I use AVG free and it works fine. DH(who is my techie) likes it.

I have used the basic free edition of AVG for years and am satisfied. I just download it from the website.

I have used it in the past currently I prefer AVAST free both are free and work.
However you will need to use a removal tool or program to remove what ever AV program you have on the computer now. If not you will have conflicts.

use that to remove the old program before installing the new one.

I use the free edition, too. Seems to work fine. I have also used Avast. I like both.

Why is AVG constantly bugging me to BUY? I keep deleting the messages, but it's becoming a terrible nag.

That's what I'd like to know. I have purchased AVG's security, in my ignorance, thinking I would be better off purchasing something instead of free. You know the adage!
So it's not the necessary thing to do?

I've used AVG free for years problem-free. (DH uses Norton which he pays for and has chronic problems with viruses.) I also use Malwarebytes to scan for malware.

AVG rarely bugs me to buy.

Raven, couldn't the previous AV protection just be uninstalled rather than use Free Ap Remover?

Be careful when downloading software. Some of the pages are a minefield of "download" buttons and you have to watch carefully to click the right one. Also watch the check-mark boxes because they want to give you extras stuff you don't want. Right, Raven?

I've used Norton for years and I think it's excellent, far better than free products I tried before. It's very unimposing (you'd never know it's running) and very effective.

If Mr Socks has recurring virus problems, it's either coming from email attachments (which Norton will scan before opening) or he's being careless about sites he visits or links he clicks on. Recurring virus issues should NEVER be experienced.

For sure always watch each step of the download and the install for the checked items you do NOT want like extra toolbars or other stuff.

In most cases the AV programs insert themselves so deeply into the system that just using the Control panel removal does not do a complete job and leaves a lot of stuff cluttering up your pc which can in some cases cause issues and conflicts so using either a dedicated removal tool from the AV company or a full app remover program will do a much more thorough job of a good clean removal. That is why I always recommend doing it that way.

Most of the AV companies do provided a dedicated removal tool for their products and that is also an acceptable method.

Using those or app remover is fine.
And also be sure as you go through the selection process you stick with the free version and not a trial version which will then want you to pay for it after the trial.

Another good place to get the downloads from that will make sure that nothing extra is checked, you only get the item you want is at ninite site.

you will need to install their installer and select what ever programs you want from the list and it will do all the rest for you.

They also now offer an updater program, I have no experience with it or how well it works, but the installer for the apps has been recommended for several years now with good success.
