AVG for me when doing a scan automatically puts them in the virus vault I think, of course I could be missing something because it's set to scan at 11:00 pm and I'm usually not around to see, but I do find things in the virus vault that I wasn't aware of. Now if I went to open or install something with a virus, I'll get a popup asking what to do with it.

Morz if you also have Windows XP you should consider installing Skype on both computers. Then get Mum a set of headphones so you can talk and walk her through the procedure - or any other problem while both of you are in front of your computers. Then you can keep up by showing the same page on your own computer. I use this quite often when helping folks. Having said that back to the issue. Have Mum install Crap Cleaner, linked below. Before using it go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the AVG install. Now run Crap Cleaner with the default settings to get those corrupt files off the machine and then do your install. If you or Mum are concerned about Crap Cleaner (it is a brilliant little freebie actually) you can create a Restore Point before moving forward so you can go back if necessary. If history repeats itself it will begin selectively auto-upgrading in the next few days. Not all updating users will get the upgrade on-demand at the same time. Grisoft usually spreads it over a period so don't be concerned if you are not getting the upgrade with your normal updating. It might be over a couple weeks at a minmum. I for one do not see a major need to rush the upgrading at this time. I would recommend be patient. If you are familiar with FileHippo, you will see on RC's link that there isn't a Change Log tab so users don't even know what the changes are yet. They are more than likely minor fixes as the numeric change is still in the suffix. DA

I'm glad to see this thread re-upped. I'm reposting my original problem, hoping for a solution: I tried to update to v9 and got the message that said my Update Manager was disabled. Next message said to go to Tools/ Manager; there I'm given two choices. 1. Delete temporary update files 2. Revert virus data base to previous version. No 1 is Are you sure you want to delete temp files?, and No 2 is Warning. Some of the newest threats may not be detected. I've never run into this before when updating. HP WINXP SP2 TIA Sue
