QOD 4/16/10: Make a Quilt Day is Sunday - what are you doing?

So, this Sunday, April 18, 2010 is MAKE A QUILT DAY. What will you be doing?

Here is a link to the fabshophop page that mentions a spring quilt we can all work on.

There are 12 patterns available by doing the shop hop, and anyone who found at least one will be e-mailed the 13th pattern, a lovely butterfly. There is also an opportunity to make a quilt or a quilt top from these patterns and enter them into a contest to win a prize.

So, does anyone have any plans for this??? (I mean, besides me, of course!)

I think I'm going to finish my twin quilt tops this weekend - yeah! Then I only have 3 more patterns to go. I better not take on any more, or get sidetracked on another wonderful project, (They're all wonderful, aren't they?) Have fun with your shop-hop! I've never done one.

We are traveling 2 /12 hours south to see our granddaughter's play -- no quilting for me this Sunday.

Hey! Have a great weekend, everyone! Friday: Went to a garden party at the local nursery. Dress up affair with wine, appetizers and desserts while strolling along, looking at the new spring plants. They had a cool smooth jazz band. I met up with a gal pal there and it was fun! Saturday: Having a luau bday party for my 9 yr old. Starts at noon with hot dogs, SUN chips, and Capri SUN drinks, along with bday cake and Hawaiia music! Then we're playing Aloha sack races, pin the coconut on the tree, the wrapping paper game, limbo. After that, I have a video of "How to do the Hula". We're having everyone dress Hawaiian and greeting them at the door with leis and then taking their picture. While the party is going, my DD is going to print the pics and put them in little Hawaiian shirt frames and place them in the goodie bags, slong with Aloha mints, bracelets, and blow up beach balls. I have little Hula bears and other fun stuff for prizes. It'll be a fun day! At 3 o'clock, I'm going to veg out and crash!!!!! Sunday: Picking up my kids' cousin for the week (spring break) and we're heading for the Oregoin coast for a week. Life's a beach! After picking her up, we're going to visit my friend with the twins. The teens will watch the twins while I and my girlfriend clean house and help her get ready for a garage sale she's having next weekend. Sunday night, one of DH's friends rented a place and is giving a slide show. He's a photographer who travels the world and his shots are really awesome. It should be a GREAT show! Monday, first thing in the morning, I'm off to the coast! DH is putting together a new laptop for me, so I'm going to try to check in a couple times by wireless connection while I'm gone. Make this weekend a good one! PS: I forgot to mention, LAUNDRY!!!!! In between everything, there's the ever-present laundry. Raeanne???? Are we still doing laundry together on weekends? Good afternoon! It's 91 F. and sunny here in SE Texas. Where did our "Spring" go??? Everybody has been so busy this week! I'm impressed with those of you who have stayed on your eating plan, worked out regularly, and are feeling positive about things. That's the kind of incentive and motivation I like! I attended our community center's Mother's Day luncheon today. We had a style show first, clothes from Palais Royal, then a lovely high tea/luncheon. Very much "lady foods", but it was all scrumptious! Today I sat with a table of people I've met briefly during this past year, so I had a chance to get to know them much better today. I was the "baby" at the table at 61, and the oldest one was 93. Most of the other 6 women were in their high 70's and 80's. These women are very active in the community and never seem to slow down. They are such an inspiration to me. Tonight I'm going to spend the evening with our friend Susanne helping her get things ready for our ESA state convention next week. I had promised her when Larry was so sick that I would go with her to this if he wasn't up to it, and I will. I'll be staying at night with my son and DDIL while in Dallas, and that will be the only time I'll get to see them while there, but it's better than nothing! Dee, I hope they don't dump too much extra work onto you. Time for another cruise, isn't it? LOL I'm going to see my granddaughters and son and DDIL tomorrow after cohosting a youth banjo concert at our church. Pray for me in the morning because I have to bake 5 dozen chocolate chip cookies!!!!! The doorbell just rang, and it was FedEx with a gift from oldest Dson and DDIL - 3 living, blooming African violets and a wooden collector's box. My DDIL really knows me well and Dson always trusts her taste. If I don't get a chance to post tomorrow or Sunday, I wish everyone here a Happy Mother's Day, whether you're a bio-mom, stepmom, or furbaby mom!

I was still in Ireland without my machine or any hand work but I did find the largest quilt shop in Ireland!!! It was so great to take a little getaway for myself and just meander among the fabrics. The owner, Maeve was just divine and we chatted away for a few hours as I floated around the shop. Most of the fabric was American so much of it I have or had seen already. What was fabulous was finding a few older American fabrics that are sold out everywhere on the internet but I was able to find among the hidden treasures of her shelves!!! I did pay dearly since the dollar isn't so great and they are imported fabrics over there. Some of them were $18-19 a yard!!! It was worth it for the unobtainable ones!!! I did find some domestic fabric in pink and purples (purples are my favs) that was very loud on the bolt but looked pretty in the pinwheel quilt she had hanging up so I took home a kit!! After 2 cups of tea, and wonderful conversation I left with my treasures, along with a great little reusable tote with her logo and shop info on it. I only wish I would have taken my camera with me. I will take pics of my goodies when I get home from work today, I was too exhausted last night after unpacking and starting laundry!!

What interesting responses! I want the fork pins!! I saw them when I ordered the small patchwork pins, but they were shown used instead of the safety pins. I have a Pfaff with an attached small walking foot & I have sewn forever with one, so I take the even feed for granted-plaids match perfectly& easily if you cut your pattern is correctly. I never thought to hand baste a difficult intersection. On this stack-n-whack, I followed Bethany Reynolds' directions explicitly on when to press seams open & when to press to one side, as well as when to cut off the bunny ears. She states this all helps to match & nest the intersections & points, which are every 5" in all directions. She was right. Next to sewing, pressing is so rewarding to me. That's when you realize how good (or bad) your sewing is :) I think nicely pressed seams are essential for accuracy. I remember "pounding seams" in materials that you can't press because they were too thick or would melt -wools, leather, furs, upholstery,etc.

I won't be quilting on Sunday, but a new client brought three tops today, so I'll be custom quilting up a storm today and tomorrow. I'm hoping that Sunday after church I can convince my husband to road trip to the mainland to hit Michael's for some more yarn for a shawl I'm knitting.

Odessa, I've printed off all the FabShop Hop blocks, but they will go into my growing pile of patterns I'll probably never make!

DH is working tomorrow, so Sunday will be our day to do stuff together, if we do anything. I'm planning to sew tomorrow, but not sure if I will work on a quilt or sew a new outfit. I haven't made any clothes in ages.

Sunday I will probably be working on my Patchwork Pines Birthday blocks to keep myself ahead of the game. I really like doing just one block per birthday. I get to play with colors and patterns that I might not choose for me own projects.

I'm going to check out Hobby Lobby for fabric; I planned to make a smock for my hair stylist but found I didn't get enough fabric......grrrrrrrr.....don't you just hate that?

Annie - I know you'd said on another thread that you're more into knitting right now so this is an OT knitting question - do you knit socks? and is it possible to make knit socks that stay up and don't slide down?

Whew, I got my two tops together so now just have to finish them. I did it again - the one that I was so excited about with the 2 fabrics did not turn out well - the 2 are too similar in tone, and the one that I thought I really messed up with on the 2nd color choice ended up looking better because there is more of a contrast. Sigh, one of these days I'll get better with my color combos. I'm always so surprised how patterns turn out in reality from what I thought they would be in my head! Learning!
