of any fabric cover. You CAN use plastic, the important thing is dead air space. But it's even more important to not let the roses touch plastic. The year we got the Easter Freeze (low of 14F and under 25F for 48 hours!) I used blankets under plastic over a huge perennial bed. But WOW at the work involved. I wouldn't be able to do it now.

Hi! Thank you for the questions! I'm so excited with the plants because a lot of things happened to them in the last few weeks. They grow now faster and I enjoy watching their growing from day to day. I took your advice and I water them more frequently, they get once a week or at least once in two weeks. The Banded Nelsonii rhizome is stronger than ever, and it looks so healthy and strong too. If I try to move the plant a bit, it stands very strongly and it's very stable. I think something is growing in the soil, I really hope it's a new rhizome. The leaves seem to be heathy too, only one of them got rotten, I think I pot that one upside down. They're next to an orchid in orchid soil, because when I cut the leaves I didn't have so much space suddenly -and neither good soil, and I've already raised a lot of Hahnii there in that soil from leaf cutting so I'm very hopeful with the Banded Nelsonii leaves too. Some of my plants has new pups too, what I'm really proud of now is my Parva and the Caespitosa, they have very big pups right now, I can't wait so see them growing up. My Robusta has an extremely big pup too, and it's a surprise for me because that was one of my weakest plant, and I wasn't so sure if it dies or not. The other Sanses have new leaves too, so I'm completely happy now :) I attach some picture about the plants.

So far I haven't had that problem. If they are too painful can they be removed easily?

And like most things, "painful" can mean different things to different people.

I've never had the banding done, so I can't offer any personal experience. I do know a guy who had it done, and he said it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be and it was great to have the problem taken care of. Having it coincide with your colonoscopy sounds like a great idea! Yaaay drugs!

I had a 'roid banded during my colonoscopy last fall, and, just as my doctor promised, didn't feel a thing. The bands don't have to be removed - they dissolve by themselves when their "work" is done.

DH had a hemorrhoid banded many years ago, independent of a colonoscopy, and then immediately had to leave on a temporary job for the military, a thousand miles away. For some reason he wasn't able to stay in direct touch with his doc, so all messages back and forth were relayed through me. He was immediately more comfortable, within a couple of days completely comfortable, and eventually the band disappeared.

I know someone who had that done. It was painful for them at first but it was completely successful with getting rid of the "roid." Can't they deaden it somehow? I think they would say it was worth it for sure.

Deb - Do let us know what happened. Oh, and BTW - I never check online about a medical issue that I might have, not if I've seen a doctor. If something serious were to linger, then I'd do it, but otherwise, not. I did search just now about banded 'roids, and oh, ick. What is available online can be very scary.

I drove myself crazy googling about DGS's reflux last year, went into a total tizzy. Now DGS is 18 months old and is eating up a storm and drinking well also, and his reflux has become extremely mild. So all of that time and emotion on my part was for naught.

I am an expert on hemorrhoids. I suffered for many years. They were so painful I rarely went out. I decided to finally have surgery. The pain afterwards was unbearable. I didn't have a bowel movement for a week. Then during the recovery the hemmroids came back. I went to the Doctor in tears and he told me that yes they can come back. He said I needed more surgery.
He asked me if I ever ate nuts, seeds or popcorn. I told him yes but I doubted that was the cause. (I was eating popcorn almost every night). I stopped eating it and I've not had a hemorrhoid since. It was that simple. I also added a lot more fiber to my diet; fruit, vegetables and water.
Stop eating all nuts, seeds and popcorn and see how you feel.
You can still get the banding but they can return.

Okay, I know this is going to sound too good to be true, but I swear on my daughter's life it is true. My husband suffered something fierce from hemorroids for years, had all sorts of procedures done, including surgery. Nothing helped, they kept coming back and he was totally miserable. Then at a ladies meeting, we got to talking about medical conditions and I mentioned his predicament. Well one lady came over and said to try Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Apply it a couple times a day on the hemorroids to obtain relief. I am here to tell you it worked !! Within a week, he had nearly complete relief. And within a month, it was as if he never had them at all. My DIL mother had them really bad too and now is using the EVOO as well with wonderful results.

Try it, it's inexpensive and might save y'all a lot of pain and grief.
